Waters have gone at 32 weeks

My waters went on Friday morning at 31+6 weeks. I have been given 2 lots of steroids and I'm staying in hospital until tomorrow. They will send me home tomorrow morning after a scan and I will need to come back every few days to be put on a trace etc and have my blood pressure checked.

The midwives, consultants and nurses have all been fantastic. I've been for a tour around NICU incase I go into labour and I've been told ill be induced between 34 and 36 weeks if I don't get an infection or go into labour naturally before then.

I'm desperate to get home and spend some time with my DD, but I'm scared that I will miss something at home and not notice if there's something wrong with the baby! I know waters can regenerate but (tmi) I'm losing a large amount every evening so I'm guessing whatever is being regenerated is coming straight out as soon as I lie down!

Has anyone been in this situation, or is due in the next few weeks? I'm still so unprepared I thought I had at least another month! The first thing ill be doing when I get home is packing mine and babies hospital bags as DP had to pack mine for this stay. Maternity pad on a thong anyone? Confused

If anyone has been through anything similar I would appreciate positive stories also! And any tips on not worrying, or what I might need extra for an early baby as opposed to a full term one!

I'm sorry I can't help & I'm sure some one will be along soon. The maternity pad & thong made me laugh.... I would follow the advice & your dd will fine (if you need to stay in).

This happened to my friend at 32 weeks. She went into labour spontaneously a few days later. Her baby was kept in scbu for a few weeks and she had a tough time getting started with breastfeeding. Buthey longer term there were no problems and her baby is now a happy and healthy five year old.

My DS3 was born by EMCS at 30+5 when I went in the labour naturally. He was fine apart from a 6 week stay in NICU. He had to have a lot of treatment for jaundice and a feeding tube and breathing machine (CPAP) for a couple of weeks, which was pretty heartbreaking. He's 2 now, and has absolutely no problems. I also didn't have any trouble breastfeeding. The hospital got me set up with an electric pump pretty quickky after he was born, and I rented one to use when I got home. I pumped for the 6 weeks he was in hospital then picked up normal feeding when he got home. The nurses told me that it's easier to pump when you've already successfully breastfed before. Good luck and try not to worry - anything past 32 weeks is considered much lower risk. We were lucky that DS3 was such a good size, otherwise the outlook at 30 weeks wouldn't have necesserily been so good...

Oh jelly thank you for a positive story!

I'm aware 32 weekers have a very good chance of being perfectly healthy with only a little bit of extra help and the staff deal with much tinier babies. DD was 2 weeks overdue and forced out so this is all new to me Grin

what are the chances of me going home and missing something going wrong? And does he really not need any water in there? Shock

Cross posted amy! Thank you! I struggled with breast feeding with DD but I think it was latching problems and lack of support. I was determined to do it this time and now it seems so much more important to help him that way too so hopefully ill get away with expressing if I need to- I did have a lot of milk with DD so hopefully won't have too much of a problem fingers crossed!

I've seen the small baby car seat inserts, do I need to get one or will the car seat be okay how it was going to be, I've got a britax and it has the standard new born seat insert in it

My waters went a lot earlier at 24weeks, I went into natural labour 3 weeks later. You are at greatest risk of going into labour in the first 48hrs of your waters going, there after, the chances fall significantly.

The fact you have had steroids and are over 30 weeks is very positive. Have you been given anti biotics too? and are you having regular blood tests to check CRP marker??

My advice would be to rest, rest and rest, I know this will be hard with another child, I had a 2 yr old at the time, but looking back I really wish I would have rested more, I wonder if I had last even longer? Do you have RL support who could help with this? In the States you would be out on bed rest.

Good luck, try to stay calm and relaxed too, (easier said than done) I eventually fell into the mindset, that it was all completely out of my control so all the worrying in the world was not going to alter things. Flowers

Hello,my dd was born at 33 weeks. She was 4lbs 7. We were both in hospital for 1 week then I was punted and she was in for a further 2 weeks. No oxygen req. I wxpressed for her feeding tube and was her inability to regulate her temp/jaundice that was keeping her in. She is now 6 months and the picture of health :) good luck op, it is emotionally exhausting but you can do it xx

laurenamium · 01/03/2015 07:27

Oh yes summer I forgot about those. I have antibiotics that I have to take every 6 hours for 12 days. No bloods have been taken since I first came in on Friday morning, but they check my blood pressure, pulse and temp every 4 hours at the minute!

