hello ladies

went for scan on saturday at what should have been 7+6 based on LMP.

at first all looked great, as the baby was there, was in the right place, and had a decent hb. but then she did a tv to measure it, and sadly not such good news. the baby only measures 6+1. as i do have long cycles, and as everything was the same size (ie it would have been worse if the sac had measured 7+6), she gave us a 50/50 chance and said to come back next week.

pretty gutted, especially as i'm 37 and this is my first/only, so have no idea if it will ever happen for us now. hope everyone else is having a much better time of it x

Oh No!

I dont know if this helps but I went for one yesterday too and the sonographer put us back a week BUT she went to great lengths to say that at this stage the baby is so so small that there is a very real possibility that she may have missed a bit of baby's length on the ultrasound. Apparently its not uncommon to have bits of baby hiding. For that reason she said not to pay too much attention to the date - the heartbeat was there and strong, the baby had lots of room in which to grow and a decent yolk sac. These were all the things she was looking for.

I hope that puts your mind at ease a little my lovely but I'd really recommend calling your midwife and talking it through xxx

gingerbreadmam · 16/02/2015 09:35

it just sounds like ur dates are out if everything us measuring the same. i would be more worried if for example the sack was large and the baby small.

im sure i read on here or somewherw else that after seeing a hb the chance of mc drops massively. i would try not to worry at all.

did u go private? if you can afford another scan for peace of mind maybe go again in 5 - 7 days. i think at this stage they grow quite quickly so should be a significant difference.

realistically all babies cant be the same size at the same time, thats just not true to life. i think anyway ha! hope u r ok Thanks

leanne963 · 16/02/2015 09:44

I went for a scan at what I estimated was 7w1d and ended up being told that I was 5w5d and the baby was so small! I am now 26w1d so try not to worry! It can mean you just got your dates slightly out! Good luck x

happygojo · 16/02/2015 10:14

I haven't been in your situation. But babies grow at different rates. At my 12 week scan I was supposed to be 12+1 and they put me as 13+1. If the new dates were right, it would mean I would have conceived on like a monday when I was still on my period! Not exactly feeling my sexiest!

I do hope everything works out for you. The baby is still very small, even at 7 weeks so there is time for it to grow. Dates aren't really all that accurate from what I can tell

Good luck

Floggingmolly · 16/02/2015 10:19

The heartbeat is THE Most significant factor at this stage. It reduces the miscarriage risk to around 2%, iirc. Hopefully you'll be just fine Flowers

callamia · 16/02/2015 10:22

I had a 9 week scan (by LMP), and my dates were pushed back by a fortnight. I knew my cycles were way too long for the LMP estimate to be right, and DS ended up being born a whole month after my initial due date, and two weeks after his scan due-date.

If you know your cycles are long, this might not be a problem at all. I hope all is just fine at your next scan, but it sounds like things are pretty promising.

Number3cometome · 16/02/2015 10:30

Try not to worry too much, I have been put back a week on every early scan I have had!

My last scan (this is DC3) I was put back to 7 weeks, when I thought I was 8 weeks.

I was then put forward a week at my 12 week scan.

A good heartbeat is encouraging (although there are no guarantees in pregnancy as we know)

scarednoob · 16/02/2015 11:16

thank you so much lovely ladies, your kind thoughts make me feel a bit better.

i guess she had to be stark with me, and i'd rather be prepared and then get a nice surprise than think everything is fine only to get a nasty shock, but it was a massive downer for valentines weekend. poor OH was trying so hard to be positive and supportive for me, then i found him crying to himself in the kitchen, what a shame! x

If you have long cycles, there is every chance this accounts for it.

I have short cycles, and seemed a week "ahead" at early scans - and I found that the person who did the scan AND the midwife were quite dismissive of my explanation about cycles - although it seemed logical to me given that everything is based on 28 days and my cycle at the time was 20/21!

Wishing you all the best for some positive news at the next scan.

Mixtape · 16/02/2015 11:23

Not that I explained cycles to them, that sounds awful! I mean their response when they told me and I said oh, I expect it is because I have short cycles they didn't act like it made any difference

Zachmeister · 16/02/2015 11:31

I would try not to worry, the reason the dating scan is around 12 weeks is that is the best time to get accurate measurements. I don't understand why so many of you have had early scans unless there is previous history of mc/spotting etc. I think for most the first three months is along,. 'fingers crossed' time. Wishing you all the best xx

sbear22 · 16/02/2015 13:09

I've no experience with this, just want to send you some love. heartbeat is a really good sign. keep us updated, keeping everything crossed for you, your partner and your baby. x

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 16/02/2015 13:45

I have long cycles and at my early scan they took this into account when measuring the baby as the LMP estimate was very likely to be incorrect. At 9 weeks based on LMP baby measured 8 weeks but as I have 35 day cycles they said that was to be expected. I'm now 19+6 and the date given at my 12 week scan corresponded to my early scan date too rather than my LMP date. Remember LMP is only an estimate and every woman is different.

