I bought very little new born and 0-1. Bought far too much 0-3 have like 30 baby grows not including vests and the rest. We bought far to much but dp 'couldn't resist' apparently. I some people don't buy to much as they say you will get loads of gifts etc but I would prefer to buy to much than rely on the idea of others giving us presents

DefinitelyNotElsa · 25/08/2015 15:56

I would definitely get a mixture, unless you have a clear indicator of size (e.g. Several growth scans - although even these can be wrong!).

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 25/08/2015 15:58

Just do not go mad washing all the newborn. None of my three fitted them, so went straight to 0-3

juniorbabybump123 · 25/08/2015 16:05

I know it sounds horrible but I don't have the money to waste on new born stuff if it wont fit would 0-3 be ok for like 6pound on wards

If you 'can't resist' an outfit then buy it in 12-18 months. Under 6 months is mainly going to be baby grows. 6-12 vest and leggings. I have wrestled the baby into jeans once and that was enough. I will buy him some when he can put them on himself!
People will buy you gifts in small sizes, my advice is to exchange them for bigger sizes where possible especially anything in 0-3.

DorotheaHomeAlone · 25/08/2015 16:08

Honestly, all of the sizes are different in different shops and babies are different sizes and different shapes. I'd buy and wash a few 0-3 months and buy a couple of newborn and keep the tags on.

My daughter was 6 pounds and newborn stuff was too big. We had to ask my mum to buy some tiny baby ones.

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 25/08/2015 16:28

It doesn't sound horrid. Get plain baby gros and any patterns you fancy in 0-3 then. It's mostly sleeves and legs that swamp tinies and you can roll up sleeves.

DorotheaHomeAlone · 25/08/2015 17:55

Should read 6lbs6

addictedtosugar · 25/08/2015 18:09

My 7lber needed to go straight into 0-3 as he was long (and skinny).
My 8lber stayed on newborn for about a month.

I'd buy 0-3, as you will use it. If you have a small baby, do a supermarket run for smaller stuff. It's not the end of the world.

noddingninja · 25/08/2015 18:19

I took 0-3 months clothes to hospital with me and they drowned DD despite her weighing 7lb 8oz and arriving nearly 2 weeks late. In the end we had to buy 'early baby' vests and babygros, which seemed a bit ridiculous

Lunastarfish · 25/08/2015 18:28

My dd was 7lb 11oz and 0-3 was far too big for her even though she was quite long. I found Primark Newborn (labelled as up to 7lb 5oz) were the best fit out of what I had bought. My dd is 6 weeks now and only just in 0-3 month.

As pp said, 0-3 will be used so buying that isn't a waste of money.

I'd suggest buying a few Newborn babygrows and vests. They don't have to be expensive supermarkets/primark sell Newborn very cheaply and people sell cheap bundles on eBay. also look in charity shops I bought 5 Newborn babygrows for 50p each.

Alternatively just buy 0-3 and if on the day they are far too big someone can(hopefully) pop to a supermarket to buy some clothes.

KLou1105 · 25/08/2015 19:01

Sorry id say no to 0-3 months for a 6lb baby, my dd was 5lb 1oz born (we new she was gonna be small but not that small) and I took newborn into hospital and they were massive! She wasn't in 0-3 until she was 4months old. I would recommend buying newborn upto 7lb 8oz or first size which is upto 9lb. you could ask your midwife if she thinks your likely to have big/small/average baby they're usually pretty good at guessing. I reckon if baby's over 81/2lbs would be ok in 0-3 months :)

mhayes12 · 25/08/2015 20:03

I would advise buying some not too expensive newborn sleepsuits - my heaviest baby was 8lb 6 oz and wore newborn clothes for the first 6 weeks or so. The 0-3 month clothes will more than likely be swimming on your baby when she is born and, depending on how much birth weight she loses, she nay well be in them for 4 months as Klou1105 mentions. I didn't receive any gifts of newborn clothes either. They were mainly 3-6 months with some 0-3 months.

