How many muslin cloths do i really need?

I have bought 9 muslin cloths. Is this enough? Or should I buy some more? I'm a bit of a loser and love laundry.

What's the general consensus?

Probably enough, you'll be washing frequently anyway so can throw them in every wash...

Depends how sicky baby is and how often you wash them. They do dry incredibly quickly though which helps.

I would say 9 is a good start, you'll know within a week or so if you need more. DD was a sicky baby and I think we ended up with 15.

Also, despite being used to wipe up sick, they are worth spending money on. Cheap ones end up totally threadbare very quickly!

I think we had about 20!

We used them for all sorts. There were always a couple in the changing bag and we seemed to end up with a couple in each car for mid journey emergencies......

The more the merrier!

9 is a good start. I found it useful to have different colours and patterns too, in a sort of "purple one's been socked on, spotty one's been on the floor" kind of way.

Yeah, that's enough I think. My tip would be to get some really massive ones. We got some from Boden as a present and they are really useful- cover a big area in case of huge vomits, you can use them as a light blanket or a sunscreen.

Thanks! I have a mixture of colour/white and a couple are huge so I seem to have thr right mix

The more the better! We have about 20 which I thought might be too many but actually isn't. Having plenty means you can have them lying around in each room so there's always one at hand, as well as in your changing bag etc. Also place them under the baby's head in their cot / moses basket / pram in case they spit up - saves you washing the entire bed linen. I also clip a pretty patterned one onto the pram with little pegs so DD doesn't wake up as easily when we're out in town.

I never used with my previous 2. Bought a pack of 5 this time around to give them a try. May invest in more as they seem big enough to cover while breastfeeding If need too

I bought a pack of 10 and someone bought me a pack of 3 and I didn't use them.

I have used them since to clean my windows,paintwork and other house worky things though!

Depends on the baby. I bought loads based on MN recommendations, and never needed them. One was used, as sun shade for buggy.

I got a mixture of terry nappies and muslins, terry nappies were more useful as they soaked up more, useful for the sorts of volumes my dds specialised in!

Ten years on and mine are still going strong...you can never have too many. Now get used for all sorts.

About four million if our experience is anything to go by...

I'd wait though as we got a some packs as new baby gifts from various people.

We've got about 16 which has been about right for us. I tend to have 4-5 round the house at any time (lounge, play room, nursery, our bedroom, changing bag).got a mix of nice big ones from aden and anais and some cheap aldi ones.

None, never used them, never really understood the hype tbh and DS was a relux baby, I just used bibs if needed to wipe up stuff.

Dd3 is now 3 and I still have a lovely neat freshly laundered pile of pink, yellow and white ones in my airing cupboard. I think I need to part with them! I used them for everything with my babies though-in changing bags to use for bibs, covering up if you want to whilst feeding, draping over the pram on a sunny day, using as an emergency change mat.

I'm considering buying some more and my children are now 11 and 8. We used them for all sorts of things - newborn nappies, sick-wipers, bibs, swaddling, change mat, sheet, a couple got transformed into comfort blankie type things, now they are used as tea towels, to wrap bread in, on picnics, dusters ...

Very useful if you have a sicky baby, which we did. We also had 'graded' muslins, they'd start with being cleaning baby up ones, and then progress to 'floor muslins' - ie wiping baby sick off the floor, before being washed. As baby grew up, they progressed to being general house cleaning/mopping up cloths. They probably had the most use/longest lasting use of any baby thing we bought.

We started with 9, then bought another pack of 3 I think.

Always 1 more than you have!

Ds2 is now 16mo and I use one after each food fight meal to clean him down rather than use 27 wipes (he is adamant he can feed himself now )