I'm going to have to be strict with myself about resting. I made the consultant swear yesterday when I asked about whether I could still muck out the horses Grin and I've made the phone calls and I'm now on maternity leave too so it'll just be resting at home and cleaning and spending time with DD when they let me out!

They're letting me go home today with anti biotics, I have a scan tomorrow but it'll be nice to be in my own bed and with DD again!

My waters went at 34 weeks and I was sent home after a few days and told to monitor temp etc.
Baby stopped moving the day after and I was back in for a scan and baby wasn't moving at all so I was induced at 35 weeks.
DS was born 4lb 14 and had a tube into his tummy for 3 days until he could feed himself. Apart from that he was totally fine. No breathing problems or anything else. We had 4 days in hospital and then came home.

neversleepagain · 01/03/2015 11:22

My waters went at 34+4, I was admitted and given steroids. I started contracting the next day and my twins were born by emcs 2 hours later. They spent 13 days in scbu.

Best of luck :)

Nolim · 01/03/2015 11:27

My waters broke at 35 weeks. Was given steroids and antibiotics. Contractions started naturaly 4 days later. I had my baby. Dc had jaundice so we had to stay at the hospital for a week but not in the icu. I had some trouble bf so i mix fed.

Oh I'm loving these positive stories with only short stays in NICU! This is what I'm hoping for!

My scan is at 3pm tomorrow so I guess they'll be clearer then about how much waters is there and how big he is too, my waters going has released pressure on my pelvis and my SPD is totally gone now which is a huge relief!

My dd was born at almost 34 weeks, a nice healthy 5lb 5 and other than 3 days on cpap and a total of 2 weeks in scubu she thrived and is now a gorgeous 5-year-old.

My waters went one evening and she was born the following evening naturally after a VERY quick labour.

I didn't attempt breastfeeding because of the circumstances and I discharged myself after the first night in hospital but spent all day everyday in scubu. I'd definitely recommend as it gave me the opportunity to process what had happened at home at night and get a good night sleep without putting myself under the added pressure of being around babies on the ward whilst my little angel was elsewhere.

My second is due in the summer and I'm hoping I'll be as lucky as I was with my first. Smile

Ratarse · 01/03/2015 15:28

And yes, you'll definitely know about it when you go into labour. X

RL20 · 01/03/2015 15:41

Hi Lauren, hope you're feeling ok. I've got no experience in this myself but I'm in the April antenatal club on here and there's lady in there who's waters broke around 7 weeks ago I think. I don't know too much about her story so I won't go into any detail but as far as I know she's doing ok and baby is still ok too and has not yet made an appearance, I think she's due to be induced but I'm not sure when. She might come along on this thread if she sees it and be able to tell you more.

A lady I know of had her baby at 32/33 weeks back in December, again with her I don't know the story but he was around 5lbs I think, or a little under, and seems to be doing well! She was in hospital with him for a few weeks but has been home for a fair while now.

Hope all goes well for you and baby and sorry I couldn't really give you any information or advice! Thanks

RL20 · 01/03/2015 15:48

Also with the knowing when you're going into labour thing, again I'm due in April with my first so have no clue myself but one of my colleagues went into labour on her last day at work when she was 35 weeks but didn't know she was in labour. She was complaining of lower back pain and feeling sick so other people were telling her she was in labour and to get to the hospital, but she didn't really know herself! She had her baby that night/early hours! Baby was absolutely fine, healthy weight for his gestational age and as far as I'm aware she was only in hospital for a few days. She did say he developed jaundice a couple of weeks later but it was quickly treated and he's now around 1years old I think x

Cisforcat · 01/03/2015 16:28

Although my DD was born at 42+1 , I was born at 32 weeks. I had no problems either short or long term and was only in an incubator a short time with no other intervention needed. I was 4lb exactly.
I'm now 31 and never had any issues so don't worry!

babiecakes thank you! It's so nice to hear someone going through the same thing so I know what to be looking out for etc! How much have you been doing at home etc? I want to feel normal but also just want to sleep!

Thank you to the other posters too for positive stories Thanks it's so easy to get sucked into thinking the worst is going to happen, I'm quite a control freak so this is new territory for me not being in charge! Suppose I better get used to it Grin
