nausea in the office

sophus · 15/01/2007 13:11

is anyone else having problems coping with the office and being sick? I have terrible nausea all day and throughout the night. My worst time of day is around midday which makes work hard. I am trying to work from home as much as possible but I am not enjoying letting my staff down. But i am finding it all a bit much to cope with if i'm honest. I want to be able to cope, but the thought of being stuck in a meeting when a big fat wave of sickness hits me is enough to induce mind-numbing anxiety.

Oh no, I had the same and had to take time of sick (which I ended up being sacked for ) but try drinking ginger ale/beer and snacking on crackers throughout the day, keeping windows open and wrap up if cold, but keep them open. {{hugs}} It's horrible, isn't it? xXx

NbgsYellowFeathers · 15/01/2007 13:15

Agree with Q. Keep windows open for fresh air or make sure your near a door so you can dash out for fresh air if it hits you. Also a bottle of water to keep sipping on.
Do they know you are pregnant?

lulumama · 15/01/2007 13:16

ginger ale, ginger biscuits, seabands, sipping water, dry crackers,

keep crakcers etc in your desk drawer and make sure that you use oyur lunch hour to eat and get a breath of air.....

i was sick in the bin once or twice at work, when pregnant with DS....

flatmouse · 15/01/2007 13:19

Ginger ale definitely - but i was sick rather than feeling sick (which personally i think is easier to deal with) - and i just used to run off every so often!

flatmouse · 15/01/2007 13:20

to clarify - i think the "being sick" is easier

sophus · 15/01/2007 13:20

I haven't told my MD, just the person i share an office with as it was starting to look odd. i guess i am lucky in that i can work at home a lot, but i don't know whether to just bite the bullet and tell the boss and say i want to work from home for next few months.

sophus · 15/01/2007 13:22

yeah being sick would be easier - at least some point to feeling so ill - if that makes sense! am doing the ginger/crackers etc etc thing. sea-bands make no difference. trying reflexology on weds. you name it i'll give it a go....

lulumama · 15/01/2007 13:23

if you think your boss would be agreeable, why not?

MrsBadger · 15/01/2007 13:25

oh it's miserable, isn't it?

I work in a lab so can't even keep food in my desk drawer or sip water at my desk - I've had to say that I'm suffering from low blood sugar and need to eat regularly so am getting away with nipping to the tearoom for a single rich tea finger every 30min.

Can you suck sweets or something similarly subtle when in meetings etc? Those lemon flavoured AquaDrops are pretty good, or whatever gets you through.

Luckily I'm not actually vomiting, just nauseous, so I'm spared worrying about finding buckets, lungung to the loo etc, which I suppose is a silver lining...

3rdTriMossTer · 15/01/2007 13:27

I had to take so much time off sick at the beginning of my pgcy. And our company only pays for ten days sickness; after that you get SSP. I managed to get through with just ten and a half days but it was horrible. So if your boss will let you work from home, then go for it, deffo.

incy · 15/01/2007 14:01

I would tell your MD but explain as it is early days you would rather your pregnancy is not general knowlege.

Your work are likely to be more sympathetic and helpful if they know what is going on.

I was advised by my union not to tell my boss that I was pregnant ( I work in a very un child friendly environment).

Eventually I had to as I felt so awful and and tbh it was all a bit easier because my boss covered for me and was less judgemental when I kept disappearing to be sick.

Would second other advice re sugary drinks and boiled sweets - both seemed to work for me.

I have only just told the rest of my colleages I am pregnant again (I am 22 weeks) and they hadn't guessed, so what may seem very obvious to you does not always stand out to other people.

murcimari · 15/01/2007 14:33

I'd tell my MD at once and try to come to an arrangement that works for everyone concerned, but mainly works for me! There is no point in suffering and feeling guilty at the same time for not being able to function properly.
With re to the nausea, wine gums work a treat for me.

sophus · 15/01/2007 15:29

thanks all. think i will muddle through to end of next week when i have a scan (will be 8 1/2 weeks by then), then once i know it actually exists will feel more comfortable about telling boss. it is a v child friendly company but i am very senior and you are slightly expected to be superhuman by the time you get to my level! oh well will soon disavow them of that!

