Reasonable Maternity Wear on the High Street

Am getting to the point of looking into maternity clothes. Was going to order from Old Navy till I realised they don't deliver to Uk.
I am a nurse so wear my uniform 5 days out of 7 so I need a decent pair of black maternity trousers and a few weekend bits.
Maybe I am a skinflint but I resent paying £30 for a pair of pants I'll wear for 6 months.
Was going for a mooch round town this afternoon and was wondering if there is anywhere that has reasonably priced mat clothes.

H & M if you've got one near you?

3rdTriMossTer · 02/01/2007 10:04

Mothercare isn't too bad, compared to the maternity versions of high street clothes, that is.

Have you tried ebay? Also you might want to consider joining your local freecycle network; lots of people give away maternity clothes.

itsazoohere · 02/01/2007 10:24

Primark do some loose cotton trousers-not TOO much like tracksuit bottoms for £3 or £4. Have lived in them-can afford to upgrade in size every month. Also they do lots of longer jumpers that cover bumps well (I can't afford to be snobby about where I shop!)

ShowOfHands · 02/01/2007 10:27

Next sale- bought two pairs of trousers (one pin-stripe, one cord), two tops (one linen, one shirt) and a dress for £24.

goingfor3 · 02/01/2007 10:33

vertbaudet have some nice clothes in the sale for really good prices.

scatterbrain · 02/01/2007 10:34

Pumpkin patch had some nice stuff - online too, also the Next stuff is OK.

jodee · 02/01/2007 10:40

La Redoute, catalogue/online, look pretty good.

M&S do a range now.

Do Dotty P still do maternity stuff?

NbgSparklyYellowFeathers · 02/01/2007 10:45

Check out HotUKDeals and write down all the voucher codes for places like Additions, Vertbaudet and La Redoute.
I got quite a few pieces for just postage costs, sometimes nothing at all because I used £10, £15 off codes.
Its well worth a look.

trixymalixy · 02/01/2007 12:18

larger Asdas have apparently started doing good cheap maternity wear according to my SIL. Bit late for me now as now 37+2!

I just bought one decent pair of maternity trousers for work from Top Shop(washed them halfway through the week) and loads of cheap long tops from Primark. I also got a pair of comfy jersey trousers from M&S for £18 which I could have worn for work as well.

paulaplumpbottom · 02/01/2007 12:36

I would go to formes. I know its expensive but there clothes really are amazing. They fit so much better than anything you will find in the usual high street places. Just go in and try some on and you'll see.

steffy1 · 02/01/2007 12:38

go to lxdirect.com.

they have maternity wear on sale-i saw jeans at 17.50 and tops alot cheaper than that. try sale pages. hope that helps!

marymillington · 02/01/2007 12:43

Topshop - loving their stuff just now.
especially good atm, there's a sale on.
also warehouse have a range of mat wear online - again may be good in the sale.
paulapb is also wise in saying one or two really nice, well cut things will make you feel an awful lot better about yourself , especially when you are 8 months gone and ginormous!

peachygirl · 02/01/2007 13:37

I got 3 pairs of the £18 comfy jersey trousers from M and S ( probably the same as Trixymalixy) and they have lasted really well they wash brilliantly and can be casual or dressed up.
I've got tops from JoJo they have offers where you can buy 2 and get £5 off. they have been a good fit for me and 3 tops from mothercare- all the same style.

CreenaberrySauce · 02/01/2007 13:45

Word of caution re Next - not all of their stores actually stock their maternity range. To save yourself a wasted trip, you might want to ring your local branch first. If they don't stock any maternity wear, you can always buy stuff online from their site instead, which has the full maternity range.

Good source of reasonably priced stuff is New Look. Their range isn't huge but you should be able to pick up some basics at good prices.

Quite afew websites have sale son at the moment too. Try the sites for Picchu and Crave - I was there yesterday and managed to pick up some stuff in the sale. Crave is particularly good, as all of their items have some kind of reduction or special offer applied to them at the moment.

Hope this helps - happy shopping!

snowytyphoonsmum · 02/01/2007 13:59

Just tried LX direct and their sale is brill. Never thought of the catalogue shops having a sale. Will look on the others now.

oh, and if you can get yourself to a Next to Nothing they often have oodles of maternity stuff, heavily reduced (and their extra-long jeans are)

puddleduck2001 · 02/01/2007 14:28

Dorothy Perkins does quite a lots of basics at good prices, I got lots of tops from there about £8 each, and one nice outfit for special occasions from Blooming Marvellous, I had a nice pair of jeans from topshop maternity and another from JoJo Maman Bebe...all with various discount codes out of baby magazines!

princessmel · 02/01/2007 14:31

H and M, New look and Asda are very good and not expensive.
I had some nice things from there. Also the Additions mail order catalogue. Or Additions online.

IdrisTheRedNosedDragon · 02/01/2007 14:39

Peacocks do maternity wear now I discovered recently

Myfairone · 02/01/2007 15:47

I went to the Next sale and the bargains are incredible there! They had some really nice t-shirt tops in there for £3!!!!! Shirts for £7 and trousers for £5! Well worth looking online too.

Also check Debenhams because they do a range called Red Herring Maternity and they too have a sale on right now.

bananasarny · 05/01/2007 14:47

There are loads of tops that are 'smock' style in top shop at the moment, tons of them and good shaped t-shirts, worth looking, their vest tops that are £9 for 2 are very useful - goes to size 16, the smocky ones are very comfortable - none of this is maternity range too, very handy fashion at the moment!!

Bottoms are a bit of problem I find, dont know about anyone else? M&S have a pair of stretch side straight leg dark denim jeans that are very comfortable £35 - best I've tried.

Apart from that hate looking for bottoms.

glitterkitty · 05/01/2007 15:30

I found the black trousers in mothercare (the type that go right over your bump) are the best cut if you are short and fat (as I am sob sob ). They do really nice tracky bottoms too. About £20- £25 for bottoms (& theres sale at moment).

Still havent found nice jeans- the ones I had from Dotty P looked great but slipped down at crotch annoyingly.

Lots of cheap tops about- but finding the type that are tight under the bust then flow outwards in gathers (which I LOVE) is really hard. Anyone spotted any?

The M&S & Next I went to had really poor selections- and I dragged all the way to marble arch. Huh!

bananasarny · 05/01/2007 15:35

Try top shop glitter kitty they have lots of tops like that, fitted and then flow out.

The M&S jeans would be worth a go then if you can find them, they have a metal belt on them and are dark denim, very comfy!

Its a pain being short innit, all the legs are too long and look fatter earlier!!

frizzie · 06/01/2007 19:35

mothercare has got some good basics & i found on-line shopping gives you the best selection for the fewest pennies!
Try funmum, cravematernity, blooming marvellous, topshop, dorothy perkins, jojomamanbebe or if you're feeling flush then formes or isabella oliver. Pregnancy mags do discount vouchers too.

the other option is to ask around if anyone has maternity stuff you could borrow as you said you only end up wearing it for a few months

there are also alot of long jumpers, wrap-dresses or baby-doll style tops in normal clothes shops that lend themselves nicely to maternity wear

good luck & happy shopping

bambi06 · 07/01/2007 18:58
