I am 40+2 today...

Quite surprised as DS1 came bang on his due date and I thought second babies were likely to come earlier! Absolutely no signs of anything happening so far...

Consultant wants to book me in for an induction next Monday but I think I'd rather wait it out until I get to 42 weeks (please God don't let me get to 42 weeks!).

Anyone else want to join the thread and keep me company?!

An update in case anyone is interested!

Went to the hospital today. Midwife did an examination (my God it was painful!) and my cervix is "unfavourable" apparently - i.e. no signs that anything is going to happen anytime soon. Had a CGT (fine) and scan (fine).

Had a long chat with the doctor on duty. We have agreed I will go in for a sweep and pessary on Thursday (when I will be 41+3), then go back in every day for monitoring until Monday (when I will be 42 weeks) for a CS (i.e. not going down the syntocinon route).

Come on baby, please come before Monday!

Hi dimple hands

Sounds like you have a good plan in place. That is great they will give you a pessary and then let you go home and back in for monitoring, they won't do that here unfortunately. Fingers crossed your cervix has dilated a little before your sweep. I have had two so far and am having another tomorrow! I have found them mildly uncomfortable but fine really, I think that's because my cervix is slightly dilated already.

I'm pretty sure the hospital won't book in an induction for a weekend but haven't actually asked so will do that!

Sophiemills84 · 16/11/2015 22:25

Hi all, I'm 40 + 2 today. Lots of bouncing on my ball and relaxing. Was 10 days late with number 1 so am hoping I'm not that late with this one.

With the whole induction process...you don't HAVE to go ahead with it do you? You can wait if you want to...I've had friends who've waited until 43 weeks. Baby knows when it's ready surely?! X

DimpleHands · 16/11/2015 22:48

Oof Acquiescence two sweeps - just the thought makes my eyes water! If just the examination was so painful for me I am dreading the sweep on Thursday (this doesn't bode well for my plan to have a drug-free labour does it?! Grin ). I asked my hospital and they said they do book inductions for Saturday and Sunday so hopefully yours will too and then you can delay things for another day or two.

Sophie - Welcome to the club! No you don't have to be induced but most doctors recommend it around 41+5/42 weeks - apparently there is a risk the placenta can deteriorate after that point which means the baby may not be getting all the nutrients/oxygen it needs and there is a slightly higher risk of stillbirth (although still very small). I think there is also a higher risk of the baby getting in distress in labour (increased chance of passing meconium and sometimes increased chance of getting stuck because of larger size). Having said that, some people do wait until after 42 weeks like your friend and everything is fine. It's a really tricky one! You basically have to weigh up the risks of induction against the risks of going post-term.

First sweep today...lets hope this kicks everything off!

DimpleHands · 17/11/2015 12:08

Good luck Sophie let us know how it goes!

Hey all

Welcome Sophie, good luck with the sweep!

I am feeling happy as I think things are starting to progress for me- had period type pains since last night which have turned into reasonably regular but quite mild contractions. I have an appointment with my midwife at 2.30 so am going to go and see her rather than calling the home birth team as I think it is still early days. I have had some red blood and brown blood type discharge so hoping this is my cervix thinning.

Looking forward to others updates!

Sophiemills84 · 17/11/2015 13:34

Urgh...not good. Midwife couldn't tell if baby was breach or not so I have to go to the hospital later to get a scan. I really hope it isn't, turning the baby and c sections would be my worst nightmare. Sad

Sophiemills84 · 17/11/2015 13:36

And good luck...definitely sounds like the early signs of labour!!!

DimpleHands · 17/11/2015 13:44

Acquiescence that's great news! Definitely sounds like things are kicking off! I had the same thing the day before I had DS1.

Sorry to hear that Sophie, what a pain. Let us know what the scan says. If this is your second then maybe there is still time for the baby to move into the right position - I think second babies can sometimes float around quite a bit up until labour as they have more room.

