Sick of not being able to find maternity wear IN STORE

Hoping some bright spark can point me in the right direction....either I'm being incredibly divvy or there is a distinct lack of maternity wear stocked in high street stores at the moment.

When I was pg with my ds a few years ago I never had any issues, I could happily shop in M&S, Matalan, New Look, H&M & Next amongst other stores and I could try items on to my hearts content.

I'm now pg again and am not really a standard size/shape iyswim? I cant seem to find any stores locally who actually stock Maternity, they all seem to say its online only. Normally fine but I need to try on as they rarely fit (I've just spent over £100 on bits from Red Herring maternity and not one item fitted me Sad )

So far Ive tried, Asda, Matalan, Next, New Look, TK Maxx, Marks and Spencer, Tesco, Primark, Dorothy Perkins...and lots more. Im a 16-18Uk depending on which shop.

So where do you lovely ladies find you can buy items (other than mothercare) in store? TIA

H&M and New Look both had maternity wear, in our local ones anyway. Apart from that I've bought everything from ASOS.

D0nnaO · 10/04/2015 21:31

I had the same problem! Ended up having to buy the majority online. although I did get some bits from a larger New Look store

Whatabout · 10/04/2015 21:36

H&m have a few bits, but otherwise online everywhere pretty much. Mithercare and m&p have some but pretty rubbish and limited. It is really stupid.

youlemming · 10/04/2015 21:37

it definetly has reduced from when I had DD1 5 yrs ago, there must have been 3-4 places locally I could go, now I think it's down to just New Look (other than Mothercare which I find quite expense in comparision) but it's not a huge range and as with you I'm a 16/18 and not all the styles suit my shape.

I also find online shopping frustrating and would prefer to try on in store.

SnookyWookyWooWoo · 10/04/2015 21:43

Ah well at least I'm not alone, its so bloody frustrating, makes me think what the hell do they expect us to wear? maybe should go back to the days of wearing dh's shirts/jumpers e.t.c.

Tried asos but very little in my size last time I checked - and Asda do a lovely range and very very reasonably priced but same issue - always out of stock in my size online

I might have to get myself down to the biggest shopping mall I can find (Lakeside perhaps) and see what I can find panic buy

Thanks ladies

...oh and yes Whatabou....Mothercare pricing is an absolute joke when you look at the quality of the garments, some of the fabric is awful!

Tori have you been to Matalan recently? I went last weekend but was told its not in stock anymore and online only?

Also have had Peacocks mentioned to me by my sil trying there tomorrow hopefully.

I'm determined I'll find something (it really takes the p that you cant find stuff in the shops anymore)..incredibly unfair

Peacocks, larger new look stores and red herring maternity in debenhams were the only place I found had maternity clothes in store. Some asda superstores have maternity range in store too. Mothercare obviously have it in store but I found the stuff very plain, dated and 'mumsy' nothing at all with any style to it, I also found it to be very very big not catering for those of us with a smaller neater bump everything was like a tent. Top tip - if you order from Dorothy perkins maternity range you can't return it to a shop if you don't like it it needs to be posted back.

MissTwister · 10/04/2015 22:16

I buy it all online and send 90% back. Very tiring and I only have about 4 outfits at the moment.. .

TheTravellingLemon · 10/04/2015 22:18

I was just moaning about this exact thing this morning. I managed to find a new look in the end, but after a lot of searching. Next no longer stock it in any if their shops at all.

seriouslynonames · 10/04/2015 22:26

Have also been frustrated the last couple of weeks as last pregnancy was 5 yrs ago when you could buy in store and this time nothing in store! Have just sent back the whole package of stuff I ordered from vertbaudet. Back to square one! Work wear is the trickiest - who'd have thought it would be so hard to get work maternity trousers!! any suggestions....? X

thatsn0tmyname · 10/04/2015 22:33

I treated myself to a couple of wrap tops from Jojo and lived in maternity jeans from Red Herring. I wore non maternity cardigans as it was summer and could leave them open and accessorised with scarves etc. A couple of basic maternity vests and t shirts from Matalan helped.

