Will you be washing all babies new things before using them? clothes/blankets etc?

Stillyummy · 08/04/2015 21:47

Yes. In non-bio and using fabric softener.

3rdbump · 08/04/2015 21:51

am planning on washing babies things, not sure when though.
How many weeks do you think? don't want to leave it too late
am 33 weeks at present :)

I lovingly washed everything and then DS was unexpectedly premature and tiny (I'd been told to expect a big baby!) so when people brought us the tiny clothes to the hospital he wore them without them being washed and it was fine

applecore0317 · 08/04/2015 21:54

I'm 33 weeks and have done all mine, did the last few bits today. Mainly as am at risk of her coming early, but also to get it done :)

youlemming · 08/04/2015 22:07

I did with the bits I brought before my first was born but then everything others brought as gifts after we had baby were just used as didn't have the time or energy to wash what wasn't obsolutley necessary.

This time around a lot of the stuff we are using again so it will need a quick wash as it's been bagged up in the loft.

MuddyWellyNelly · 08/04/2015 22:21

I will. We have a mix of new stuff, eBay purchases, and cast me downs. Will particularly wash the newborn stuff, but need to leave it as late as possible as the cats love to lie on the laundry, and I haven't found space for tiny clothes yet!!

avocadotoast · 08/04/2015 22:50

I thought about packing my hospital bag today and then realised I needed to wash the baby stuff before I pack it. So yep, I'm doing mine over the next couple of days (I'm 34 weeks). Figured I might as well do everything! I have a couple of hand knitted things I've made that definitely need a wash, some of the wool I've had a long time...

Fattycow · 08/04/2015 23:13

Yes. I wash everything. Shops are often treated with chemicals to keep them from creasing and to protect against mould during transport and storing. I do not want that on my baby.

Maz431 · 08/04/2015 23:47

I bought loads of stuff for Dc1 in first size which was upto 7lb in weight, and washed it all. Only problem was Dc1 was over 9lb so it was all too small Confused

comeagainforbigfudge · 09/04/2015 02:04

I will. We've been given a lot of hand me downs which have been in a case/bag for over a year before being given to us so will wash that.

*must remember to get more non-bio washing powder!

MistressMerryWeather · 09/04/2015 02:13

Nope, I never did. Two babies and they were fine!

Just remember however, that non bio means non bio. Fairy cost me a fortune with DS1.

NickyEds · 09/04/2015 09:20

With ds I washed and ironed everything, including ironing scratch mits.
This time I'll try and wash everything but there's no way anything will be ironed!

HazleNutt · 09/04/2015 09:24

Yes. But as also said above, don't wash everything, you never know how big the baby is or how fast he grows - mine was out of his newborn and even 0-3 clothes in about 2 seconds, so never got to wear most of them. If I hadn't washed and removed the labels, could have returned.

sianihedgehog · 09/04/2015 15:35

Absolutely. I have to do this with my own clothes, and my other half's, as we have sensitive skin and eczema. As someone else said, new clothing is often treated with various things to deter pests, repel stains, and prevent creasing, and this stuff can irritate sensitive skin.

yummymango · 10/04/2015 14:48

I washed everything when my maternity leave started. It was lovely to see all those tiny weenie clothes hung out on the line :)
I didn't keep that up however, and anything new after she was born wasn't usually washed before she wore it. I did use fairy non-bio (which is rubbish at removing baby poo and other stains from clothes).

Xo90 · 10/04/2015 15:12

No I won't be. Only the things I've been given second hand. I will wash the towels though, it makes them more absorbent. But new clothes will go on without being washed first.

Number3cometome · 10/04/2015 15:13

no

Thurlow · 10/04/2015 15:15

I'm sure this is one of those 'only on MN' things.

But then I don't know anyone who washes their own clothes before wearing them either.

RL20 · 10/04/2015 15:18

No I won't be, although my mum kindly washed clothes that were given to us for baby, second hand. Which I would have anyway, but as she has a garden, (and we live in a flat), she was able to put them out on the line to dry etc.
However, you have reminded me that I need to get some sort of non-bio powder, so thank you!

JustAQuicky · 10/04/2015 15:47

Definitely not Confused won't be buying no-bio either clothes get chucked in together end of

Roseybee10 · 10/04/2015 16:24

I did with hand me downs or stuff that had been saved from dd1 but not new stuff.

2015isgoingtobeBIG · 10/04/2015 16:57

So the nhs website says don't use fabric conditioner
www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/what-you-need-for-baby.aspx
But I've read elsewhere to definitely use it.
Any thoughts? I have excema but am fine using conditioner but don't know whether the fact I have sensitive skin means my children are more likely to be sensitive when born.

JustAQuicky · 10/04/2015 16:58

2015

I use comfort jojoba, persil colour and vanish on everyone's clothes. The only thing I won't use is Daz as it makes me heave

RL20 · 10/04/2015 17:00

2015 that's strange, didn't know that one.
I also suffer with eczema (more so when I was younger) but am ok with washing powders on clothes.
I suppose only time can tell, after all it's not really like eczema can be prevented, only eased I supposed

strawberry01 · 10/04/2015 17:11

I washed any 2nd hand items only.
