What do your children call their grandparents?

My parents are currently engaged in a good natured argument about what their "grandparent" names will be- seeing as this is their first time.

Just out of interest (read; nosiness) what are your parents' grandparent names? I'd love to hear any unusual ones :)

DH and I are Nana and Gaga .

The other side were known as "The Elbows" we don't know why but are now Granmo and Elbow.

Great granny is Zizi - attempt at GG for great granny .

We also have a family friend who is known as 'Arry ( nothing like his real name ) and the children's uncle is Hamoo ( again not a clue why ! )

Strange creatures children !

I love the child calling granny "Dear " Mooey89

Grandma and Pa
Mimi
Poppy and Nonna (step-grandmother)

DM chose her own. The others are not all to my taste but were already in place from the first grandchildren

But for a while, thanks to toddler pronunciation it was "Gammy and Gandalf". DH tried soooo hard to get those to stick Grin

DPs are Grandma and Grandpa (or at least that's the plan, DD is first GC so I guess it depends what sticks for her).

DPILs are Grumpy Grammy and Baldy Grin (they were meant to be Grandma and Grandad but DH fancies himself as a comedian and spent a lot of time coaching DSIL's kids...and now it's stuck so DD will be using the same).

I don't get Nanny for a grandma, I don't know anyone in RL who uses that, to me you might hire a nanny so it jars slightly....

Granny & Grancha for my parents, DF from South Wales. My late MIL & FIL were Grandma and Grandad.

I had Nana & Grandad on my Mum's side and Nanny on my Dad's. I presume I would have had a Grancha had he lived longer.

My Grandad died in his sixties and my Nanny was born at the end of the 19th century, so long gone now. Nana still going strong and a Great Nan(a) now seven times over.

Both sets of grandparents are just Grandma and Grandad, but referred t as Grandma and Grandad (MySurname) and Grandma and Grandad (Ex'sSurname).

That's what I called my grandparents and the same with my ex's we just stuck with that. ExFIL appears to have taken to signing cards from 'Grandfather Surname' recently though, not sure why, maybe he thinks it sounds grander? We're sticking with Grandad here though!

complicated family set-up here.

1 Grandad (first name)
1 Grandad
1 Granda (family is Irish)
1 Grandpa

1 Granny
My mum was alive until DD was 8 weeks old, so was briefly Nana.

Everyone chose what they wanted to be called.

DS is 22 months. My parents are nana and bampa, DH's parents are nana and bampa pond (unsurprisingly because they have a pond in their garden!). DS decided on the names himself - I think DH's parents would like him to call them nanny and Grampy.

Granny and Grandad both sets but the kids use their first names to differentiate between them.

Nan and Grumps on my side.
Nanna "Name" and Grandad "Name" on DHs side (this is how he referred to his when he was a lad).

Ive decided I will be Granny. If its good enough for Her Maj, and all.

I know someone who refers to hers as Mops and Pops.

My Mum is Nanny and my Godfather/substitute Dad is DanDan . DD couldn't say Grandad and it took ages for her to come up with her own version. She's 2 and can say Grandad (because of Peppa Pig!) but she likes DanDan better.

PIL are Nana and DanDan...Beard Blush He does have a beard, to be fair to DD, and when she was really small we used to differentiate between the Grandads by saying one has a beard and the other a moustache! Not sure if FIL appreciates it but we think it's hilarious!

Nana and Pop or Bop depending on which GC is talking to him, mine had trouble with the P sound.

And MIL is known by her first name, she wanted to be Granny but DD1 had trouble with Gr sounds till she was 3+. FIL is Nandad as a result.

I always remember the woman's hour item from about 25 years ago where apparently what you call your grandmother is a clear identifier of social class.. It always makes me smile.

Nanny/Nan - working class (to everyone not working class, nanny is the lady who looked after you while your mother was busy or disinclined !)

Grandma - Resiliantly middle class

Granny/Grand-Ma- mar. Upper class - aristocracy.

It didn't quite ring true for me as one gm was very well to do and my parent was bought up in a house where her mother didn't work but but she was bought up by a nanny, whilst the other gm was definitely working class . Both called Nan. Whereas my mum is Grandma. Her choice.
