What is on your to buy list for baby to sleep in?

DH is keen to make a list of what we will need to buy over the coming months in preparation for the new arrival. We are way off buying anything as I am only 10 weeks but DH just wants to make a list so that we can set a budget and have some ideas of what we will be buying.
We had a Moses basket with our older two children but neither stayed in them for more than 8 weeks as both babies were quite big and they were not comfortable in the basket. DH mentioned getting a Moses basket (we haven't kept anything so are starting from scratch) but I think we should go for a space saver cot in our room and then a cot bed in the nursery. We plan to have a carrycot for the pram which should suffice for daytime naps in the early weeks.
What is everyone else doing for sleeping arrangements in the first six months?

We just bought a cot bed. Put next to bed in our room. You can take one side off also if you want to.

Saves buying bedside crib then cotbed as well.

Superexcited · 24/03/2015 07:09

I would love to just buy a cot bed but it wouldn't fit comfortably in our bedroom so we need to get a cot bed for the nursery and something smaller but suitable for at least 6 months in our room. I think we have (I have) decided on a space saver cot for our room.

Your midwife is likely to be very anti co sleeping and Poddle pods/sleepyheads. Their advice is baby flat on it's back, which you can't do with these customised pillows . . . I hid mine when midwife was visiting Wink

Teeste · 24/03/2015 17:46

flipflump - you were right! Just been to see her this afternoon and it was a big fat NOPE from her. Not to the Sleepyhead, just bed-sharing in general. Hey ho...

Carrierpenguin · 24/03/2015 17:55

I need to.get a co sleeper cot as dc1 ended up co-sleeping but I don't have a cot. Would rather have one that lasts 1 year + though as I like to cosleeper and bf for a long time (2 years last time). Amy recommendations?

I love gro bags too!

Stace27 · 24/03/2015 18:23

I'm also on my 3rd and like yourself both my oldest 2 were too big for there Moses basket at 7 weeks.
I'm going for a Chicco Next 2 Me this time. There a lot bigger than a Moses basket and can also drop the side for attaching to your bed! They look fab and have got really good reviews :-) x

Roseotto · 24/03/2015 20:12

I'm thinking about hiring a bednest - have always had a moses basket and a crib for my older children but really fancy the bedside aspect as I will be breastfeeding.

shitebag · 24/03/2015 20:20

The cheap ikea cot is similar sized to a space saver and can be built minus one side and attached to bed frame using cable ties or something to turn it into a co-sleeper.

Superexcited · 24/03/2015 20:57

I had a look at the ikea cheapie, it was quite a bit bigger than kiddicares space saver which I think is only 90cm long.

Gingerbread - we have a metal frame bed, so the frame sits slightly further out than the mattress. The alternatives (we looked at snuzpod and bednest) have solid sides/frame whereas the chicco has legs/feet so they can tuck in underneath and the crib part can be pushed up again our mattress. That's the theory anyway, may not make sense with my explanation! It seemed the most flexible in terms of set up.

gingerbreadmam · 25/03/2015 09:30

thanks lovely just the info i needed. i really want the sleepyhead but the sleepy head and a next2me and then a propa cotbed just seems like a waste.

i will find this out eventually i guess but generally how old are babies when they can roll over? i guess the ikea space saver with side down and sleepyhead inside would be safe while baby cant move?

Artandco · 25/03/2015 12:58

Ginger ds1 was rolling by 12 weeks, ds2 about 5 months

Artandco · 25/03/2015 13:00

I don't think you need a sleepyhead and a cot tbh. Like I said you could potentially have a baby rolling by 3 months so it would be unsafe and expensive. The cot with side off is fine to use alone

gingerbreadmam · 25/03/2015 13:06

oh 3 months is earlier than i thought tbh. i looked at the ikea space saver cots but theyre not massively cheaper than the next2me by time you have bought matress etc.

i think ill stick with next2me and if i get a good collection from work i could drop hints about the sleepyhead, i was thinking more to use downstairs / at parents rather than a moses basket.