Chocolateorangegirl · 10/04/2015 22:34

Not sure I bought any maternity wear in store! It all was bought online. Had my baby a year ago- please do give ASOS maternity & gap a try (though the latter is expensive). I'm your size and found lots of lovely clothes from those places. Work trouser wise it was Next all the way.

Crumbelina · 10/04/2015 22:37

It's sooo rubbish! I went to Oxford Street a few weeks ago thinking I'd be spoilt for choice. All I could find was a maternity section in Topshop so I bought everything from there. Lovely maternity jeans. Smile

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 10/04/2015 22:39

John Lewis in Bluewater had a new in store section today. It was all naice brands though so possibly pricey.

youlemming · 10/04/2015 22:39

I've found New look to be the best for work trousers I'm not too big yet as just about to hit 24 wks but my usual stuff was getting tight. The trousers I got can be adjusted using buttons on the sides so I can let out gradually and they were only £20.
I'm pretty much wearing them for work then one pair of jeans at home which are a size up from what I normally wear (non maternity) a bit baggy but comfortable for now.

SnookyWookyWooWoo · 10/04/2015 23:18

Cannot believe there are so many of us poor preggo ladies who are suffering....it sucks.

Like I said last time (3 years ago) there wasn't loads but enough to get me by.

Thanks for the Gap suggestion chocolate my dh suggested this to me but I thought their sizing was S/M/L which never seems to fit me so Ive usually avoided...I'm going to try that now for sure. Might also try vertbaudet and Jo Jo but they're so bloody pricey.

I'm going to have another good go and report back ladies its doing my skull in. I'm not desperate yet as not got a huge bump but want to get sorted before I turn into a whale lol. At the mo Im managing with baggy tops but trousers are getting slightly uncomfortable so its leggings all the way.

Don't want to go down the online route again just yet as i never get the sizing right.

Appreciate all the recommendations and I'll be sure not to make the mistake of ordering from Dorothy Perks online thanks fr the heads up!!

Some next have maternity in store I was told Maidstone do and in Manchester arndale.
Crumbelina am gutted oxford street is rubbish, have a shopping trip planned there next week.
I have been given some by friend and seen a few bits in jojomamabebe.... But at a loss on work wear

SewSlapdash · 11/04/2015 07:04

When I was pg (nearly 2 years ago now) it was almost all online only. My local Debenhams had some stuff, as did H&M and JoJo Maman Bebe (do NOT buy a wrap top, you will spend your entire pregnancy adjusting it).

If you're making a special trip eg to lakeside, I would call ahead to check whether the stores actually have the stuff in stock; I made a special trip to Oxford St only to come away empty handed.

AnythingNotEverything · 11/04/2015 07:13

I've had the most success on eBay. At least stuff seems to be cheap (except Isabella Oliver, but that stuff seems worth it).

OP I'm a 16 and Gap L maternity is good for me.

Good luck Smile

SophyStantonLacy · 11/04/2015 07:46

Agreed OP! Very annoying. At the Trafford Centre only H&M and Debenhams and Mamas & Papas stock any maternity wear in store.

Ilovenannyplum · 11/04/2015 07:56

@snooky
If you mean Essex Lakeside, it was rubbish for maternity. The only place I found anything was the mothercare and the next outlet in the retail park

Good luck, I don't miss this at all Confused

SmileyScooby · 11/04/2015 08:55

I've had the same problem and spent over two hours walking around shops when was 23w trying to find some clothes for work and came away with one top from Debenhams! although h&m and new look had some stuff it was suiting my tastes/size and Debenhams only had a tiny section. I have bought pretty much all my clothes online from Asda as can easily return to store (bought normal size and size up etc) and for lounging around at home men's xl tshirts, jogging bottoms and hoodies (again asda!)
