Tell me I'm still having a yellow baby!

This is probably the world's most stupid and needy pregnancy 'worry'. My husband and I really want a yellow baby and went for our 20 week scan two weeks ago. As soon as the sonographer put the thing on, and announced on that's the baby's bum was against screen.

Clearly you could see two butt cheeks and its two little thighs. It was very empty in the middle as its legs were open. I try to keep telling myself its penis could have been well tucked up, and the gap was just between the bum cheeks.

I know it makes no difference and we are having a healthy baby, but someone please tell me it could still be either? I just can't get that image out of my mind!

Well some of the posts made me laugh so I suppose they were not a complete waste of time. Will ensure thread titles are clearer next time....

Thank you for the people who have reassured me that we can't really know. It feels like a boy waits for people to mock for that idea so will probably end up saying I knew it whichever gender comes out. Grin

I don't think you're going to get much sympathy for this one.

Congratulations on your healthy baby.

Did you know that research suggests that a pregnant woman's intuition is right more often than can be accounted for by chance? None of the old wives tales has ever been shown to indicate the sex of the baby but the mother's 'hunch' has shown to be more accurate than guesswork.

I knew, absolutely categorically that my first was a girl. I dreamt she was a girl from conception, called her she automatically. My second was a boy and I had no gut feeling either way.

So you might be right. Or not. Grin

Best of luck for a continued healthy pregnancy.

WiIdfire · 21/11/2015 13:08

I persuaded myself mine was a girl as there was a conspicuous gap - HE is definitely not a girl!

And you are allowed to wish for a surprise without meaning you don't care about the health. So long as it doesnt override everything else.

53rdAndBird · 21/11/2015 13:16

I had a really really strong feeling that mine was a boy, and then caught a glimpse of what looked very like a penis on the scan by accident, so officially we didn't know but unofficially it was pretty much definite.

Nope. Girl. Blush

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 21/11/2015 13:47

How is 'team yellow' a very old fashioned way of saying anything? Use of 'team X' to denote supporting something only came out of the 90s at the earliest

Lweji · 21/11/2015 13:58

I have seen the same about intuition.

Mine is a boy and I immediately pictured it as a boy, even though I am feminist and then trained myself to think of the possibility of a girl.

He also very obvious male parts on the scan.

DON'T LOOK AT IT IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW!!! Then don't complain.

I also first thought you meant something like jaundiced Shock

Junosmum · 21/11/2015 14:14

We had the exact same experience at our 20 week scan (and were team yellow) so we assumed we were having a girl. I got the shock of my life at the placental placement scan last week, when the first thing I saw on screen was a penis! It was totally unexpected, and was meant to be the head! So yes, you are very much team yellow.

Raxacoricofallapatorius · 21/11/2015 14:41

Okay, not "team" yellow. My Grandma and all her friends always asked if the baby was blue, pink or yellow. They were anxious to knit and would go for white with a blue trim for a boy, white with a pink trim for a girl and yellow for sex as yet unknown. Both of mine were brought home in a yellow cardigan knitted by my Great Grandma.

"Team" yellow seems to be the most common modern incarnation of the term. A quick advance search shows how popular it is on antenatal threads. A wider google search shows how common it is on the WWW.

Junosmum · 21/11/2015 15:10

I personally prefer team green (I'm not a fan of yellow). But when I say that no one knows what I mean.

StrawberryTeaLeaf · 21/11/2015 15:13

'Team' this or that isn't so bad. But 'Yellow baby' makes me think of a jaundiced baby and 'Green baby' makes me think of a mouldy baby

Raxacoricofallapatorius · 21/11/2015 15:15

I think, on balance, 'baby' is just fine, isn't it? Grin

SpanglesGalloway · 21/11/2015 15:21

There is no way of being 100% sure of baby sex. Like others have said our friends were told baby was a girl and then surprise baby boy was born.

Also, please don't take this the wrong way but your really lucky this was the biggest thing you've walked away from your 20w scan with. I'm speaking from experience. Congratulations Flowers

StrawberryTeaLeaf · 21/11/2015 15:23

Yes 'baby' works Grin

EllieJayJay · 21/11/2015 15:29

Some people need to relax in the bath with a toaster... Geez!!

If she wants to use the term "yellow" let her, it's her baby and most people know what she means so leave the poor woman alone.

She just wanted to know if people thought it was possible it could still be a boy or if it was definetly a girl...

I don't know why people have to be so nasty

StrawberryTeaLeaf · 21/11/2015 15:32

Hello Ellie. You sound delightful Smile

I think this thread proves that a lot of people didn't understand, doesn't it? Grin

BeeMyBaby · 21/11/2015 16:09

I think sonography scans are harder to read than you think, DH was 90% sure he had seen a penis in DC2s 20 week scan. However, it turned out to be a girl. I think you only see like a slice of the baby so you wouldn't really see its bits right next to its bottom as you don't get to see anything at a distance.

CharlyWooplus2 · 21/11/2015 16:53

I was told I was expecting a girl at a scan at 26 weeks as they saw the bum shot with nothing between the legs. It was a boy! Thankfully I didn't go and buy anything gender specific as I already had a son and was being tight!

I just had my latest scan with number 3 and guessed another boy based, completely unscientifically, on the shape of it's head (just looks like my other boys). But I am laughing at myself as really I have no idea and will wait and see what they say at 20 weeks. I think the guessing part is one of the fun bits amidst all of the other pregnancy niggles Smile

SurlyCue · 21/11/2015 16:58

OP do you really want a boy? Youve said twice that it could still be a boy.

I didn't want to know with DS but there wasn't really any hiding it! We asked when it was DD as we had accidentally found out last time thanks to the unmistakable ultrasound image.

nooka · 21/11/2015 17:09

We didn't want to know with ds and didn't get any clues along the way. With dd we were open to the idea of knowing, but she crossed her legs at the 20 week scan so we went on being convinced that she was a boy. I had two or three scans just before she was born which also didn't give us any clues, despite asking (my waters broke early so they were checking fluids). A very private child, clearly!

AuntieStella · 21/11/2015 17:16

"Team yellow. Good grief."

Norwich City, I suppose, if it's put like that. Currently 15th (lost away to Chelsea today).

Green in the baby context would make me think hyperemesis Envy

EllieJayJay · 21/11/2015 17:37

strawberry I promise I am actually quite delightful :)

It was the forth post I read in a row where someone had posted something quite harmless and people jumped all over them like vultures - I just don't know why people have to be so bloody nasty sometimes.

As for most didn't understand, I don't think it's that difficult since most people knit clothes in yellow or white if there not sure what the sex of a newborn will be... My mum certainly has always done this (and is possibly frantically buying yellow wool as we speak for me) and I'm too tired to go through and do a straw poll but lots of people guessed. Or maybe it's just because I'm in my late 30's and therefore old :)
