What do babies actually sleep in ie. crib or moses basket etc? !

Cot is too big for our room....

-Was going to buy moses basket but read they'll last a matter of weeks?
-Will a crib last 6 months (that's how long we're hoping to have baby in with us for)?
-What do they sleep in downstairs during the day? I assumed it'd be the carry cot that came with my travel system but from what I've read it'll outgrow that quickly too.

I'm soo confused and want to spend our money wisely
Would appreciate your experiences!

Mine slept in a crib in our bedroom then a cot bed when they went into their own room. Downstairs we had a Moses basket. I can't remember how long they fitted it for, it wasn't six months, more like 5.

My DD hated her Moses basket, she would stick her arms out and touch the sides then wake herself up every 10 sodding minutes
We eventually gave that up and put her in her cot in our room and she slept better from there. Daytime we put her on the sofa and sat with her or she slept on us, she wouldn't be put down until she was about 5 months for daytime sleeps. Then by about 9m she went in her cot for all sleep.
I really think it depends on the baby. You might just have to play it by ear.

Mine only slept in Moses basket (up and downstairs) until almost 4 months. We had room for the cot as well though.
They did start to have daytime naps in the nursery before they went in at night.
Never had a carrycot.

myotherusernameisbetter · 07/10/2015 20:40

We had a crib downstairs and upstairs (both donated/borrowed from relatives), never had a moses basket - they outgrew the crib probably before 6 months - but they were big babies - it wasn't so much the length they outgrew, but they kept on bumping their arms off the sides and it would wake them up. When they were in the cot upstairs, we had a travel cot/playpen downstairs that they would sleep in.......but, the best thing we had was a baby sheepskin and they would sleep on that wherever we were so, pre crawling we could pop it in a corner and they would happily sleep there and even after they were mobile they would crawl over to it and have a nap when they got sleepy :) It also made the travel cot more comfy too.

Newborn babies sleep on your chest WinkShock.

FATEdestiny · 07/10/2015 20:55

Remove a chest of drawers from your bedroom and fit a cot in the space it creates.

Downstairs - bouncy chair

HazleNutt · 07/10/2015 20:56

co-sleeper upstairs, hammock and sleepyhead downstairs. Both kids hated moses basket

LikeASoulWithoutAMind · 07/10/2015 21:00

We had a crib upstairs and downstairs the baby slept in the pram.
The crib lasted 4-5 months.

A moses basket is definitely more portable than a crib though but don't think it would last as long as the crib.

Travel cots are usually a bit smaller than standard cots if space is tight?

icclemunchy · 07/10/2015 21:03

On my chest, or daddy's chest, or Nannys chest WinkGrin

At night in my bed although she had a Moses basket she hated a crib that wasn't much better and now has a cot she's slept in once before I realised getting out of bed is 8 million times harder than just rolling over and offering a boob

eurochick · 07/10/2015 21:07

We had a bednest in our room and used the carrycot for daytime naps (some specifically indicate that they are suitable for longer sleeping - we got one of these). We used both of these until around six months.

Peaceloveandjammydodgers · 07/10/2015 21:09

Carry cot or Moses basket up and downstairs for 6-8 weeks, then cot in our room until 4 months, then cot in their room. We were not good roomies Wink
Mine just slept anywhere though. Chest, car seat, floor...

CityDweller · 07/10/2015 21:14

bedside crib in our room (bednest) and when downstairs mostly on me, or DH. And then in the pram when she was a bit older (3 months)

Nousername2015 · 07/10/2015 21:15

I've just bought a chicco lullago for our room as that looks like it will last longer than a moses basket. It's technically a travel cot but a lot of people who have reviewed it used it as a permanent crib. It's on offer in tesco at the moment, takes the same sheet size as the next to me so think mattress might be the same size? Fingers crossed baby likes it!
Downstairs - either pram carrycot or bouncy chair. Not thought about what will happen when he grows out of them!

villainousbroodmare · 07/10/2015 21:22

I got a Cocoonababy which was LOVELY, comfy and portable from our bed as a safe co-sleeper to the kitchen table to outside for a picnic snoozer. He's just finished with it (10 weeks) as he can roll over, at which point you're supposed to stop using it. Now he's in a Sleepyhead which is nothing like as nice a thing and honestly you could McGyver it yourself.

MargaretCabbage · 07/10/2015 21:26

We had a Moses basket and it wasn't used for very long as he hated it. We took out the drawers from our room and put them in the nursery and moved the cot into our room. We also used a Sleepyhead in the cot. Day time naps were usually on me, sometimes in his Sleepyhead.

WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 07/10/2015 21:30

Remove a chest of drawers from your bedroom and fit a cot in the space it creates.

The only way we'd get a cot in our bedroom would be if we removed the bed!

Mine is 12 weeks, she sleeps in a Moses basket at night and on me/in the sling during the day (she won't be put down!). She's a big baby, 98fh centile but I reckon we'll get another couple of months out of her Moses basket.

If it helps I've bought a crib, cot AND moses basket off ebay for £25. We got a small cot rather than a cot bed as it will fit in our room. I then bought new mattresses for them all.

I plan to use the crib in our room and moses basket in the lounge.

elQuintoConyo · 07/10/2015 22:06

On my chest.
On daddy's chest.
Co-slept until age 3.8.
DS went into his own bed in his own room last August without so much as a peep.

We had a mini cot (don't know the technical term: small, portable cot-thing on wheels), and that green Ikea cot, never came out of its box.

DS was a super-shit sleeper unless snuggled up to us like a baby polar bear Grin It's been two months, but I still miss him!

StubbleTurnips · 07/10/2015 22:12

Same as Quinto

In our bed
On us
On our chests

Anywhere that wasn't specifically designed for sleep.

Cockbollocks · 07/10/2015 22:17

I can highly recommend a Snuzpod for the bedroom - my 23Ib monster baby is still in it at nearly 6 months. Its fab.

Pram carrycot is fine for downstairs you will be trapped under the baby in any case

Roastturnip · 07/10/2015 22:46

DD would sleep nowhere apart from near me/on me!

HaloEveSteve · 07/10/2015 22:48

Mine slept in her on us and in her Moses basket for six months, maybe more, but she is quite a small baby. Then she moved to a cot/our bed.

Personally I'd start with a Moses basket as they are cheapest, then if you find that isnt working out you can try something else.

SnozzberryPie · 07/10/2015 23:03

Dd started in a moses basket then at about four months we moved her into a crib. She then started to refuse to sleep unless attached to my boob so we took a side off the crib and pushed it up against our bed. That worked for a couple of months till she decided she would only sleep in the middle of our bed, between dp and me.

Eventually at about 1 year old she moved into a cot bed in her own room, although she would often end up back in with us by morning until she was around 18 months and had stopped breastfeeding.

Dc2 is due soon and I think we'll put him in the crib attached to our bed at night and let him sleep in the carrycot from the pram in the daytime.

blibblobblub · 07/10/2015 23:15

4.5mo DD sleeps in Sleepyhead in bedside crib at night, then through the day the Sleepyhead gets put on the living room floor and she sleeps in there.

Well, in theory anyway, 9 times out of 10 she has her daytime sleeps on me or in the sling or car...
