6 week 2 days Ultrasound with Heartbeat

I had my 2nd ultrasound yesterday and was able to see my tiny bean on the.screen and listen to the heartbeat! Did anybody else hear the heartbeat this early?? What did it sound like for you? I actually had to ask the tech..."are you sure that's not my heartbeat" because I was so scared to be happy, surprised and overwhelmed!! Then came the tears!

I had scans at that stage many of them and although could see heartbeat we were allowed to hear it as they said sometimes doesn't pick it up at that stage I didn't hear heartbeat until 18 weeks. Also it sounded like a very fast normal heartbeat like the beat of a drum but faster x

horsewalksintoabar · 02/09/2015 01:04

Yes. It's not unusual. Congratulations.

LunasMom · 02/09/2015 01:41

Thank you both for your answers. I was just so curious what it should sound like at this early stage as I wasn't told the actual heart rate (BPM). Anyhow, I'm not going to worry myself over nothing and can't wait until I get to see (and hear) my baby again.

Yep, heard both heartbeats with DS1 and 2 at 5+6 - DS1 was very fast and strong, DS2's was slower - OBGYN reckoned it had just started beating a few hours earlier.

It's magic.

LunasMom · 02/09/2015 01:58

Hi Stroke, thanks for your reply, I really found yours reassuring as you had both faster and slower heart beats that early. I think and pray my little bean will be just fine :) So happy I got to see and hear so early, I feel bad for those denied a scan until 12+ weeks!! I would go mental.

I've had a lot of CTG monitoring and to me it sounds like galloping horses!

scarednoob · 02/09/2015 08:40

Pressed post too soon - congratulations!

Focusfocus · 02/09/2015 10:13

Nothing unusual at all. Scanned at 6 weeks 1 day and saw heartbeat the moment the probe touched my belly - didn't even have to be transvaginal and she turned the audio on and THUMP THUMP THUMP it was. Totally usual!

Focusfocus · 02/09/2015 10:14

Ours were private scans by the way

LunasMom · 02/09/2015 14:59

Thanks noob & focus, mine were not private scans :)

Were you having problems then that the NHS offered the early scans? Its unusual to offer any scans until 12 weeks unless there has been an issue of some sort. Its not a wuestion of people being denied private scans - rather its simply not protocol to offer them as standard. I hope you're all clear now with the scan showing the heartbeat!!

Focusfocus · 02/09/2015 15:24

denied early scans I meant, not private scans*

maybebabybee · 02/09/2015 15:28

Congratulations :)

TBH the reason they don't offer early scans as standard on the NHS is because sadly they don't offer any guarantees...the 12 week mark is when things are more likely to be ok, even if you do get a heartbeat at 6 weeks etc.

Not that I am trying to put a downer on your scan (I had several early scans myself and loved them!) but that is why they don't offer them generally speaking.

LunasMom · 02/09/2015 15:34

Hi Both Focus and Maybe,

I really think it depends on your doctors preference. I know other who had early scans as well (between 6-8 weeks). I had no complications that would have suggested that I NEEDED an early scan...that is just my doctors procedure....whether its for her to determine a viable pregnancy or for the patients peace of mind, that I don't know. Maybebabybee is right, they usually don't give them to people so early because even if everything looks great, really anything could happen up until 12 weeks....BUT with that being said, my doctor confirmed that once you confirm a strong heartbeat the chances of miscarriage are drastically reduced - and I feel much better now that I saw and heard my baby.

You mention a "doctor" - is this not the NHS then? the NHS doesn't involve doctors with preganancies - ots midwife led unless the pregnancy is a high risk pregnancy.

I havent seen a doctor all through this pregnancy and I am due to give birth next month.

We are speaking purely about the NHS - and the NHS protocol is absolutely to not offer scans based on individual preferences untill the "dating scan".

if you are not the NHS, or not midwife led thats a different matter.

LunasMom · 02/09/2015 16:22

A general practitioner, employed through the NHS, is a doctor...so I don't know what you consider a doctor in the case. Anyways I was just looking for some positive reinforcement, not really a debate, so thank you all for your input, I am grateful and happy to have received my early ultrasound.

Focusfocus · 02/09/2015 16:45

There's nobdebate and no need for any unpleasantness. What you are describing is extremely unusual and naturally people are very curious.

Focusfocus · 02/09/2015 16:49

And everyone's already said that a heartbeat at 6 plus 2 is very normal and we've all had it. So, unless There is a problem, no need for positive reinforcemeent beyond that. You put in bold that it was not a private scan which is what naturally made people curious as NHS absolutely doesn't offer these in usual circumstances.

Bells2307 · 02/09/2015 17:00

Hi, I saw my doctor (gp) at my first pregnancy (which ended in miscarriage at 12 weeks) and I've also seen her this time round as well as the midwife. After my miscarriage I've been offered early scans, my first being today at 5 weeks due to some pains, originally they were going to start scanning at 7 weeks. They offered the early scans after my miscarriage and to book in early once I was pregnant again. I think things are just a bit different depending on which surgery and trust your with. Luckily mine are really helpful ????

RooibosTeaAgain · 02/09/2015 17:00

Have heard heartbeats at 5+3 in 2 pregnancies - one healthy born baby and one third trimester stillbirth. No difference at early scan in either pregnancies. Baby was just a few mm at both scans - it is amazing what technology can show you.

RooibosTeaAgain · 02/09/2015 17:01

My scans were private due to IVF.

LunasMom · 02/09/2015 17:12

Focus - not trying to be unpleasant. Good for you that you've 'all had the heartbeat' - I didn't until this past week HENCE my post asking people for their experiences. Several previous posters said that this is not unusual, and yes people said it was normal...what is your point? I did not keep prying for answers or information after people told me this...you did.

'no need for positive reinforcement beyond that' - I did not ask for positive reinforcement beyond that

Thank you for your replies Bells2307 and RooibosTeaAgain!

Bells - sounds like you have got some people taking great care of you..Congrats on your pregnancy and I wish all the best for you and baby!

Rooibos - Yes, it truly is amazing that they can detect and listen to a heartbeat when my baby was just 6mm long!

Congrats to all the other expectant mothers :)
