Scan pictures - costs

Have just had the date through for my dating scan and the letter says they will charge £5 per picture printed. Is this quite standard now? When we had printed pictures with DS 4 years ago they printed 4 pictures per scan and just asked for a donation, so found £5 per picture a bit steep!

Ours are £4 each... The 12 week scan we were a bit giddy, asked for 4 pictures and paid the full £16
When we had the 20 week scan, the sonographer went mad printing them off, we got about 8 different ones, but she wasn't bothered about the money at all... we probably paid about £15 though because we didn't want to be cheeky!
Had a growth scan at 28 and paid £5 for two, the sonographer only wanted to charge for one as one isn't very clear so we compromised on them keeping the change from a fiver.
No tokens here either. You pay the sonographer and then they bring you your change back with your notes afterwards.

I do think it's bad that things are really inconsistent across the board... I get making allowances for poorly babies or maybe really terrible quality but I think they should be strict with it to be fair. I don't resent paying extra money for what is really a luxury.

Can't believe there's so much difference across the country... Ours are free; at each scan they've just printed off four and given them to us.

CraftyMissus · 21/01/2016 20:06

Mine were £4 each, with no warning. Luckily we each had change on us that added up!

londonrach · 21/01/2016 20:27

£5 for one, £10 for two or more or in my case four. We didnt know (first baby) so had to quickly get some money.

LouLou030783 · 21/01/2016 20:40

I'm still flabbergasted u need to pay

Chattymummyhere · 21/01/2016 20:44

£4 each here but a big sign saying not to purchase until after your scan, they give the pictures when they come back out with your notes I've never been asked to show my receipt but I always pay.

LittleGreyCatwithapinkcollar · 21/01/2016 23:22

£5 here but no option to purchase more than one. You pay at reception when you get your notes back.

UptownFunk00 · 21/01/2016 23:47

Ours ask for a donation so put £1 per pic (they gave us 2 one time and 4 the other).

Bizarre how it ranges.

TattieHowkerz · 22/01/2016 00:01

Free at our hospital.

SophieC13 · 22/01/2016 07:13

Mine are £4 each, I think it's come thing they have bought in for the cost of "Printing" Smile

CarShare · 22/01/2016 08:54

Free at Lewisham hospital and amazing care all round there too.

mrsjskelton · 22/01/2016 09:05

I think that's just the official stance - at our 20w scan, the sonographer printed about 10 images and we still paid only £5 - she said we have a very photogenic foetus Grin

MrsZumbaDancer · 22/01/2016 13:30

its £4 per picture here, and you select which one you want and how many copies.. then you go to machine and get tokens, take it back to desk to collect your notes and get given the pic..

Had an early scan wit DS1 and as was the assessment unit was given that one for free

harboromummy · 22/01/2016 16:41

I paid £40 for 4 scan photos at my 12 week scan..

LouLou030783 · 22/01/2016 17:08

Omg 40quid that seems totally ridiculous

Jenjen86 · 22/01/2016 17:13

Hmm reading these comments is a little frustrating,I have absolutely no objection to paying at all and think it's great you are given the option to buy them as a keepsake but there really ought to be consistency across the country!

harboromummy · 22/01/2016 17:30

Yep, £10 each. And on the letter it says they only accept chip and pin lol

AveEldon · 22/01/2016 18:08

£3 per picture & £7 for a DVD here

Crumbles12 · 22/01/2016 18:10

Wow £40!! Shock

It's amazing how much it varies!
I think most people can 'afford' £5 in theory and would expect to pay something towards it as it isn't necessary but just an added extra. However £20 odd on photos many times through a pregnancy would add up!

The NHS is desperately short of money. I had to bring my own pillow to hospital. Turns out people had stolen them and ward had no budget to buy more. Scan pictures are lovely but not a medical necessity, like pps have said I am sure discretion is used in the case of poorly babies.

earhart00 · 02/04/2016 09:21

£10 for 1 scan photo that you have to download and print yourself!!! I'm really disappointed as just wanted the little picture to show the grandparents.

DrWhy · 02/04/2016 09:36

I didn't have to pay anything for mine - I suspect they are free in Scotland. I wouldn't have minded making a contribution but there wasn't any option to do so.
I had a trainee sonographer who took great care with everything including getting some nice photos and her measurements were then checked by the senior lady overseeing her - she was spot on, very impressed!

MrsSparkles · 02/04/2016 09:44

No charge first time round, with DD2 they suggested a charity donation (can't for the life of me remember which they were supporting!). I think that was a good idea, we got about 12 pictures and I think donated about £20.

SockQueen · 02/04/2016 10:24

£3 for one printed on the flimsy scanner paper, or £5 for proper photo paper. We were told this in advance in the appointment letter

They are, after all, providing a medical diagnostic service, not a photography studio.

Ilovenannyplum · 02/04/2016 10:37

I can't remember how much mine were but you had to buy tokens beforehand from a machine in the waiting room. The machine only accepted £1 coins so DP was running around the hospital cafes trying to get change as we didn't think to bring any. Nearly missed the bloody scan Confused

So maybe take plenty of change just in case!
