Hi, does anyone know what happens if protein is found in your urine when pregnant but your bp is up and down. Feet are swollen too. I have a check up today and am not looking forward to the prospect of been sent home again and worrying about whether my bp is up.TIA. x

I had this late in pg - they made me collect my pee (all of it!) for a day which they then analysed......I think they are mainly concerned about preclampsia (sp?) which the protein can be a sign of. SOmeone like Mears would probably know more...

shiningstar · 06/01/2007 08:12

reply these are the very common signs of preeclampsia. they will just keep monitoring you as normal but if you start to see lights dancing infront of your eyes you need to go to doctors asap. i was hospitalised with this at 37 weeks. carried to 41 weeks in end but it can be really sero=ious so look after yourself! to stop the swelling round the feet put them higher than your waist as much as possible!!

Harry2007 · 06/01/2007 09:05

Shiningstar - I think I need your help. I have been sofa/hospital bound with severe SPD for 4 weeks now and over the last 4/5 days, I've been feeling a bit light headed, been having palpitations and the little floating lights in front of my eyes are horrendous. MY bp has been fine all the way through my pregnancy 120/60 and my feet aren't swollen as I'm keeping them elevated as well as wearing surgical stockings. Any thoughts?

Sorry to highjack your thread Daisypops!

lulumama · 06/01/2007 09:15

protein, odoema, and raised BP are indicators of pre eclampsia

visual disturbances like harry2007 ..they need to be investigated as that can be an indicator of pre eclampsia...you need to call the labour ward and tell them your symptoms ASAP.

swelling can be a normal part of later pregnancy, but when in conjunction with raised BP and protein, it should be checked out further,

also, the raised BP has to be taken into account against what your normal pregnant BP is too!

Harry2007 · 06/01/2007 09:33

Thanks lulumama

My midwife was supposed to call yesterday so I was geared up to telling her about it, but she didn't turn up. Not sure what the protocal is for ringing the MW on a Saturday morning though.

I do have a slight problem with ringning my lanour ward as it's about 50 miles away and I'm on my own at home and can't drive myself because of SPD.

As the time goes on, I'm finding this pregnancy lark a bit trying!

Daisypops · 06/01/2007 09:39

Thanks everyone. No probs re hijacking Harry!

I went to the hospital on Thursday to be monitored. My bp went back down when I was there but protein went to +2 then back down when I was leaving to +1. They said I had a UTI I have no symptons but last night I had quick sharp pain down below that made me . My feet and fingers are swollen but are worse at night, my feet feel strange to touch and are so tight and wrinkly? BH are also very strong at night. DP is worried that my bp will go up when I'm at home and we won't know, he worried for bubs I think.

call your gp ..they should have out of hours service. should have bp and wee checked in the context of your visual disturbances....if you call labour ward, they might well ask you to go in, but you should really be checked out ASAP

daisy..sounds like LO is making his way towards the exit !

if you have any concerns re blood pressure, swelling etc..call the midwife or docs x better safe than sorry xx

Harry2007 · 06/01/2007 10:05

Will call them now Lulumama - thanks

lulumama · 06/01/2007 10:10

do let us know how you get on.......shame your midwife never came to see you yesterday.

Harry2007 · 06/01/2007 10:14

Midwife is on her way - that was quick!

lulumama · 06/01/2007 14:28

hope all is well xxx

Harry2007 · 06/01/2007 14:32

Midwife came. She said that the visual disturbances could be down to low blood pressure 100/60. Head is also 1/5 engaged which is why the SPD pain is worse. Baby's heart beat is fine but she's coming back tomorrow morning to make sure.

lulumama · 06/01/2007 14:37

good news then,..although i imagine you are feeling dreadful....poor you..x

Harry2007 · 06/01/2007 14:39

At times, if someone said they's do a CS with no anaesthetic and a butter knife, I'd gratefully agree to it!

lulumama · 06/01/2007 14:42

oh dear.....x you will feel so much better soon..when you are holding LO....take the chance to keep your feet up and get waited on until baby comes xxx

Hi

I woprked for a pre-eclampsia support group (PETS) but more importantly I had the same symptoms as you, so I hope you don't mind me sharing my story.
Its been on here enough before.

At week 34-ish my BP started to rise and my son was notecto be small (He is 7 now btw). I was ent for assessment, by which time the BP was back down, and I had to listen to the MW berate my MW for wasting her time.

