We kept both of ours in freezer and had a tree planting ceremony on their first birthdays, haven't had third one long enough yet! yes ,boring,I know, dwarf trees are very special to them both.Have you done anything more interesting with yours?Or does this make you cringe?

Excuse my ignorance, but why do people eat placentas - nutrition, ritual?

TheBlonde · 30/11/2006 13:31

I considered packing some tupperware and then taking it home to freeze but on the day I didn't fancy it

I do have a photo of it though

TooTickyDoves · 30/11/2006 13:33

Oh, I wish I'd kept them! Love the tree idea. The whole waste/incineration thing makes me very uncomfortable.

lulumama · 30/11/2006 13:37

eating placenta

the eating it as a way to prevent PND or making placenta essence seems a big reason!

Rantum · 30/11/2006 13:37

Sorry, trying to keep an open mind... but why?

Rantum · 30/11/2006 13:39

Thanks Lulumama - makes sense (don't fancy it myself but can see logic), now what about planting it - why that?

Kelly1978 · 30/11/2006 13:40

I can't say I would have wanted to keep mine. I wish I had seen the twins' one though, I've only ever had a quick glance at dd's so never really seen one properly.

VoodooKumquat · 30/11/2006 13:41

sadly, mine wouldnt come out until I had two yes, 2, operations to scrape it all out. After that, I wasnt exactly going to frame it, or eat it, or whatever those twisted characters do with the damn things.

lulumama · 30/11/2006 13:42

the planting , as far as i can see...it is planted and then a tree grown on top of it..the placenta breaks down & nourishes the tree, which grows as the baby grows..so it is a reflection of the child developing..and a special thing for them to see when they are older...ASFAIK

VoodooKumquat · 30/11/2006 13:43

sorry didnt mean to sound grumpy, the tree thing is pleasant enough.

lulumama · 30/11/2006 13:45

'twisted characters'? the placenta is very special to many mums..it has nourished and sustained the baby in utero for 9 months and having it incinerated is not everyones option....

i can see, though, if you had had to have it surgically removed..then you would be glad to see the back of yours , as it were!

placenta-envy?

big X Lulu/Doul-oo

3xamum · 30/11/2006 13:49

Like others here I didn't really know there was an option to do anything with it when I had my older too. I think whatever floats your boat is fine, they don't gross me out anymore after seeing one dissected on my 1st night in my new job - A maternity unit btw- lol

lulumama · 30/11/2006 13:50

placenta envy? can you imagine...taking pics of the placenta..handing them around...

"mine is so lovely and well shaped..look at those blood vessels!really well formed....and so tasty"

LOL !

Rantum · 30/11/2006 13:54

tree thing is nice enough, although not really a thing for me I think. I am probably too pragmatic about these things but was glad that the function of pregnancy served its purpose and gave me a beautiful ds, but was more than happy to say goodbye to placenta and many other necessary parts of pregnancy. In much the same way that i am pleased my body produced milk for bfing but did not keep a frozen vile of it to water flowers or drink with ds and friends on his 21 birthday...

redbeki · 30/11/2006 13:55

its a mammal thing to eat it,goes way back, and its supposed to be amazing for p.n.d..when nutrition was scarce many moons ago,it would've been a feast i suppose.if it wasn't 4 my fella grappling it off the nurse we wouldnt have had any of ours.they look at you like u r crazy! I agree tho,its the last thing you think of wen u've just given birth.maybe thats a job for the men?

JoolsToo · 30/11/2006 14:34

I can't imagine why anyone would want to do anything with it at all.

We made a very nice 'placenta wellington' with it. Like beef wellington except, well, you know...

It was succulent, juicy, that rich placental flavour lifted by the tangy mustard and with delicate flaky pastry around. mmmm.

aDadOnMumsnet · 30/11/2006 15:58

No, the thought of doing anything with the placenta turns my stomach tbh!

lulumama · 30/11/2006 16:03

actually....that sounds rather delicious!
