I will have two under two - double buggy?

Found out 6 hours ago i'm pregnant with my second - really pleased though it wasn't so much planned as it was having a babysitter and two bottles of wine Blush.

Anyway,by my calculations my due date is mid december,my first will turn two at the start of January. Would you bother to get a double buggy or use the one we have for the new baby and get a stroller for the eldest? DH works shifts so my thinking is I won't necessarily have anyone to help push two prams but it seems a big expense when my eldest will hopefully be walking ok fairly soon after.

I know out of all the things to be focusing on this is well down the list but now it's in my head i'm obsessing over it! Trying to be practical I suppose

19 month gap here and managed fine with sling and single buggy. We aren't heavy buggy users though and my elder child is a good walker.

meglet · 21/04/2015 19:46

double. takes the load off of you and it can carry more clutter and shopping. used mine until just before my eldest started school.

SantanaBinLorry · 21/04/2015 19:46

umberella buggy & board. And I swear by my phil & teds. Managed to get a decent one secondhand and cheap, but would have been happy if i'd paid full price. Its certainly earned its keep :) My 7 and 4 year old still jump in it now for long walks. We dont have a car, a bit of a pain to fold, but we didnt have to...
Found it much easier on buses, around shops etc than when i used a side by side.
Congrats btw :)

I have the same gap and used a double buggy for about 4 months before switching to a single and buggy board. Was most useful for days out when dd wanted to nap/sit down. Can you borrow one? Or second hand? We got our p+t sport double for £100 with accessories.

Mummybear1984 · 21/04/2015 19:51

I'm the same- going to have a 21 month old and new born.
I'm going to get a double as I use my pram a lot and not really a sling fan.

Question now is to which one!!!

Congratulations! I'm also due December- 20th I think.

Trapper · 21/04/2015 19:54

Ours are 12 months apart and we don't have a car (London). We bought a Phil and Ted off ebay. I would recommend this approach as you save a fortune and get all the accessories too!
They are 3 and 4 now and we still use it occasionally if we are planning on being out for a full day with lots of walking.
If you are mainly drive then you could probably get away with a buggy board. But that would depend on the child and your patience Grin

I have same gap and younger has a late November birthday. Since it was the winter when I would maybe have used a double buggy I didn't bother. Did use the car a bit more / walked a bit less than I otherwise would have. Also factor in double buggies are quite heavy and cumbersome especially when one occupant is 2. Very much depends on individual circumstances though.

Ratfinkandbobo · 21/04/2015 19:59

Definitely, I had a maclaren, you can also get loads of bags on it without tippingSmile

tilder · 21/04/2015 19:59

Would definitely get a double. At just turned 2 mine were all still sleeping in the day and a double buggy was essential for a trip of more than a mile or one lasting more than an hour. Or if I needed to get somewhere quickly!

seastargirl · 21/04/2015 20:04

16 month age gap here and I got the baby jogger city select, it's great as can be used as a single or double. There are loads of different ways you can set it up and you can even put the car seat on it. It is a bit heavy to steer with both children in, but on the whole it's an amazing pram.

Mouthfulofquiz · 21/04/2015 20:05

I had a 20 month age gap and didn't need one because my eldest was a really good walker. So I just got a little life backpack for the eldest and put the youngest in the pram.

As the moment we walk a lot, especially at weekends,as in walk up the street not long walks in the country. We live in a small town and both have cars but if we go shopping in the nearest big town I wouldnt really feel happy with a buggy boards. Dont know why but I always feel nervous when I see kids on them!

Dont get on with slings,my boobs as far to big!

18 months between my two sons. We got the out and about nipper 360 and it's a dream! I use it all the time, it's really light, it's so smooth to push, can easily push with one hand. It's a side by side, which I like because I wouldn't like one to be on top of the other! Id really recommend it to others!!

2LittleFishes · 21/04/2015 20:08

17 months gap here so smaller than u, but oldest is now 2.5 and we still use it occasionally. I don't drive thought so probably wouldn't get as much use if I didn't have to get busses ect.

Definitely recommend going for second hand though as you should need it for long of your oldest is a good walker.

NoodieRoodie · 21/04/2015 20:08

We walk everywhere as DH has the car for work and I managed with single, buggy board and sling. DD was born 2 weeks before DS turned 2 and in the last months of pregnancy I did plenty of walking practise!! Currently pregnant again and there will be 22 months between DD and this one and am planning on doing the same again. I also live up a very steep hill so this was a major factor in my decision!!

Just remember you will still be able to buy a double after baby arrives, so maybe see how you get on first.

DeathMetalMum · 21/04/2015 20:14

Double definitely. We had a 2.1 year gap the double was the best thing I bought. Last thing I wanted to worry about is a toddler running off or refusing to walk etc when we had 5 minutes to get to an appointment. Saved my sanity, I knew they were both safe and I could enjoy walking down the road - often one of the least stressful times of day.

I did however only use the double for 6 months then switched to a buggy board, dd1 was brilliant at walking by then, the double was a pain on the bus and took up so much space. If you do get one treat it as a rental more if you can they hold their value quite well.

Mouthfulofquiz · 21/04/2015 20:16

What about that buggy with the toddler seat at the back (for when your smallest one is a bit bigger?) it is forward facing though which isn't great for small babies but I love the idea of the fact it is still the same width as a single... I think it's called a Joovy Caboose.

Xmasbaby11 · 21/04/2015 20:16

Congrats! I'd definitely get double. So much easier. I had 2 year age gap and used it every day for a year until dd1 was 3. She was a good walker but ran off all the time. We switched to buggy board plus single when they were 1 and 3.

Juliecloud · 21/04/2015 20:20

I have the same age gap and would definitely recommend a double buggy. I used it up until my eldest was 4. We walk everywhere though, frequently over 30 minutes to get places (at my pace, it would take too long at toddler pace).
I also have the baby jogger select and it is the best buggy ever.

Popalina · 21/04/2015 20:24

I do lots of walking and started off with a sling/ buggy board with single but after four months I opted for double and it has been invaluable! I guess if we didn't do a lot of walking then prob could have got by but it was too much to expect dc1 to buggy board for too long and dc2 Got a bit heavy in the sling and wasn't keen on it.

I got my buggy second hand on eBay and kept my single in the car so I don't have to fuss with transferring the double into the car when needed.

Mummybear1984 · 21/04/2015 20:24

For people that have the baby jogger double, does it have a carrycot?

gaahhnonicknamesleft · 21/04/2015 20:25

Get a double but get it second-hand.

20 month gap here and it was very useful for when both were sleeping or when I needed to tie ds1 down. But it was for a relatively short time. I preferred ds1 walking with a rucksack lead around my wrist while I pushed the single buggy. We still used the double for long walks until ds1 was about 3. Congrats. Don't buy it just yet though!

MagicAlwaysLeadsToTrouble · 21/04/2015 20:27

Definitely get a double!

20 months gap here and although I used a single plus a sling while baby was small I used a double for almost a year after that!

Get one second hand and sell on when you are done!
