I had very severe HG when pregnant with ds. Was sick the whole way through pregnancy. Hospitalised at 7 weeks and unable to get out of bed till 10 weeks. Vowed never to do it again. However broodiness is getting the better of me and I would like another baby. Dp is horrified at the thought of me going through another pregnancy like my first one. He thinks we would be unable to cope especially as we now have ds. Has anyone else had any experience of HG. If you had it in your first pregnancy did you have it in subsequent pregnancies and if so was it as bad?

Absolutely, Paddyclamp. My friends reckoned I was suffering from 'post-natal elation', I was so much happier once the baby was there

Have just skimmed thread, but I was one of those lucky people whose HG was not as bad second time round (2nd baby due any time now) - I actually had a pretty normal second trimester, which was heavenly.

I did find that medics were a lot more willing to take it seriously from the beginning the second time round, and I think that helped - had medication prescribed before I even started vomiting, as Blooming Awful advises. It was so horrendous the first time when they wouldn't listen and just said 'Oh, morning sickness is perfectly normal' - makes me so when serious problems in pregnancy are minimised like this.

Call me dumb-ass but...what is a morningwell cd?

Booboobedoo · 29/11/2006 16:40

Kathy: my BF is a doctor, and she said that when they were learning about pregnancy at medical school the 'side-effects' were barely touched on. It was basically implied that we should just shut-up and get on with it.

It's no wonder that sympathy is hard to find from the medical profession.

OTOH, I went to Kings College Hospital with mine and was prescribed anti-emetics with no problems at all.

Piffle · 29/11/2006 16:44

morningwell cd is a cd devised by clever folks and marketed by the nct
it plays certain musical sounds to help allay nausea and FWIW the few weeks I had nausea it did help a lot.

I found the first pregnancy bad as no-one took me seriously with regards the vommiting until I was at dropping point and couldn't think clearly or rationally.

Second time round (after 3 years because I didn't want to go through the sickness again) I got taken seriously and eventually got prescribed the mother of all anti-sickness drugs which worked a treat !

Did you get any medication in your first pregnancy ? Are you against taking medication to control the sickness ?

nannynickers · 29/11/2006 16:59

Piffle How amazing... Wonder how it works? But you'd reccomend it?

tutu I wasn't taken seriously either until the doctor saw I had lost 2 stone in 2 weeks, couldn't stand up straight and was going everywhere with a measuring jug because I was vomiting up to 200 times a day!

I was tried on 5 different anti emetics whilst I was in hospital before they put me on a syrup that they said was newly available it stopped me from actually throwing up but the nausea and spitting (disgusting) remained.

I the syrup was called Ondansetron I think... I have always wondered if it was responsible for DD being born full tern at 4lb 8oz??

I am not against taking drugs as long as it is considered safe to do so, I didn't take them unless I was having a really bad day just in case.

What were you prescribed?

nannynickers · 29/11/2006 17:00

sorry tutu I meant fatfeet

PeachysAreNotAChristmasFruit · 29/11/2006 18:05

Can't remember if I posted on this or not as there have been a few recently, but I used to volunteer as support eprson and info worker for the Blooming Awful cahrity mentioned below, if you want a chat or a sound off (or info) please feel free to CAt me or e-mail on peaches and cream04 at bt internet dot com.

Had HG (was on a drip) and went on to have a further two children, one with medication all through and one with no medication bar for one week.

It can be done

(RE morningwell, had loads of positive feedback for it via the group if that helps- worth a shot)

I lost a similar amount of weight and ended up with the same drugs as you but in tablet form.

I still felt a little nauseous and had the odd vomit (can totally relate to going every where with a piece of tupperware in case of sudden vomits) but I was able to look after my toddler mornings/evenings and weekends and work full time too. I came off the medication at about 24 weeks.

my baby was a healthy 9 pounder and arrived after the due date.

nannynickers · 30/11/2006 14:28

fatfeet Crikey Supermum! 9lbs is a good weight so there must be something else behind dd's low birth weight.

So would you consider another LO with HG or is your brood complete?

I can't believe you managed to work full time I had to take about 10 weeks off in all and ended up having my maternity pay docked because of it!

What age are you LO's? I would love for DD to have a playmate! She is the only baby in the family at the moment and none of my friends have LO's so I feel like she is missing out a bit.

I did have a week in hospital as even the second time around as it seems one has to be hospitalised to get past the GP and gain access to consultants willing to prescribe stronger drugs.

I also had a few additional complications which caused me to work short days for a couple of weeks to enable me to rest a bit. I agreed with my employer to take this as part annual leave and part sick time to share the burden and avoid eating into maternity leave.

I'm not a supermum and I did spend a lot of time resting whilst my dh got more involved with care of our toddler (about which he moaned prolifically) but sometimes only mummy will do !

PeachysAreNotAChristmasFruit · 30/11/2006 15:10

Sam had a fairly low birth weight- 5lb 5oz at full term. I did have blood pressure issues (pre eclampsia) but again have read that can be possibly linked to low protein intake early on....

fatfeet · 30/11/2006 15:13

I had a red-meat craving so I got loads of protein once I was able to hold food down

nannynickers · 30/11/2006 15:21

Of course you are a supermum fat feet I think all mums are! But coping with HG, work & LO must have been extra hard work, worth it in the end though!

You know what...the whole time I was sick I craved, Shandy, Fresh Cherry Juice & Sausage & Egg McMuffins! How Bizarre!

fatfeet · 30/11/2006 15:49

nannynickers

see, you had a protein craving too !

protein in sausage meat and eggs plus salt in junkfood to replace salt lost through vomitting.

are you new to mumsnet too ?

fatfeet · 30/11/2006 15:51

p.s. where on earth does one buy "fresh cherry juice" it sounds rather yummy

nannynickers · 30/11/2006 16:29

Yeah, I'm new and immediately obsessed!

nannynickers · 30/11/2006 16:38

Yes, fresh cherry juice is absolutely divine! I discovered it on holiday in Turkey and then Greece (when I was pregnant) they call it sour cherry juice for some reason, it is so thirst quenching and refreshing especially after I had just flooded our WHOLE appartment with stiffado sick! Unfortunately I cant find it anywhere here . I used to dream of big ice cold glasses of it with condensation turning into droplets on the side! MMmmmMMMmmmMMMMMmm!

PeachysAreNotAChristmasFruit · 30/11/2006 16:42

I craved ice in all my pregnancies 9there's a holistic theory that relates to calcium deficiency and I became lactose / casein intol in my HG pregnancy), with DS1 I craved mango andlater MacD's fries; ds3 I craved chinese leaf lettuce; ds3 I craved ice pole lollipops nd fresh fruit.

nannynickers · 30/11/2006 16:50

What things have lactose / casein in...if you get whajt I mean???

nannynickers · 30/11/2006 16:51

ICE POPS! How I wished I could eat an ice pop without throwing up! Haha!

PeachysAreNotAChristmasFruit · 30/11/2006 16:54

Lactose / casein is any dairy food. And the ivce pops, obv, were after the drip / hospitalization PG- that was pg1! I know what you mean abot keeping them down, trust me. I was rushed to hospital in a coma through lack of fluid. Actually my cat alerted my Dh lol .

macneil · 30/11/2006 16:59

Meat and ice pops were the only thing I didn't definitely throw up during the worst weeks. Now the sickness is almost as bad, none of my old tricks seem to work. I threw up a bunch of sorbet two days ago.

nannynickers · 30/11/2006 17:26

macneil - How long do you have left you poor thing?