Artandco · 25/03/2015 13:11

Gingerbread - can you fit a regular cotbed next to your bed? That will then last 0-5/6 years.

Then take a look at the Phil and teds nest. It's larger than a Moses basket, but folds for travel and has storage for other baby stuff so handy if travelling. Mine fitting in until 8/9 months old. You could use this downstairs plus at parents

Remember baby can also nap in pram in the day, on folded blanket next to you or simply on you, so I wouldn't feel you need to buy stuff that won't last long

Superexcited · 25/03/2015 14:07

The cheap ikea cot is not a space saver, the dimensions are exactly the same as all the other ikea cots (120x60cm). I think it just looks smaller because it is a bit flimsy looking compared to others. Kiddicare and a few other places do proper space saver cots which are 90x50 cm but I don't think any have a removable side so the Chicco next to me is a better option if you want to remove the side.

I intend to co-sleep but for day time naps we have an Amby nest they are fairly big so can last Baby 6 months plus unless the start rolling or pulling themselves up.

gingerbreadmam · 25/03/2015 15:27

thanks for all the advice. at the moment i dont know about bedroom space as were in a cramped one bed flat so need to move before baby. i think cotbed is probs the best idea rather than wasting lots of money if we have the space.

didnt know phil and ted did stuff like that so will take a look. i am hoping to get a pram with a carrycot and makes sense baby can sleep in there but are they really comfy / safe? (i know i may sound stupid but it is my first) also whilst on the subject of carry cots / prams does the carrycot bit be the pram if that makes sense?

someone on here really rated the baby jogger mini which ive looked at and you can get a deluxe carrycot for that just wondered if that would be my 'pram' so to speak?

Madamecastafiore · 25/03/2015 15:28

I'd just get one cot and a sleepyhead if I were you. 2 cots is pointless.

Artandco · 25/03/2015 16:04

Gingerbread - they can sleep in any style pram as long as it lies flat. Ie with the baby jogger they can sleep either in main part laid flat or in additional carrycot. If you need to fold pram often don't get carrycot. The babyzen yoyo 0+ is a great small folding pram suitable from newborn. They only say suitable for overnight sleeping if exact mattress/ height regulations. In the day it doesn't matter as you will be keeping an eye on them.

gingerbreadmam · 25/03/2015 16:38

i did think that madame

ooh will have a look at that pram thanks for the suggestion! dont think will need much folding live in a small town so dont plan on using car much during maternity but i am open to ideas on prams so will certainly look at the zen. thank you Thanks

boatrace30 · 25/03/2015 19:34

I have just bought a next2me. Really pleased with it. Looks like it will last far longer than a normal crib too, which makes it seem better value. Great to travel with and won't take up much space when we store it ready for DC2!

avocadotoast · 25/03/2015 21:41

We managed to score a Babybay bedside crib on eBay, I was so pleased. I'd pretty much given up on getting a bedside crib as I thought we couldn't justify the cost, but we got it for £68 and it's in perfect condition. We just need to get a new mattress for it.

We are planning to get a Sleepyhead as well though. I've only heard good things about them Smile

Superexcited · 26/03/2015 07:03

2 cots is pointless.

Unless you can't fit a full size cot in your bedroom. The other options that will fit (space saver cot, crib, next to me etc) will only last a max of 6 months so in that case more than one cot might be required. A space saver cot is about a third of the price of the sleepyhead, so buying one of those and a cot bed for the nursery isn't really pointless.

gingerbreadmam · 26/03/2015 08:10

yes guess we'll have to decide when we know where were living, if we can do without a bedside cot i would rather but as people have said depending on space might be essential.

i am trying not to get into all the fads and stuff but the reviews of the sleepyhead are just so good that i might have to allow myself to buy one faddy thing lol!