Ilovenannyplum · 25/08/2015 20:14

My DS was 6lb 4, newborn swamped him and we had to go out and buy tiny baby stuff. 0-3 didn't fit him until he was maybe around 4 months. (He's still a tiny little thing now, just turned 1 and still in 6-9 clothes)

I think definitely buy a couple of small bits, the whole 0-3 seems a good idea in theory but doesn't always work out if you pop out a tiny one!

If money is a bit tight, check out your local Facebook selling groups, mine always has tons of baby clothes for good prices. Or stick a post on asking if anyone is selling any and you'll be swamped with replies

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 25/08/2015 21:29

God my kids were massive . The smallest was 8lb and straight in 0-3. 2/3 were into 3-6 months by about 8 weeks.

Tfoot75 · 26/08/2015 14:43

We bought a mixture of newborn and 0-3 and had both in hospital bag. DD was just under 8lb and 0-3 was fairly huge, newborn fitted nicely, but it didn't particularly matter that the clothes were too big. We got newborn sleepsuits reduced from supermarkets so didn't cost much if they weren't worn. You really only need a few days worth, not an entire wardrobe. As soon as baby arrives you will most likely be desperate to go on a trip to the shops anyway!

randomsabreuse · 26/08/2015 16:32

6.11 girl got 0-1 and newborn and was swamped in everything other than the Jojo MMan Bebe gift. Best fit is still tiny baby (Tesco as closest to hospital - had to send DH) but have had to unpick feet as the legs are way too short. Mothercare Newborn still huge - can bring legs up and get them stuck! Socks are total disaster - smallest size huge around legs so drop off with 1 kick!

MazzleDazzle · 26/08/2015 18:43

You hardly need any clothes for a newborn - vests and pjs and that's it.

Most people by far too much and they don't get worn at all.

After your baby is born, they pop on a nappy and wrap him/her in a blanket. The hospital is usually boiling. I bought a pack of 3 vests and a pack of 3 body suits. That was it!

notaprincessbutaqueen · 26/08/2015 18:49

more places now are doing an 'up to 1 month' size so a bit bigger then newborn but smaller then 0-3. id recommend buying that size.

notaprincessbutaqueen · 26/08/2015 18:52

and don't forget that unless your baby is born at 8.30pm on a sunday, then there is usually a 24hour supermarket nearby who will sell baby clothes if dp needs to make a sudden dash as baby is unexpectantly small/big x

randomsabreuse · 26/08/2015 20:54

Mine was born 2.30 on Sunday, by the time we were sorted the shops weren't open! I thought 0-1 month was a good compromise, vests are wearable is big - its just the sleep suits are probably the most awkward if substantially too big. Was properly caught out by little one being slimmer than expected.

carbolicsoaprocked · 26/08/2015 21:56

I had a long (52cm) 9lb baby, he wore first size/up to 1 month clothes for a few weeks as 0-3 seemed to drown him. He's 11 weeks now and growing out of 0-3 already though as he's still long. I would buy 0-1 (and 0-3 month as you'll use them later anyway) clothes and dash out if baby is unexpectedly small. Also buy/make woollen hats, I'd only bought the cotton ones and was told they wouldn't keep him warm enough. Good luck!

WiIdfire · 26/08/2015 22:05

We bought 2 newborn, and 3 x 0-1 month outfits. We had some 0-3 month hand-me-downs at home.

When the baby arrived at 11lb2, husband was sent home to do some frantic washing of the 0-3 month stuff, whilst the baby was shoe-horned into the 0-1 month outfit, poor little sausage.

He moved into 3-6 month clothes a couple of weeks ago at 4 weeks old. Blush

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 26/08/2015 22:07

Carbolic - where do you live that a cotton hat isn't warm enough in August Confused

JassyRadlett · 26/08/2015 22:07

I bought a pack of 3 vests and a pack of 3 body suits. That was it!

Speaking as someone who had a rather explosive baby, we needed quite a few more than that...
