3 weeks pregnant - next steps?

Hi all !

Have just found out I am pregnant - yes very early days - but it's my first and its all new to me. I rang up my gp presuming they would confirm my pregnancy in a more formal way other than 20 home tests! She told me they don't need to do this and to directly call the hospital of whom are sending me paper work and will confirm a date for me to go in at around week 9!! I was shocked.. This seems so far away? I feel like I need to speak to a professional simply because I am new to all this. She did explain to me all the do's and don'ts but I still feel a bit lost!

Can someone please tell me if this is normal procedure?

Thanks so much in advance x

Congratulations!

This is all totally normal. You'll see a midwife at 8/9 weeks for a booking in appointment and have your first scan at 12 weeks.

geekymommy · 06/02/2015 17:17

That's pretty much what happened when I got a positive pregnancy test result. They sent me paperwork and scheduled an appointment for when I was 8 weeks along.

I think early miscarriages are common enough that they don't want to see you until after the risk has gone down some. But I'm not sure what they would have done if I had had a miscarriage before that first appointment. Don't they want to see you after a miscarriage, to make sure everything is OK?

MrsBungle · 06/02/2015 17:21

Totally normal. You see the midwife around 9 weeks for booking in then first scan around 12 weeks.

Littlehopeful · 06/02/2015 17:21

Congratulations.

Yes that's normal your first appt is 8/9 weeks then they will book you for your 12 week scan. It seems so long away but it'll be here before you know it.

Daniellelouisex · 06/02/2015 17:25

Thanks so much Smile feel a lot better now. It just sounded like they couldn't be bothered!!

Congratulations! Yes, entirely normal though.

The NHS Choices site is great for advice on what you can and can't eat (don't take advice from all over the internet - the NHS site is up to date with current guidance).

Oh, and join an antenatal group on here. There'll be others worrying just like you. They're under "becoming a parent".

sebsmummy1 · 06/02/2015 17:31

Take folic acid and try and avoid the foods listed on many websites such as soft cheeses, runny eggs, pate, undercooked meats, alcohol, caffeine.

If you look under 'antenatal clubs' on Mumsnet you should find the October thread where you can talk to people with due dates also in October.

Congratulations xx

Congratulations! When you say three weeks pregnant do you mean your expected period is 3 weeks late (making you 7 weeks pregnant), or do you mean you have tested and got a positive result a week before your period is due? Which is VERY early to get a positive result.

For organising your Booking in appointment, it would be good to be as clear as you can be about your dates :)

AnythingNotEverything · 06/02/2015 17:42

Good point Raw. The first 2 weeks of pregnancy are actually before ovulation.

ohdearitshappeningtome · 06/02/2015 17:42

Congratulations

Unless you're in a different country. We have slightly different recommendations in the US, and I'd imagine other countries have their own. Food safety rules are slightly different everywhere (just as an example it's safe to not refrigerate eggs in the UK and Europe, but not in the US, and it is because different production practices are used), so it's worth finding local advice.

You will hear all kinds of things that people gave up because they were pregnant. Sometimes this is because of nausea or changes in sense of smell or taste. Obviously that wouldn't apply to you if those things don't nauseate you. My sister couldn't have peanut butter when she was pregnant with my niece, because the smell turned her stomach. I craved peanut butter earlier in my pregnancy. It's pretty common to be sickened by the smell of bacon or coffee. Some women will tell you that some particular food or food ingredient is dangerous in pregnancy. Some of this advice is well founded in science, some isn't. I don't give up stuff unless there is some decent research saying it actually is harmful. But it really does make you feel better to give up a certain food, there's not much harm in it, unless you're giving up a lot of foods. It's worth while to be conservative about taking medicines, but you don't have to give up every medicine you're taking. In fact, there are some medicines that you shouldn't give up without tapering off, and some that are actually dangerous to quit (some blood pressure medicines, for example). Ask your doctor.

There is no food that you absolutely have to eat, no matter what anyone tells you. Name any food, and there have been women who have had successful pregnancies and healthy children without it (obviously, the Native Americans and Europeans prior to 1492 had totally different diets, and they all managed to have babies).

weelamb123 · 06/02/2015 18:47

Yes I know it seems quite far away but this is normal procedure now. U will receive booking appt for between 8-10 weeks and then a date for ur scan between 12-14 weeks. Only way u would be seen earlier is if u had previous miscarriages or are bleeding and\or have pain. Good luck xx

geekymommy · 06/02/2015 19:13

Just because a medicine is natural or herbal or a vitamin or doesn't require a prescription doesn't mean it is OK to take during pregnancy. If there are any non-prescription medicines or supplements that you normally take, ask your doctor about them. I wouldn't worry about herbs used in cooking, though, unless you're using really huge amounts of them in everything you cook.

gingerbreadmam · 06/02/2015 19:19

gatecrashing the thread because i will be 4wks pg on monday if my feint test is what it seems to be. this is probably a silly question but does soft cheese include philadelphia type cheese?

SoonToBeSix · 06/02/2015 19:21

No not Philadelphia .

gingerbreadmam · 06/02/2015 20:01

ahh phew i had a jacket with aldi philly today. thank you.

AnythingNotEverything · 06/02/2015 20:18

Gingerbreadmam - I recognise you from the June threads. So, so pleased for you Grin

gingerbreadmam · 06/02/2015 21:06

oh thank you anything i stupidly tested yest and today, af not due till monday but i have the feintest line.

feel scared, in disbelief and massively lucky. my mmc only ended 14 december due to lots of complications so to get a bfp this soon (if that is what it is) is just amazing!

AnythingNotEverything · 06/02/2015 21:07

Fingers crossed for you x

gingerbreadmam · 06/02/2015 21:37

thank you. hope things are progressing well for you x

geekymommy · 07/02/2015 01:39

In the US, they tell us not to eat cheeses made with unpasteurized milk. Philadelphia cream cheese is made with pasteurized milk, at least here. I don't worry too much about any mass-produced cheese, they're unlikely to use raw milk.

gingerbreadmam · 07/02/2015 06:11

thanks geeky

NowABitShapeless · 07/02/2015 07:34

This is exactly what I was wondering! Although I did get a BFP 9dpo which is very early.

Congratulation btw, and yes totally normal not to confirm a pregnancy, the tests are all the same.

ch1134 · 07/02/2015 08:38

Same question, how can you be 3 weeks? you can't know until 4 weeks (4 weeks after your last period). Good luck and congrats!

gingerbreadmam · 07/02/2015 10:54

dont know about op but my first bfp altho barely there this time was thursday and af not due till monday. 28 day cycle so in that case i am 3 wks pg, 4wks on monday of ive got it right.
