Just want to know out of curiosity really. I have my 20 week scan tomorrow and hubby and I have decided not to find out whether it's a boy or a girl but I seem to be in a minority of people I know who are either having babies or have recently had babies and all found out. For me it's more important tomorrow to see that everything is ok with baby not to know the sex of the baby (if that's the right term??).

Oh bollocks does it make you push harder. FFS. What do you say to women who had to have c sections? "Oh, it must have been because you knew the sex, what a shame, if only you hadn't known you could have delivered vaginally"? Hmm

Funnily enough when my baby and I were in distress and being carted into theatre the sex - which I didn't know - was the very furthest thing from my mind. What the fuck was going on with my heart and why my baby was stuck occupied a hell of a lot more brainspace.

I didn't find out and it was the most amazing surprise ever when the midwife held up DS and announced "it's a boy". I'll treasure that moment forever.

shitebag-

oh dear I dont think this was the same couple at all!

Do you think that the couple who threatened to sue have sort of ruined it for other couples going to your hospital who want to find out? we are lucky enough to live an an area where the maternity hospital does tell you the sex if you want to know, but now your local hospital has changed their policy based on what sounds like, one couple's threat. So the chance to know for free has been taken away from couples in the area?

I guess it has in a way, lots of people still choose to pay to find out here despite it costing a fair chunk of money so I suppose its important to those people and the option to find out for free would be beneficial.

At the same time though I imagine it does put stress onto the Sonographers if they're asked to determine the sex as regardless of how many times they say they can rarely be 100% there are people who will run out and buy gender specific stuff then complain if they'd wasted their money.

There's also the argument that the primary function of a scan is to ensure the foetus is developing properly yet some (not all!) people completely ignore this and jump straight to the sex question (again info from midwife friend) which does actually make me question why the NHS provides it as an option when in most cases its of no relevance to the health of anyone.

We didn't find out first time and we won't this time. Life has few surprises these days. Finding out the sex is part of the miracle of childbirth. And it makes it much more exciting for other people as well when they don't know. I think it's like knowing what you're getting for xmas before you open it.