Hi all!! I'm 40+2. Tried all sorts to get things moving! Sex, curry, walking, birth ball and good old relaxation.....NOTHING! I'm on the verge of giving up I must say! I'm reluctant to be induced as well its bloody excruciating and id quite like to experience a natural labour with natural contractions! (induced with my 1st) I know he'll be here soon..but not soon enough!! Hows everyone else finding 40 weeks+

TakesTwoToTango · 17/11/2015 14:07

Good luck acquiescence and Sophie with your scan!

I'm 40+2 and no signs here but I'm feeling quite comfortable so that's good Smile will try and get a walk in today and see if that helps.

DimpleHands · 17/11/2015 14:22

Welcome eiysmummyc! I feel a bit better now that I have an ELCS booked in for Monday (when I'll be 42 weeks) - although hopefully it will come before then, fingers crossed. How many weeks were you when you got induced with your first? And how did it go?

OP posts:
Sophiemills84 · 17/11/2015 20:02

Scan went well, baby is in the right position and not breach!! So relieved!!
Next midwife appointment is on Monday but I'm really hoping baby comes earlier than that. It's getting so uncomfortable now...back on the bouncy ball!! X

TakesTwoToTango · 17/11/2015 20:26

Hurrah Sophie! Good news Smile

eiysmummyc · 17/11/2015 20:32

Hi DimpleHands. Fingers crossed it starts naturally. But bet you feel loads better now you have a guaranteed date youll meet your little one! I was 40+15 with my first! It went okay I guess but would do anything to avoid being hooked up to a drop this time round. But hey! Either way I just cannot wait to me him! Hopefully sooner rather than later!

austengirl · 17/11/2015 22:42

Hi ladies,

Pleased to say that things did kick off naturally early Sunday morning--long day in hospital where not everything went without incident, but very thankful to have been in labour and given birth in under 24 hours. DS arrived at 22.50 Sunday night weighing 8lbs 5oz. Turns out he was back to back initially, which was bloody painful, and made the decision about whether or not to get an epidural much easier (thankfully he turned before I was fully dilated). I ended up having my waters broken and on the hormone drip in the delivery unit, but it helped things progress. So some induction but not from scratch.

My fingers are crossed for you all!

TakesTwoToTango · 18/11/2015 02:18

Congratulations Austen!!!

Sophiemills84 · 18/11/2015 08:37

Congratulations!

eiysmummyc · 18/11/2015 11:33

Congrats Austen!

DimpleHands · 19/11/2015 09:53

Austen - Great news, congratulations! I had the same back to back labour with my DS1 and vividly remember the pain! Sounds like all in all it went OK for a first labour. Hope the first few days have been OK!

Eiysmummyc - Yes I really really want to avoid the drip too! How are you doing? Any news?

Sophie - Great news re the scan, bet you are relieved.

Acquiescence - Any news?! Hope things kept going and that you have now had your baby!

Anyone else any news?!

I am 40+10 today Sad. Got a reflexology session this afternoon followed by the dreaded sweep! Babysitter booked for tomorrow night so that DH and I can go out for a hot curry! Then just keeping fingers crossed things happen before Monday (when I'll be 42 weeks) when ELCS is booked in!

Hi, is anyone else overdue with no.3?

My other two were both born at 38 weeks, and I'm now 40+6 with this one... Booked for a home birth, but starting to wonder if I'll go past the cut-off point.

Midwife said she'd be 'gobsmacked' if I hadn't had it by middle of next week. Really hope she's right!

eiysmummyc · 19/11/2015 21:10

Getting fed up now DimpleHands . Not quite as late as you, 40+4 today. No sign of anything significant! A few little niggles that amount to nothing! How are you getting on? Any closer to meeting your LO?

DimpleHands · 19/11/2015 22:00

Failed sweep again today - stupid cervix is still "unfavourable"! I give up! Got to go into hospital every day now for monitoring which is a real bore.

Reflexology session earlier today doesn't seem to have got things moving although it was very relaxing! Acupuncture session tomorrow - will post an update after that!