FX for you. Seeing a heartbeat is a great sign Smile

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 16/02/2015 13:47

Zach I had an early scan due to spotting. I think that's the reason that a lot of women have them. Also anxiety/being unsure of dates etc. Many, many reasons which don't affect or hurt anyone else.

sianihedgehog · 16/02/2015 14:17

My dates were out by about a week and a bit at my 6.5 week scan, but when I went back 10 days later, baby had doubled in size and all was well. By 10 weeks, baby was measuring a week ahead instead!
Everything is impossibly tiny at that stage, it is hard to measure accurately, and cycles often vary by a large amount.

blowinahoolie · 16/02/2015 16:01

I had a MMC last year. They scanned me when I should have been around 8 weeks, but measurements were showing at around

BalloonSlayer · 16/02/2015 16:22

I had a viability scan at 8 weeks due to 3 m/c. It was also a dating scan because I didn't have a LMP date as I had preciously had a miscarriage and they wouldn't use my miscarriage date although it tallied perfectly with everything by my calculations.

As it happens I was absolutely confident when conception had occurred Wink and was mightily pissed off when they dated the pregnancy four days behind my calculations. I worried that this meant it wasn't going well, baby too small etc, just the same as you are worrying.

They refused to change "their" date throughout my pregnancy even when parts of DS1 (thighs and head) were measuring 40 weeks at 34 weeks. Needless to say the lazy bugger wasn't keen on making the effort to leave his cosy womb (nothing has changed) so he was late. But they won't induce till you are 2 weeks late and I was frantically worried because I KNEW that would be 2 weeks + 4 days late IYSWIM, and I thought that was leaving him too long.

Gormless great article is now 14 and nearly 5'10". Still has long thighs and big head.

Wishing you all the best!

D0nnaO · 16/02/2015 17:54

we had a private reassurance scan when I was 7+5 LMP & baby measured 6+3, then at my 12wk NHS scan when I was 12+1 LMP baby measured 12+2.

Hope this helps Thanks

PippaB007 · 16/02/2015 20:57

It could have been me writing that. I also went for my 8 week scan, based on the first date of my last period. The Dr could confirm a pregnancy, but not 8 weeks. Either irregular periods made the dating incorrect, or there is a problem with the pregnancy.

They took bloods for the hCG hormone level this morning, and will repeat the test on Wednesday. If the hormone levels rise sufficiently, all clear. If not, miscarriage.

I'll know Wednesday afternoon.

Good luck - the uncertainty is the worst.

Ridingthestorm · 16/02/2015 21:05

Long cycles tend to ovulate later. It is 'assumed' that we all ovulate 14 days prior to our period. So me (on a 24 day cycle) would ovulate on day 10 after the first day of my period but my friend (41 day cycle) would ovulate on day 27 after her first day of her period.
Cycle lengths do vary and can vary the date of concpetion hence why some women find themselves 1 or 2 weeks out. There are also some women who ovulate very early or late but most ovulate approximately 14 days before their next period irrespective of their cycle length. As with everything, there are always exceptions.

PippaB007 · 16/02/2015 21:10

PS - I'm 42 in March, and have two lovely, healthy kids - daughter 5 and son 2 and a half. If it weren't for my age, I'd have scheduled my first scan at 12 weeks. I've survived half a day at work after the appointment. I just wish I knew.

GingerCuddleMonster · 16/02/2015 21:14

DS measured way to small, they put him at 5+2 on a dating scan, he couldn't have been, I didn't have any action on the supposed date of concepption or for a fortnight before, he should have measured nearly 9weeks. He's asleep on the bed next to me. He is still a small baby 2nd percentile, he had a hb that's all I cared about.

good luck xx

scarednoob · 16/02/2015 22:33

Thank you to everyone who's shared their story or comments. It's a truly horrifying wait, and I must admit I do feel like I'm waiting for the inevitable sometimes.

I never knew there were so many tiny different coloured flecks in toilet paper until I started inspecting it a hundred times a day!!

Philippa (hope I got that right, iPhone won't let me scroll up), lots and lots of luck with your scan x

Ps - I had my scan because of my age and because I am driving myself totally mental with panicking over symptoms etc. I look like the local pervert, walking around grabbing my boobs every 5 minutes! I thought/hoped it would put my mind at rest but sadly not :(

Update - thanks all but started bleeding this morning so I think that's the answer :(((((
