We kept both of ours in freezer and had a tree planting ceremony on their first birthdays, haven't had third one long enough yet! yes ,boring,I know, dwarf trees are very special to them both.Have you done anything more interesting with yours?Or does this make you cringe?

Actually the thought is making me wonder if I shouldn't be a vegetarian.

Use a good sharp knife, chop it up and lightly fry with onions. Place in a slow cooker with chopped carrots, mushrooms, parsnip.
Add lots of thyme half an hour before turning off.

Succulent, juicy, tender.....

The placenta is a waste product once the baby is born and serves no purpose so I can't personally see the point in keeping it but everyone to their own. I would have draw the line at eating it though, thats just gross. Just think where it has come out of!!!

It says on one of those websites that you can make it into 'placenta essence' and use it for PND - surely mixing it with vodka would get you half cut! Suppose it could make you see the funny side

I know of a community midwife who in 30 years of midwifery has cut up and cooked the placenta twice- both times when the mother had lost a lot of blood and couldn't be transferred to hospital fast enough for various reasons. Both times it was eaten only by the mother.

She said that it was better than a transfusion and both mothers didn't have to transfer in the end. In fact, she reckoned they looked fantastic after eating it and certainly in one case may have saved a woman's life.

We are the only mammals that don't do it. Having said that, when I've had this baby I'll be planting it under the apple tree DH bought me as a wedding gift. But I'm a knit your own muesli type.

I wouldn't have wanted to bring mine home ansd only glanced at it as i had a c section. My sister had a natural birth and I was her birthing partner and i did look at her placenta it looked strange with all the veins etc.

lulumama · 01/12/2006 17:32

yes nannynickers///but you only have a few drops at a time!!!!!!

zippitippitoes · 01/12/2006 17:41

it would be worth considering if a baby plant grew.. a lot simpler than going through the whole thing over again

Tinkerboo · 01/12/2006 17:49

Last I saw of mine was in a photo.

Dh instructed to take pics of me and newborn DS. When I went to pick the photos up a week later, instead of the lovely mummy and baby head and shoulder shots I'd envisaged I was faced with me with legs wide open and placenta emerging from fanjo. Baby was also somewhere in the shot. DH said he didn't notice!

I had to change the place I had my photos developed!

ClementClarkeMoore · 01/12/2006 18:10

You could make mince pies with it at this time of year

redbeki · 01/12/2006 21:47

In all honesty I didnt bond that well with the placenta.

Woollymummy · 01/12/2006 23:04

I like the idea of eating it, and DP offered to cook it for me when I was fed up one day, but I am waiting to choose a tree to plant before I defrost it. I guess it is the only part of a human I would be prepared to eat!
