Whooping Cough vaccine - happy stories from people who had it at the beginning please!

Hi all,

I'm due my whooping cough vaccine today and I'm scared - not because of the needles or pain etc, but just because it's a relatively new vaccine for pregnant women and it can cause fever (which could cause future problems).

I've read all the studies on safety, so am aware that it is largely safe, but I'd LOVE to hear from some women who have now had their babies, as well as pregnant women, who can tell me what to expect afterwards.

Is fever common? Arm pain is fine, but what about the other symptoms like vomiting, diarrhoea, headaches etc?

Just a bit of hand-holding in advance please :) Thanks!

I felt a bit crap after - sort of like I was coming down with a bad cold for maybe 6 hours, but that may or may not have been related to the injection, I don't know. My arm really ached but was fine within a day. This was in 2013, am pregnant again and will be getting it as soon as it is offered this time! Would rather have a sore arm and reduce the risk of whooping cough in my newborn.

MrsAnxiety1 · 10/06/2015 17:19

OK, had the jab... Not sure what happened but it managed to bleed through the plaster (?!) and my dress. I'm a vaccine veteran but never had that happen!... Oh well, it's done now! ;)

I'm 33+6 and getting over yet another cold that DD brought home from daycare. I've still got a cough (so does she, it woke her up a couple of times last night). It SUCKS. I'm running to the bathroom even more often than I was already, and it's making it even harder to get comfortable and get to sleep than it was. I'm pretty sure it is not whooping cough, and that whooping cough would be a lot worse. I can't imagine how much that would suck. Just this cough sucks a lot worse than the redness, swelling, and itching I had from the whooping cough vaccine.

lentilpot · 10/06/2015 18:12

I had it and my ten month old is in my arms right now, he's very bonny and already walking!

I had pneumonia as a baby and bad whooping cough as a child so I decided the very real risk of my baby catching whooping cough and getting pneumonia was worse than the theoretical risk from the vaccine

Bluestockings35 · 10/06/2015 22:30

I had it yesterday and no side effects - arm wasn't even that sore, fine to sleep on, no swelling. I also bled through the plaster though, which was slightly weird but no harm done and it was a tiny plaster to be fair.

MissTwister · 10/06/2015 22:53

MrsAnxiety1 that happened to me when they took blood the other day - has never happened before, think its the 1 1/2 times the volume of blood we normally have!

geekymommy · 11/06/2015 00:09

I'm needle phobic, so any reaction I get to a shot or blood draw might be caused by me shaking a bit.

Scotinoz · 11/06/2015 04:16

I'm in Australia, and we get a whooping cough booster in the third trimester. It felt like I had a mossie bite for a few days, but that was the only side effect.

Luciferbox · 11/06/2015 07:33

I had it 3 weeks ago and had no ill effects at all.

LittlePeasMummy1 · 11/06/2015 09:38

Fever has been possibly linked to a raised risk of birth defects in some studies-this is not an issue for you as the baby's development takes place in the first trimester- well before the WC jab is give. Here is a leaflet, hope it is helpful.

rallytog1 · 11/06/2015 10:55

Had it with my dd who is now 2. No side effects for me or for her.

Skiptonlass · 11/06/2015 11:25

Definitely have it! :)

It's not a live vaccine, has a great safety profile and it's protecting you and your little one from what is frankly an awful bug.

I nearly died of whooping cough as a baby - and it's on the rise again because of the anti vaccine idiots.

This one's a no brainer, definitely take the jab :)

sianihedgehog · 11/06/2015 11:34

I had it at 28 weeks, didn't even have a bruise and was out dancing in the afternoon. :)

HelenF350 · 11/06/2015 11:35

I had it. Injection wasn't too sore and had no side effects other than a slightly bruised feeling in my arm for a day or two.

LostMySocks · 11/06/2015 20:37

I had it. No side effects. DS now energetic 20 month old. Glad I did. His midwife called in with whooping cough 5 hours after delivering him. He didn't get the bug. Who knows what could have happened.

WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 11/06/2015 20:40

Had it with DD, now 19 months. All fine. Just had it again as pregnant again (due in 4 weeks). Didn't even have the achey arm people mention.

Roseybee10 · 11/06/2015 20:42

Had it with dd2. She's now four months and neither of us suffered any ill effects x

AmberLav · 12/06/2015 11:31

Had it with DD who is now 25 months old - don't remember any side effects... Will be having it again in about 15 weeks time...

ceebelle83 · 12/06/2015 12:41

Had it yesterday. My arm feels a but dead but no swelling or bruising and I barely felt the jag.

dottiemad · 12/06/2015 13:11

Is no one concerned about long term affects this drug has on our LOs? I'm a little worried as there were no clinical trails on these for pregnant women just what they have observed since giving it the past couple of years. I don't think this is long enough to determine long term effects. Its not so much the actual vaccine that I have an issue with its the aluminium content (2 x the recommended dose for adults...and thats fluid into digestive system not blood stream as no studies have been conducted again)

WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 12/06/2015 13:19

I'm more concerned about the effect whooping cough would have on a newborn, e.g potential death.

MrsAnxiety1 · 12/06/2015 14:10

Dottiemad I was very concerned about the long-term effects, but was also more concerned that whooping cough is making a come-back and I didn't want my DC to die from something I could have prevented.

Where did you get you info on aluminium amounts? There are very accurate ingredient lists on the Oxford Vaccine Group's website, with totally impartial information.

It's all a risks vs benefits thing, like all the decisions we make during pregnancy and in our everyday lives. For instance, I avoid bisphenol-A and pthalates - and I have done so for years, long before I was pg. After all, life is a game of risks.

For those interested, apart from a large bruise and soreness, my arm was fine and as yet no temperature or any other side-effects almost 48 hrs later Smile

I did have quite a reaction from the vaccine - it was 2 weeks ago and I still have a huge bruise! My arm was hot and sore for a good week before settling down to just a bruise. I also had a headache and sore throat within a few hours of the jab which lasted about 3 days.

However, I would still have it again as I worry about the risk of a baby getting whopping cough.

guinnessgirl · 13/06/2015 14:09

I had it at 30wks. Only side effect was a bit of a sore arm for a day or so. Now 39 weeks Smile

guinnessgirl · 13/06/2015 14:12

Also glad of it as I actually came into contact with someone who was recovering from whooping cough shortly afterwards!
