whooping cough jab???

I'm booked in to have the whooping cough jab tomorrow at my local doctors, but I haven't been offered it at my hospital appointments.

I asked the doctor at the hospital last week, but she didn't know they were being offered.
Totally confused now, should I have the Jab or not.

It's done by your GP, not the hospital. I'd recommend having the Jab as I almost died from Whooping cough when I was little and it'll protect your baby while they're inside until they have their vaccinations at 8 weeks.

MoominMama22 · 12/02/2015 18:25

Its normally done by the nurse at your usual GP practice. The doc at the hospital was prob just out of touch with what's offered because its not done there, and the drive to vaccinate in preg has only been going for a couple of years.
Not to put you off , but just so you are aware , its a 4in1 vaccine and reaction to it can be quite severe. I had mine on Monday and have felt rubbishy and fluey since. I also think its stupid she put it in my left arm as your supposed to lie on your left side in pregnancy and now I can't.
So I would sum up by saying , still get it as it protects your baby but get it maybe when you have some time after to recover if you need to and ask if she'll put it in your right arm if you lie on your left!
Smile
All the best

I had mine done at the gp surgery too. I think that's routine.

jbee1979 · 12/02/2015 18:28

I had mine yesterday, no ill effects - but it was really sore and my left arm feels bruised today. I can still lie on the left though. nurse said no one else complained of pain - I felt like a wuss!!Grin

MrsKCastle · 12/02/2015 18:35

Is whooping cough around at the moment then? I wasn't offered this 4 years ago when I was pg. I'm curious as I'm now into the 6th week of a particularly nasty cough....

AbbyCadabby · 12/02/2015 18:36

Would people recommend I find someone to drive me home afterwards, or is it not that bad? (As opposed to driving myself. Too far to walk.)

AbbyCadabby · 12/02/2015 18:37

MrsK, the vaccine has been offered since the end of 2012 - I didn't have it for my last pregnancy which was pre-2012.

KeepSmiling83 · 12/02/2015 18:44

I drove home after it and was fine. My arm was achy for a few days and I did get a little lump where the needle went in. But I could still drive, lie on that side etc so I wouldn't worry.

sleepybee · 12/02/2015 18:44

I'm booked to have next week at GP surgery I had to call & book it myself after being advised to have it by the midwife

Dogsmom · 12/02/2015 18:45

I had it done by the nurse at my doctors too, the same with my last pregnancy in 2012/13.

She said there's been no reported bad side effects and it's to give your baby immunity for the first 8 weeks of their life when they will then be given the same vaccine in their routine jabs.

FruitBadger · 12/02/2015 18:49

You won't need anyone to drive you there or back. When I had mine it just felt like a normal injection, I had a slightly bruised feeling in my arm for a few days after but not bad enough to stop me sleeping on it. Have you had the flu jab? I had that and whooping cough at the same time, couldn't remember which one in which arm (they did different arms) but I would say that neither arm felt worse than the other. No other side / after effects at all.

AbbyCadabby · 12/02/2015 18:50

Thanks.

flakebaby · 12/02/2015 18:53

I would definitely have it. Protects newborns who are very vulnerable. Rise in cases in recent years and can result in serious complications. I had it during recent pregnancy.

MoominMama22 · 12/02/2015 18:54

I really hope the 8wk babies get a smaller dose? This has absolutely floored me and I've been on another forum where people have had even worse side effects than me. Confused. Bit worried if I'm honest that my wee bub is going to have to have it so early even with the protection I'm giving them now.

OP - General reaction I think is just an achey arm, so you will hopefully be fine and by the way I was OK to drive.

DanyStormborn · 12/02/2015 19:23

I just had a sore arm. It didn't set in till half an hour after the injection so driving straight afterwards was no problem.

greenlizard · 12/02/2015 19:31

I had it at 32 weeks an 'twas fine (much better than the anti-d injection I needed that had a needle the size of a biro Shock). An achy bit on my arm for a day was the extent of my side effects.

Swanny84 · 12/02/2015 19:40

How far are you when they give jab? Sorry to ask on op thread x

Dogsmom · 12/02/2015 19:42

28 weeks onwards Swanny.

Swanny84 · 12/02/2015 19:48

Thank you Smile still a while for me then, I'm 16+3 x

MonkeySeeMonkeyDooo · 12/02/2015 20:19

I had it, was fine to drive afterwards and felt fine. Just a bit of a bruised
arm.

Moomin both my DS's were ok after their vaccinations at 8 weeks and onwards. It's the same jab. Think they were a bit grumpier and a bit sleepy but otherwise fine. I know it's not nice to think of it but it's really important. Just means more cuddles for the day!

obeliaboo · 13/02/2015 09:21

Im 32 weeks and booked in for mine at the gp next week - only because my MIL asked if i had had it yet, and i was clueless tbh!

sianihedgehog · 13/02/2015 10:58

Yes, you should definitely get it. It's normally done by the GP. I also had whooping cough as a baby and was gravely ill, it can kill young babies so it's really vital to protect yourself and your baby.

blowinahoolie · 14/02/2015 15:13

Flu and whooping cough vaccines are offered routinely at your local GP practice. That's always been the case. You have to organise this yourself. I'm phoning up next week to arrange flu vaccine.

Kym134 · 14/02/2015 15:40

We had an outbreak of whooping cough at work and one woman passed out from coughing.
Also young babies and children don't react as bad as adults.

squizita · 14/02/2015 19:33

Mine was at the gp and I drove home. It wasn't too achey.
