So last night OH bought home some mince pie icecream (I am 39+2 and need my treats!)

this: www.sainsburys.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?langId=44&productId=681260&storeId=10151&krypto=6%2BT8Q7vjgYIU4wtiqUJtj9igxyO28SHeN3YzsIp4%2BDq0r60xn1gVk%2Fw2R5S%2BN6oicLfOFBda%2BKOA%0AzXMwvvOOaRh2tWuY8RQbDfgLiScX3nPiY1LoNDB7WsErQeIPFY9eLuGG0OyWXa4iiS5QcmYwuQ%3D%3D

which all seemed well and lovely but it tasted very strongly of brandy. Are you sure there's no alcohol in this? I asked OH. Nothing on the label, says he, but it does taste rather strong.

So we go and read the ingredients, and lo and behold we see brandy about half way down the list. I had only had 2 spoons, but I was really miffed. Shouldn't this be advertised more clearly on the label? There is nothing on the front or in the description to say it has alcohol in it.

Sorry I've just seen the ingredients list. Ingredients are listed by amount, highest first. The brandy is quite a ways down that list so there will be relatively little it. Try not to worry.

Maybe because you've been abstinent since January you're more sensitive to alcohol smell / taste - as well as sometimes in pregnancy smell / taste sense is heightened?

M48294Y · 03/12/2015 20:54

Honestly, what is the point of this op? Please someone explain it to me.

Do you honestly think that the miniscule amount of alcohol that has got into your system at 39+ weeks is somehow bad? Aren't you even embarrassed by your question?

LittleMissAIBU · 03/12/2015 21:00

I wouldn't worry OP it will be such a tiny amount.

Why did I not know there was mince pie ice cream Shock it sounds amazing Xmas Smile

Slowjog · 03/12/2015 21:06

The guidelines in the uk are different to other countries. Have you read any studies on alcohol intake and pregnancy? It makes for interesting reading.

frillybiscuits · 03/12/2015 21:08

God some people are really mean on the pregnancy board. I once asked if my midwife was doing something wrong because my appointments weren't going along with the schedule I was given and I was told to stop being a bitch and criticising herHmm I guess some people are just very hormonal. I completely understand your worry, I've had 1 pint myself during my whole pregnancy but there's not much point in drinking if you can't get drunkWink I'll definitely be buying some of that ice cream though!

Scoopmuckdizzy · 03/12/2015 21:14

All I want to eat is mince pie ice cream now.

Kaytee1987 · 03/12/2015 21:22

I agree frilly biscuit the amount of nastiness on here sometimes is pretty bad, makes me want to avoid the whole website sometimes.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 03/12/2015 21:48

This is mumsnet. It's sensible and realistic, not frilly and hair strokey. The op is being a div, better she is told IMO

Louise34567 · 03/12/2015 21:55

The nastiness really isn't called for at all. There's no need to be mean - I agree with Kaytee and biscuits.

frillybiscuits · 03/12/2015 22:05

MN is a clear example of why I don't have many female friends Grin

M48294Y · 03/12/2015 22:09

I absolutely wouldn't stoop so low as to refer to op as "a div".

But this thread will stay in the Mumsnet archives forever. Did you know that? They don't delete any threads.

So in future, some anxious pregnant soul might be searching Mumsnet for advice on alcohol and pregnancy and come across this thread. And read that a person was worried about a - what?? - half a teaspoonful of brandy in some icecream when they were over 39 weeks.

Advice and opinions on here need to be reasonable at the very least for the sake of the lurkers and the future members. It doesn't do anyone any good to indulge irrational fears.

LyndaNotLinda · 03/12/2015 22:09

Thank you OP - I had no idea you could buy mince pie icecream! I'm going to Sainsbos tomorrow :)

ps you can eat the rest of the tub

toffeeboffin · 03/12/2015 22:09

I'd bloody kill for a warm mince pie and a splodge of brandy butter!

eurochick · 03/12/2015 22:30

This thread is one of the maddest things I have read on MN.

Runningupthathill82 · 03/12/2015 22:37

I had a glass of white wine today. It was lovely.
Hmm at the poster who said "there's no point in drinking if you can't get drunk" - erm, yes there is. I rarely get drunk when not pregnant, but I do like the taste of wine.

As for the OP, I have no idea what you're worried about (unless you washed the ice cream down with a few large, neat, brandies).
Do you on any level think you may have consumed enough alcohol to harm your baby? If so, then that level of worry honestly isn't warranted, and I would advise trying to relax a bit. A lot.

Runningupthathill82 · 03/12/2015 22:39

I should've made it clearer in my pp that I rarely get drunk when not pregnant, and DEFINITELY not when pregnant - it was rather unclear to say the least!

frillybiscuits · 03/12/2015 22:48

What I meant was, if I had a pint I would want more and I wouldn't be able to so what's the point of drinking when pregnant if you can't have more than one. If you like wine then fine but i prefer stronger tipples Wink

mellmumma · 03/12/2015 23:26

To the OP, you are not alone! 😛

I'm very early days of 7 weeks pregnant for the very first time, I'm still learning about what is and is not frowned upon.

I got a menu for my xmas party next week and thought I shouldn't have the brandy xmas pud, bailey's cheesecake or amaretto cake dessert for fear of being tutted at by my workmates (who know I am pregnant through no choice of my own).

so yep, some of us join this site because we are obviously idiots... 🙋 but we all have to start somewhere, I haven't seem a MW yet so learning it all online and figured better safe than sorry on most occasions!

please be gentle with me!

MrsCrimshaw · 04/12/2015 00:02

Blimey what have I started? My OP was more about clear labelling for foodstuffs with alcoholic content (for people such as pregnant women) and my concern that the ice cream hadn't been (and I think should have been). I was cross at the time as I had been so careful up until then. And secondly I suppose a little reassurance that it wasn't a problem, which it clearly isn't, and tbh I didnt really think it would be, i just wanted the backup for my piece of mind! Thank you to the people who don't mind dealing with "stupid" questions and I hope you all enjoy your mince pies ;)

Oh and I haven't been called a div since primary school, so that was interesting!

But don't you see? The label doesn't say "contains alcohol" for a reason. Because the alcohol content is virtually nil.

UmbongoUnchained · 04/12/2015 00:09

Neurotic is a bit of an understatement.

MrsCrimshaw · 04/12/2015 00:11

I can see that of course vagueideas but I'd still rather avoid it. That's up to me.

OP posts:
ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 04/12/2015 07:40

I meant div as an affectionate term - meaning a bit daft. Please don't take too much offence Wink

PennyHasNoSurname · 04/12/2015 07:55

Im up North and Div is definetly a soft insult - a par with "You dafty/silly sausage"

OP, have a nice glass of wine and relax Grin

Charitygirl1 · 04/12/2015 07:59

Good god. What developmental harm could you do a baby at 39 weeks. Being pregnant doesn't mean you can't think rationally.