I was referred to the local unit to have my BP checked and reassured it would be ok>

For the next few weeks the pattern was: go in for check, high BP, get sent to maternity unit in next town (a consyultant led one), get BP checked, get told to P off (eefectively anyway). A few times I was kept in overnight. I ahted it there.

fast forward now to week 38, I hadn't amnaged a few days out of hospital since initial BP test.

I go into MW unit. BP is high, I beg her not to send me again_ she agrees, as lionga s I come straight in or call should I be symptomatic. I go home.

At teatime, ex calls he has had a car crash and nobody to talk to. Duringt his call, DH notices my body going limp, by the end i am lying on the floor.

Shortly after I start to fit.

Dh takes me straight to the local unit, they take me in and I have a bigger fir, they call main unit and are advised to send me there by ambulance (blues and two's) but won't OK the MW's request to perp me for a c section.

get to hospital at 1 am, or thereabouts.

Consyltant takes bp, all OK, 'you'd go home but its the middle of the night, got o the ward and home as soon as it light'.

Next day on ward, not discharged, sent for a scan but nody will talk to me.

day after, go for a shower, Consultant leaves note- 'baby not growing will induce today'. So induction started, baby boy delivered next day weighing 5ln 5oz- ptrevious scans show he has lost a lb in utero, he has complications during delivery but bloods lost and Consultant wouldn't attend or consider doing a c-section (I think they were afeared of HELLP syndorme which can complicate surgery massively).

I didn't get a DX for a further three years, but knew it was Pre-eclampsia. had to moce to another area to get a DX.

FAst forward 7 years, ahev 3 kids, sone who was affected is disabled though I don't know if its related to his birth.

So yes, rising and falling BPs can be a feature of Pre-eclampsia- but its not always taken as seriously!

I wuld search for these two on the net: APEC and PETS (preclampsia and toxaemia support), the second I am involved with

Good luck

PeachyClair · 06/01/2007 14:55

(sorry for typing- have to tell story in a mater of fact way or get upset)

lulumama · 06/01/2007 14:57

i hadn;t rad your story before peachyclair....how terrifying...am glad teh outcome was positive in the end....but what a journey to get there.. was it wrong to not deliver you after you were admitted after fitting> my understanding was that if you had reached the stage of fits, you have eclampsia, and it is imperative to deliver immediately .

also, have heard of HELLP,not entirely sure what it is...?

lulumama · 06/01/2007 14:58

sorry x post, if you don;lt want to discuss it further, that is finex

PeachyClair · 06/01/2007 15:20

hellp

It doesn't mention here, but my understanding is that HELLP can affect clotting.

No i'm OK to discuss it, have before, I just have it very clinically imprinted into my brain LOL, so I don't have to get upset every time I tell anyone.

PeachyClair · 06/01/2007 15:21

And yes it was wrong not to deliver me after the fits- I think there was some debate between MW and Consultant 9who was by this time very afraid I'ds make a complaint) about whether my seizure constituted a fit

I think they were playing frnatic semantics at this stage.

Harry2007 · 06/01/2007 15:45

Sounds like a terrible experience Peachyclair - seems you were a victim of hospital politics.

lulumama · 06/01/2007 19:12

thank you very much for sharing that peachyclair x

Daisypops · 07/01/2007 18:43

Was monitored again yesterday and told I still have +2 protein in my urine, and 'borderline' blood pressure. My feet and hands are swollen and I have to go back to the hospital tomorrow to be monitored again and for bubs heart tracing. Wouldn't it make sense to induce me now rather than let this go on and on. I can hardly walk, have to drive to the hospital alone (family and DP are working) this will prob raise my bp! If I have to go back every other day until labour starts naturally I will be . I appreicate that the checks are important to me and bub and intend to continue going but I've read on a website that if yur symptoms are mild and your over 37 weeks you will be induced

OP posts:
Daisypops · 08/01/2007 12:54

Still got +2 protein in my wee and urates (sp?) test has come back slightly higher than normal which can be an indication that pre-eclapmsia is on its way, so... I'm been induced tomorrow!

Excited and nervous. When I got home from hospital me and DP just sat looking at eachother and smiling!

Induction is not ideal but they wouldn't be doing it without good reason.