Oh it is rotten isnt it? Like Quootiepie I had time of and ended up being pushed.

Speak to someone about it and at least then they will see you are trying to work something out for all concerned.

madmarchhare · 16/01/2007 12:03

off

beckybrastraps · 16/01/2007 12:15

I dissected a (not altogether fresh)sheep's pluck when 9 weeks pregnant so I do sympathise.

I found sniffing a cut lemon very helpful (although it's not altogether easy to do it when you have a class of 30 childrenin front of you). I only had to run out of the lab once though. ANd then my cover was blown...

foxymagoo · 16/01/2007 16:08

I used to make myself sick every mornng - once I saw my stomach lining I felt so much better!

I got big prmortion 1 month before I fell pg so was determined not to have any time off ill (which I managed) but did have to go to lots of challenging meetings feeling like sh*t. Used to crawl home and go to bed.

My morning sickness eased after @ 13 weeks but the 6-12 weeks is so hard as no-one knows your pg and you just feel ghastly.

I also bought book 'Managing morning sickness' which was great re: what food to eat and avoid. For 2 weeks all I could eat was chips from McDonalds with lots of salt - oh my arteries. Ended up having a boy and they do say if you crave salt your having a boy...

poppiesinaline · 16/01/2007 16:52

thats interesting foxy - never heard that - Ive craved salt and vinegar crisps like mad with DS !

I used to work with a girl who used to yell "man my phone" and then promptly hung her head out of the window to throw up

vicdivechic · 16/01/2007 16:54

had to throw up on the way into work as I showed my security pass at the guard house, I'm sure he thought I was hungover - not ideal when your going to control aeroplanes!
On the bright side I was only mildly sick for a few weeks and ginger ale and dry toast really helped

MrsBadger · 16/01/2007 16:54

ooh, interesting foxy - I've been craving things that are buttered - toast, crackers, bagels, crumpets, you name it - maybe it's the salt I'm after. Will lay in some hula hoops for the drive home in case...

incy · 16/01/2007 17:10

Craved crisps all through my last pregnancy (a boy) and through this one (also a boy) so perhaps there is truth in this !

I am happy that I can legitimately eat lots of crisps now...

3littlefrogs · 16/01/2007 20:49

Sipping fizzy water all the time helped. (Burping constantly - embarrassing but seemed to relieve the nausea a bit). Mine got worse as the day progressed, so I negotiated starting at 8.00 and leaving work at 3 pm while I could still travel home without having to throw up into the plastic bags I had to carry everywhere. If I could get into bed by 7pm I could get some sleep - otherwise, tended to be throwing up till the early hours. My boss was very understanding and explained to senior management that it was better I was there at all than having to get an agency person in. Rest and sleep is the best thing to alleviate the sickness - not easy when you have to work. Trying to do housework makes it much worse.

Lwatkins · 17/01/2007 00:27

Oh lord i remember this so well, only im at uni so instead of running out of meetings i was running out of lectures for 3 months! Picture this: lecture hall full of students, lecturer talking away to the class and little old me bolting towards the door every single day! I had 'food poisoning' and a 'stomach bug' for so long, i think they all started to assume i was an alcholic or on drugs or something that was making me so ill!!!!
Finally explained to my course leader that i was pg and she nearly pi**ed herself laughing, cause it suddenly clicked in her head why i had been running for dear life out of my lectures for 3 months!

I just had to run to the loo to be sick the smile is because in my last 2 pg (ended in mc ) i havent been sick. I work in an office, with my mother so i better tell her soon or shes gonna suss it! I havent told her because i dont want her to worry after the last times. The toilet is quite far from my desk too!
