Are we seriously not allowed to use bleach in early stages of pregnancy?

I was shopping in Tesco today with a friend and in the cleaning aisle and went to get my usual Domestos bleach and my friend said i should be avoiding using bleach during the early stages of pregnancy. Is this true? I only want to put bleach down my loo lol. Are we seriously not allowed to use bleach at the moment x

Ignore your friend! I wouldn't sit there inhaling the stuff in a small enclosed space but you are perfectly fine to use bleach in a normal fashion!

donyourway · 02/09/2015 22:46

Ok thanks Impatientwino. Anyone else? I'm dying the put bleach down as i ran out of bleach last friday so it could defintely do with some but my friend has freaked me out now x

Have you looked at the NHS website on things to avoid in pregnancy? It's very good. Can't understand why you believe your friend's scaremongering but hey ho.

PS welcome - don't end posts with "x" on Mumsnet Wink

Runningupthathill82 · 02/09/2015 22:49

Eh? Never heard that. And I'm 20 weeks pg with my second. Have used bleach regularly throughout both pregnancies...

donyourway · 02/09/2015 22:51

lol why no x on end of post?

Op's friend is scaremongering because chucking a bit of bleach down the loo is perfectly safe during pregnancy, bitta, why wouldn't it be?

donyourway · 02/09/2015 22:57

To be fair to her she is not normally a drama Queen rather more of a sensible one so its definitely got me thinking.

Exactly Flogging I said I cannot understand why the OP believes her ill-informed friend.

MrsJudgyPants · 02/09/2015 23:01

Household bleach poses no additional risks to pregnant women and their unborn children. It'll hurt your eyes and skin, but no more so because you're pregnant.

Maybe the friend is getting confused with hair colourings?

bittapitta · 02/09/2015 23:02

It's got you thinking OP but you didn't think to verify the information using a medical resource like the NHS website? Okay then.

Floggingmolly · 02/09/2015 23:03

Sorry, bitta, I read your post as "can't understand why you believe your friend is scaremongering".

I worked in a laboratory around much more dangerous chemicals than bleach all through my pregnancy. Don't drink or eat it and you'll be fine. Grin

Gunpowder · 02/09/2015 23:08

People ask stuff all the time on MN that they could probably get from a government or NHS website. It's the modern equivalent of asking your granny or neighbour rather than consulting the encyclopaedia, isn't it? I can't see the problem.

OP, bleach the loo to your hearts content. X

Gunpowder · 02/09/2015 23:10

And yes, of course when it's a life or death situation it's a problem. But forums are great for discussion of mild pregnancy related anxieties IMO.

donyourway · 02/09/2015 23:11

I feel silly now lol. First time pregnant here so its all new to me. Ran out of bleach last Friday so it could do with some. The bugs and germs must think they've found a cushty nook.

Your fine to use bleach on loo Maybe your friend worried about you inhaling the fumes. I hate smell of bleach so rarely use it.

Congratulations on your pregnancy.

The x at end of posts doesn't go down well here as it brings people out in a netmums rash.

I gave people the rash a few times

Koalafications · 02/09/2015 23:23

We don't 'x'

We don't Hun

We don't bubs

We don't 'lil man'

We don't 'princess'

MrsJudgyPants · 02/09/2015 23:28

you forgot the (((((hugs)))))

MrsFrancisUnderwear · 02/09/2015 23:28

We don't "hubby" either or "hugz" (that is a definite no). We also don't say "please recommend me a.........." as we know that's incorrect grammar as is "I was LAYING there"

Got it?

PS and be careful how you pronounce/spell "chest of drawers".

DotaDay · 02/09/2015 23:35

You can use bleach.

You can x.

You can lol.

There are no Mumsnet rulz other than a general not being nasty to other posters, not being a troll, not spamming and not being racist, disabalist etc, etc.

ok, using Hun might be a step to far Wink

X

Koalafications · 02/09/2015 23:37

Don't listen to DotaDay it's a trap!

Oh yes, MrsJudgyPants is right, there are no hugs either. MrsFrancis is right, too - no hubz allowed.

Dixiechick17 · 03/09/2015 05:32

Agreed with dotaday

This whole netmums cr@p is stupid! If you want to use hon, x, lol etc then use them. I'm sure if you spoke to the Mumsnet moderators they wouldn't care! People making comments about not fitting in for using those words make me cringe, and have no right to say you can't use them.

Also nothing wrong with having a paranoid moment because of what a friend has said to you, first time being pregnant can throw up a whole new world of worries. Hope all goes great with the pregnancy OP.

Dixiechick17 · 03/09/2015 05:33

Am not a newbie myself by the way, new account since the hack and I've never been lectured on the use of those things.
