Booking in date for c-section

Hi ladies,

When was the earliest your consultant booked you in for a CS?

CS is my only option, seen the anaesthetist and this will be done under a GA.

I have an appointment to see my consultant in 1.5 weeks and would like to book the date for my CS (consultant has already said 38 weeks)

I will be 24 weeks at the next appointment.

Can't see the point of waiting until later on to book a date if the decision has been made?

Hi OP. I was booked in at around 18 wks. After my 16 wk appt but before anomaly scan. Hth.

Number3cometome · 16/03/2015 12:23

Smogs yes it does!

That's great news. I did see the consultant at 16 weeks, he said 38 weeks but didn't fix a set date.

Without sounding too up my own arse, I would really like to know so I can plan childcare, maternity leave and also paternity leave for my partner.

I'm seeing my consultant for the first time on Friday I'm wanting a section so will be asking to be booked in then for the same reasons as you I need to plan childcare for Ds1, paternity leave, nursery etc

WrappedInABlankie · 16/03/2015 12:32

I'll be 26+5

Number3cometome · 16/03/2015 12:34

Can you let me know how you get on?

I am not sure if he just wanted me to get the anomoly scan out of the way first?

I am booked in for growth scans too at 28,31,34 & 37 weeks.

My last appointment with him is 30 weeks, but would rather know dates before then!

I was booked in for my ELCS at my consultant appointment when I was 19 weeks.

Number3cometome · 16/03/2015 12:37

Out of curiosity, did they book you in for 38 or 39 weeks?

I'd like to be a little bit cheeky and push my luck for a specific date which is 39+2

The reason being the anaesthetist that I saw only works Tuesdays!!

OP posts:
Hellohellohowareyou · 16/03/2015 12:39

I've been booked in at 39 weeks exactly. He just said they don't like to do them before then.

I know what you mean about wanting to know the date in order to be organised, I was so relieved and somewhat surprised that I could book mine in at a relatively early stage in tiny pregnancy!

smogsville · 16/03/2015 12:39

Number3 it doesn't sound up your own arse at all! Of course you want to plan.

Mine was booked with caveat that I could get bumped if there were loads of emergencies on the day but apparently 90% of planned ones go ahead as scheduled so crossing fingers. I got a letter in post a couple of weeks after appt with obstetrician to sign consent forms and so on confirming date.

All went smoothly with DD, this is my second planned section. Like you I'll be under GA as per first time around. Good luck getting it sorted.

Bigbadgeorge · 16/03/2015 12:41

:-( I'm having to wait until 34 weeks to get booked in

RedToothBrush · 16/03/2015 12:41

The vast majority of hospitals won't book you in until very late on in your pregnancy. Its policy and often to do with the fact they don't open a diary until much closer to the time (think staff holidays as much as anything) as well as the practical fact that they don't want to have too many cancellations if circumstances change (eg premature labour or a planned section needs to be brought forward).

I was booked in at 16 weeks due to exceptional circumstances (anxiety related and this was to help me cope with that so in effect was for health reasons in its own right). I have found that seems to be exceptional unusual.

Booking in after 30 weeks (and usually later) tends to be the norm.

Personally I think more woman should be able to book in sooner but I do understand to a certain extent why this does need to be limited to a degree too.

smogsville · 16/03/2015 12:42

Mine's at 39+1. Something to do with baby's lung development means they don't like to do them earlier unless other pressing medical reasons.

I'm quite pleased it's a Thursday as if I get bumped, it will go ahead on the Friday whereas if booked for a fri you have to wait until the Monday as no elective work happens at the weekend. Something to think about!

PrincessOfChina · 16/03/2015 12:46

I wasn't booked in until 32 weeks. I think that's standard.

Number3cometome · 16/03/2015 12:47

My consultant wanted 38 weeks, same as my DD.
I want to push a week forward (DD had stomach and jaundice issues)
According to my dates she was 37 weeks.

I have also been dated a week ahead again, despite protesting and an ovulation (progesterone test) showing I hadn't ovulated on day 14.

But alas, the scan size is correct in their eyes.

For those booked in after 30 weeks - was it always a case of having to have a CS or a late decision?

OP posts:
WrappedInABlankie · 16/03/2015 12:54

Of course I can.

I don't see him after then till May and I'll be 34+5 but ny Dsis who'll look after my DS needs 4-6 weeks minimum notice as does her husband so will really push for Friday or a meeting in between as otherwise I'll have nobody to look after him lol

Hellohellohowareyou · 16/03/2015 13:01

My hospital has two theatres, one for ELCS's and one reserved for EMCS's so hoping mine will happen on the day it should.

they only like to book two in a day so and I was the first in the diary for that day so I'm hoping for a morning baby Grin

Number3cometome · 16/03/2015 13:06

Mine is under a GA, so not sure if things are done differently?

I can't even remember when I was booked in with DD

DS was an emergency

OP posts:
cathpip · 16/03/2015 13:10

With my previous two sections I found out at 38 weeks when my section would be, it's my hospital policy and it's all to do with rotas and theatre staff availability. I can always narrow it down to a set 5 days as unless you have a medical need for an early elcs they will section you in your 39th week, oh and trying to use child care as a reason for getting a date sooner has never washed with my hospital!

Number3cometome · 16/03/2015 13:12

It's not so much the childcare really, it's more the anaesthetist being available (for some reason I trust her and she sounded confident)

Consultant said 38 weeks, so it is me who is pushing for a week later.

OP posts:
WrappedInABlankie · 16/03/2015 13:15

Ds was a cat-1 emergency section under GA, this one shouldn't be under GA hopefully

It may not wash with the hospital but it's true. If nobody can have DS that day then I won't be having the section as I can't leave him at home lol

Number3cometome · 16/03/2015 13:22

DS was a GA, DD was a spinal block, GA this time as I now have a full lumbar fusion with metalwork, nothing is getting in there to numb the area.

I am gutted, but such is life.

Just never booked for a CS under GA so it will be so odd.

Childcare is an issue for me too, like you say, if no one can have your kids, you cannot make it, and if you go in to labour it ends up being an emergency anyway, then they HAVE to do it, so best they try to compromise with you rather than say no!

OP posts:
PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 16/03/2015 13:36

Couldn't it also be 38 + 2 if they work every week?

I think it's understandable to want someone you trust. Does having that date mean it will definitely (holiday, illness, etc aside) be her?

I would explain. You have pretty specific circumstances.

Number3cometome · 16/03/2015 13:45

Don't want 38 weeks - I am sure they have my dates wrong which will make me 37 weeks. I had the same with DD and she had stomach and jaundice problems, would rather go in later.

Yes, she confirmed she is available on the 14th.

I may have to beg and cry (it's not hard to cry at the moment ha!)

I got booked in at 11 weeks but I think that is down to a slightly maverick consultant as the nurses made a fuss that he was ignoring all their rules!

I was so pleased (was for 39+5) and made the appropriate childcare arrangements etc and then got a call when I was about 37 weeks to say the theatre was now closed that day for a clinical audit and offering me a date a week earlier. I refused this as I felt it was too early but had to make a right old fuss, see the consultant again etc.

By that stage they officially had no spaces between my 39th and 41st week but the consultant again ignored the rules and booked me in for 40+4. I was OK with this as had previously gone to 40+11, and it all went fine. But my point being that you can't count too much on the date you are given staying fixed, although maybe more so with a GA, I would hope, OP.
