Thoughts on looking pretty down below for birth? I normally keep myself tidy, but I can't see my fanny anymore and to be honest I don't think I can be arsed doing anything more than a clipper job :/ .

Ooh I've also had the excessive fanny sweat!!

It's come through my trousers and left a mark on the paper towel on the bed at the doctors before mortified

At my hospital the advice is to either use hair removal cream or wax if you want to remove bikini hair before the birth. Shaving cause tiny abrasions on the skin which can become infected more easily.

If you're going for a wax, make sure you pick a waxer that uses 'hot wax' rather than strip wax. With this type of wax the skin is protected with oil or talc so there is no trauma to the skin.

As an intimate waxer, I wax pregnant ladies all the time. My advice is to start getting waxed as early in your pregnancy as possible as you'll then be used to it and the hair growth greatly reduced by the time you get to the big day. I never understood girls waiting until 9 months to get their first wax. Ouch!

My BF is my midwife as she said as long as its tidy not to worry about pube styles! She did say however, it's pretty grim when someone comes in with really long matted moist pubes which they have to rummage through to see what they need to. Plus, if they need stitches, it's not very nice for the mum to have to have her bush shaved with a cheap single blade hospital razor!! Bleurghh!!

bittapitta · 21/11/2015 07:07

Wow your BF sounds really professional Sal Hmm

toohardtothinkofaname · 21/11/2015 07:37

I'm assuming she was telling her as a friend at that point bitta...

JellyBaby26 · 21/11/2015 07:45

I was very paranoid about this and will be again this time I think but I did shit myself in the pool which I think was more embarrassing.

Sal1977 · 21/11/2015 09:01

She's totally unprofessional Bitta. She said she physically gasps and gags and points and summons other health care professionals into the room when she comes across a real 'growler' in the delivery suite.

She also puts full names and addresses and photos of said growlers on Facebook whilst tagging the owners.

I had stitches without the hospital needing to shave meConfused

Lemonfizzypop · 21/11/2015 09:10

I did mine at 37 weeks and it was such a fucking effort I thought "glad that's one job done" however I then went 2 weeks overdue so was pretty wild down there when it came to it anyway.
I really doubt anyone gives a shit, when you're looking at babies popping out of fanjos all day I doubt a hairy muff is gonna shock you.

Dd is 2 weeks now and I still haven't shaved as I had some lovely stitches, it feels quite liberating!

Lemonfizzypop · 21/11/2015 09:11

Oh yeah and they didn't shave me for my stitches!

BertrandRussell · 21/11/2015 09:21

And to think that many of your mothers will have been among those that campaigned against the automatic shaving women used to endure when they were admitted to the labour ward!

BertrandRussell · 21/11/2015 09:25

I call bullshit. Very convenient that an "intimate waxer" should have a friend who is a midwife whose views differ radically from any midwife anyone else has ever spoken to on the subject.

lanbro · 21/11/2015 09:36

I had intended to wax legs and shave my 'noo noo' but dd1 arrived 18 days early, very quickly so I could've plaited my leg hair and god knows what my muff looked like! With dd2 I couldn't have cared less, and she was early and even quicker so any plans would've gone out the window anyway!

EdithWeston · 21/11/2015 09:37

You don't need shaving for stitches. A MW would know that.

Also that waxing also causes the sort of micro-abrasions as shaving, and is also not good close to delivery for that reason. (also, pain threshold changes during PG, as does likelihood of getting a reaction even to things you've been perfectly fine with before. So don't use even a familiar depilatory cream without patch testing every time, and consider swerving it completely in the last weeks)

CrayonShavings · 21/11/2015 09:38

What a depressing thread!

CatThiefKeith · 21/11/2015 09:44

What crayons said.

Crazybaglady · 21/11/2015 09:57

I got the lot waxed off!

Paperblank · 21/11/2015 10:03

Looking pretty down below???

Really?!? It ain't gonna look pretty afterwards.

I couldn't care less what anyone thinks about the state of my public hair. I'm having a baby not preparing to be in playboy.

Chippednailvarnish · 21/11/2015 10:07

Completely agree with both of these.
I'm struggling to see why anyone (especially those who have actually given birth) would worry about their body hair, given a baby is heading towards your vagina who is about to massively change your life. Forever.

As for naming your genitals after a hoover, the mind boggles.

Sal1977 · 21/11/2015 10:52

Trust me, I couldn't give a hoot whether pregnant (or non pregnant women for that matter) women shave their bits, wax their bits or let birds nest in their under growth. It is what it is folks! Do what feels right for you and never feel pressure to do one thing or the other! At the end of the day, are you really gonna give a shit when you're in mid labour? I know I won't!

Not sure why it's 'convenient' Bert? The only convenience for me is that she's currently MY midwife and I get to have all my appointments sat on my sofa! Grin

BertrandRussell · 21/11/2015 11:22

Her professionalism knows no bounds.......Hmm

goodnightdarthvader1 · 21/11/2015 12:03

"long matted pubic hair"

Yeah, that happens.

TwigsWithStupidLittleLightsOn · 21/11/2015 12:05

I tried shaving in the bath this morning (31 weeks so for my own benefit rather than that of HCPs). It was not pretty. 'Patchy' would be an understatement. I'm going to heave to go back in for another go tomorrow Grin

OP, midwives and doctors aren't going to give a shit what your hairstyle is like. However if it makes you feel better about yourself then just do what you need to do.

BertrandRussell · 21/11/2015 12:06

....that a midwife has to rummage through.......

Yeah, that happens too.

SoupDragon · 21/11/2015 12:06

Noo noo?

goodnightdarthvader1 · 21/11/2015 12:07

soup I know. WTF is wrong with "vulva"? Do people come up with cutesy names for their elbow?
