Had a baby over 9lb15?

Wasn't sure where to put this so here goes ...

If you had a baby over 9lb15 or 4500g at birth, what was your baby's postnatal treatment like?

Is it standard to stay in hospital for blood sugar testing etc?

I've already had SVD for 9lb+ babies so not at all concerned about labour, but trying to think about the practicalities now.

There's no GD and no GTT booked this time (passed one last time) but plenty of time yet.

I can't find any NICE guidelines as they all refer to induction for macrosomia or GD.

TIA

Hi my last baby was 10lb 1oz and had no additional tests for anything and we had a normal length stay in hospital.

serislou · 26/02/2015 12:22

My first was 10lb and we had a normal stay in hospital but we did have an appt to check for hip dysplasia? because she was a girl and over 4500g at birth. I also had closer monitoring - more scans and an extra blood glucose test - for subsequent pregnancies to keep an eye on size although that might also be because she was an emcs.

ChocolateBiscuitCake · 26/02/2015 12:23

You should still have a GTT test this pregnancy (every pregnancy is different) and your midwife will no doubt have you referred to a consultant too given your history of a big baby (I saw the consultant who then said I didn't need to see him again!).

My hospital for ds3 had a policy to do a hip check and scan at about two weeks old because he was big.

AnythingNotEverything · 26/02/2015 12:31

Sorry - I didn't mean I wouldn't have one this time because I passed one last time, it was just for info.

I saw a consultant after 12 week scan just to discuss whether I'd have a routine GTT this time and it was agreed not too as no clinical need. Obviously this may change but that's true in any pregnancy.

I won't get a routine GTT (must be trust policy) and no extra scans or appointment due to large babies. I think I just grow them big, but I'm nearly 6 foot myself ...

Interesting responses. I though checking blood sugars (in case of undiagnosed GD) was standard with a 4.5kg+ baby. Obviously not.

Thanks Tori - so we may yet squeeze out on a 6 hour discharge ...

Mine were 12lb 4 & 9lb 15. Nothing extra afterwards exclusively breastfed both. I passed GTT at 28 weeks.

StrawberryTallCake · 26/02/2015 12:55

10lb 4oz dd - nothing different to lighter dc1, would have been out within 6 hours if I hadn't given birth at night time.

OinkBalloon · 26/02/2015 12:55

My last was 11lb, SVD, and the hospital were ready to discharge me within a few hours. No special treatment.

I refused the GTT, and there was no suggestion that my big babies were big because of diabetes. They were not fat, just long and proportionate.

Allshallbewell · 26/02/2015 12:59

I've had 2 over 10lbs (my second and third babies). Both had hip scans at 2 weeks (although my first child did have hip displasia, so think they would have done this regardless). DC3 also had his blood sugars monitored which I was told was because a) he was born quite rapidly, b) he was over 4.5kg and c) he was 'jittery'. In the end he had to be monitored every 3 hours for 48 hours until his blood sugars reached an acceptable level.
Good luck!

Lovstigen · 26/02/2015 13:00

My 3rd and last was 10lb 5oz, no indications I was going to have a big baby so it was a shock. But no complications, quick labour.

We did have to stay in for one night they wanted to make sure her blood sugar level didn't drop and gave supplementary feeding every 3 hours. It was because her weight exceeded her length or something. Anyway they gave me a feeding regime for when we got home, but I didn't follow it, I just breastfed her on demand.

On the plus side she ate ALOT and slept like a dream.......

beepbeep · 26/02/2015 13:04

Last 2 DCs over 10lb, other than them not wanting me to have DC3 at a birthing centre due to DC2's size, I had nothing different before or after the births. (I argued and had DC3 at the birthing centre - no issues with either birth!)

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 26/02/2015 13:13

11lb 3oz here, I had to stay overnight for extra blood tests because he was so big, otherwise we'd have been home within hours.

AnythingNotEverything · 26/02/2015 13:18

TheWild - extra blood tests for you or for him?

lovestigen Maybe that's it, the weight v length issue. Mine were both in proportion, so heavy ds was really long too.

TMAC79 · 26/02/2015 13:42

Hi, my DD2 was less than 9lb 15oz - she weighed 9lb 9.5oz but her weight put her above the 91st centile. My local hospital kept us in as I was told that all babies that were over the 91st have their blood sugars monitored for 24 hours after birth. So it was based on where she was on the growth chart rather than actual weight.

Pico2 · 26/02/2015 13:42

DD was 9lb 12 oz, which was big for her gestation. The MW phoned the pediatricians who requested that her blood glucose be measured before feeds and that she have two consecutive "good" results before we could stop monitoring. She failed the first one (too sleepy/lazy to feed) and passed the next 2. It didn't make any difference to our stay as I had an ELCS, so was staying anyway.

She also took a while to return to her birth weight, so we were told by either a HV or MW to make sure she didn't go longer than 4 hours between feeds.

SunnyNights1 · 26/02/2015 13:51

My DS was 11 pounds 9oz and we didn't stay in any longer than usual, he wasn't interested in feeding but took enough for them to be happy to discharge us. He was an odd baby in that he never ever cried for feeds, we just fed him every three hours as I didn't want him going longer than that. I used to wake him for feeds, all very odd now looking back on it.

Perfectly average five year old now.

lunalovegood84 · 26/02/2015 18:26

Mine was 11 lbs 9 oz and had blood sugar monitoring, although I thought they told me it was because I'd had a labetalol tablet for high bp at the start of labour. I could be wrong, I was a bit spaced out after an eventful labour. They also insisted that he was fed within a few hours of birth and as I wasn't producing any milk he was given formula.

BlueStringPudding · 26/02/2015 19:37

DS was 10lb 4.5oz and we went home about 8 hours after he was born. No extra tests, no idea what GTT is so don't think that was mentioned. DH is tall - 6ft 7"and DS was long and skinny when he was born. He's 8 now, and still tall and skinny.

PrincessSmartipants · 26/02/2015 19:41

My last baby was 4.54 kg and no special treatment at all! Nobody mentioned it other than to say he had a large head don't I fucking know it Certainly no blood sugar tests were done.

MrsHooolie · 26/02/2015 20:46

Hi,1st baby was 9lb 5oz. No sugar testing on baby or anything.
2nd baby,I had regular growth scans due to massive bump and a negative Gestational Diabetes test.
Baby was 10lb 6oz and his blood was tested at birth. It was extremely low and he was in special care for a week.

ag123 · 26/02/2015 21:06

Hi, 1st baby was 11lbs. They monitored his sugar levels and had to top-up with formula as my milk didn't come in for a good few days. I had always thought colostrum would be everything they need to begin with but maybe it's not the same for these ultra-big babies. I was devastated I'd had to give formula at the time (though with hindsight know it was completely the right thing to do-he had low blood sugar, he needed it!) and remember reading about, was it called 'colostrum harvesting' or something... I.e expressing in advance of giving birth and freezing in tiny syringes and wondered whether that could have helped/been an alternative to topping-up. Anyway, I managed to ebf for more than 6 months so was no real harm done there. Currently pg with dc2 though so might at least see if I can read a bit about it again...

AnythingNotEverything · 26/02/2015 21:58

I think in nature colustrum is all they need. I think our target and measurements led HCPs are very keen to top up with formula to make things simple.

IMHO.

my ds was 10lb9oz no extra tests or checks, couldn't feed him straight off as I needed a bit of attention but he was exclusive bf. the midwife apologised for missing his size! he is still big for his age now.
