I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!prescribinginfosub

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Hi everyone, can I join you? Have finally made it to 13 weeks today and am feeling stronger than I have in ages after a trip to hospital over the weekend. Can't believe the difference it has made being on a drip and getting anti emetics by injection rather than tablets. I still feel quite floppy and weak and get tired really easily but before hospital visit I was struggling to stand for any length of time, had distorted vision and was throwing up every half hour or so, so a massive improvement. Am back on cyclizine which so far seems to be doing the trick which it wasn't before. Ate spag bol last night and felt so happy!

Hellohellohowareyou · 07/04/2015 18:27

Thanks lucinda 11 weeks today for me!

Hellohellohowareyou · 07/04/2015 18:27

To go that is!

Meerka · 07/04/2015 20:19

wishing everyone a quiet day tomorrow and hopefully, hopefully a peaceful one.

LucindaE · 08/04/2015 13:16

Welcome Ca55. I do hope that they trip has turned the corner for you, but if the cyclezine stops doing it's job again, don't hesitate to ask for different meds or additonal ones. People suffer in silence with this too much.
Have you got the famous kestostix to check for ketones just in case, though while you're eating, thank goodness, not likely to need them?
Hello It's too bad the puke a day goes on.
Waves to all hoping all are coping.

Good day followed by shocking evening yesterday and poor day today. It's a good lesson learned, particularly with planning to go back to work a week on Monday; definitely not full time and definitely take things slowly!

someone asked me about who prescribed ondansetron for me, can't remember who. I can't believe you've got to go private to get ondansetron, my fear would be that you'd then have to pay private costs for the ondansetron, which I understand is very pricey. I went to the early pregnancy unit at my hospital, and they started tge ball rolling with cyclizine. The out of hours doc took me thru buccaStem, promethazine and something else. Then a phone call back to the epu on the Monday (had been there on Thurs for rehydration drip) got me tge ondansetron -The nurse I spoke to arranged with a consultant for the prescription. Is there an early pregnancy unit near you? It might be worth asking your doctor to refer you there. I know I was given a maternity triage number at my booking apt, did you? Try ringing them. I think your gp is right in that he can't prescribe it initially, but he can certainly do repeat prescriptions.

CaspianSea · 08/04/2015 15:23

Ealli, sorry to hear you're having a bad day. Did you make it to Manchester in the end?

Ca55 welcome to the thread, glad you're feeling better on meds.

I'm off work again. The silver lining of feeling so ill is I don't feel guilty at all about calling in sick. Still got a severe headache that almost lifts at times then returns to migraine-type level. Every time I vomit it jars head. Yesterday I was throwing up everything and spent half night crouched over loo retching bile. DH didn't know what to do and kept trying to feed me parts of a doughnut as he was worried my blood-sugar was low. I have vivid memory of him sitting on bathroom floor hopefully holding out bits of doughnut like he was feeding a bird!

Today is slightly better day, I managed to keep down cereal and toast and some boiled peas. I just feel so drained and queasy I want to sleep all the time. If I stay out of bed more than half an hour I feel dizzy and start vomiting again.
Run out of Ketostix so haven't checked ketones for few days, DH going to get more this eve.

Does anyone else worry about their baby getting enough nutrients/sugar when they can't keep much down? I'm worried about mine. I know they're supposed to take what they need from mother's fat stores but I was underweight when I got pregnant and have lost half a stone since.

eallison88 · 08/04/2015 18:39

caspian, I did indeed get into Manchester. Had a lovely productive day. That's why the evening and today were so naff.

I also worry about baby getting nutrients and growing, but at no point has any health care professional shown any concern for baby, so I'm taking that as a good thing!

Any experienced mums offer some none HG advice? On and off since yesterday evening, particularly 9-11am, I've had what I'd almost describe as contractions - the whole of mu lower abdomen tightens and feels like it's stretching and cramping, it all feels firm to the touch. Really very painful! No bleeding at all. I'm sort of assuming its due to womb growing to make more space for growing baby. can any one shed any further light?

Meerka · 08/04/2015 20:32

ealli i think you need to get that painful contracting checked out. Can you ring your MW or even the out of hours surgery? Braxton Hicks are not supposed to be painful.

caspian the baby is gnerally ok. if they take you into hospital they should check if you need extra vits and minerals; otherwise the baby does take what it needs from you. I have to admit I worried too and wonder, but I don't think much else can be done. It's not like we can eat anything more ...

About ondansetron I get the imprssion that some areas have guidelines on prescribing it due to cost and also individual doctors' nerves about meds in preg. Certainly some people have got it from their doctors on the NHS but as a last resort. Others have had to see a consultant first. Some people have managed to buy it privately yeah.

eallison88 · 08/04/2015 21:52

Hope everything went well meerka. I've got my 16 week apt with the MW tomorrow, so will mention it then. It all seems to have settled down a bit this evening, but I will mention it.

I must be in a very supportive nhs trust with regards meds and HG, as I went from diagnosis of HG on the Thurs eve to prescribed ondansetron on the Monday afternoon. (Admittedly, two hospital and 2 out of hours doc trips in the meantime!). I would really recommend going to an early pregnancy unit or maternity triage and seeing if they can help.

Hellohellohowareyou · 09/04/2015 07:23

I'm sure ondansetron is over 100 pounds for a months supply which is why some gp's are reluctant to prescribe it if they can give out alternatives. I was lucky and my gp was happy to prescribe it although I will say I found the side effects to be far worse than any other meds I've tried

Meerka · 09/04/2015 08:02

it did go well thank you and very little pain after th first surge. Very very sleepy though, think they gave me a big dose of anaesthetic. Just have to take it easy a few days. Funny thing: deeply relieved that well, I won't have to go through a third preg but it's also a touch bitter sweet, end of an era. But overall this was absolutely the right thing for our family.

ealli your trust sounds great, so does your doctor hello.

Hellohellohowareyou · 09/04/2015 08:49

She was meerka unfortunately she had moved to another practice now but I've found another lovely one who I will stick with!

Meerka · 09/04/2015 09:20

phew. I'm convinced that having a good doc during HG helps because at least you don't feel so alone...

CaspianSea · 09/04/2015 10:19

Meerka, hope you recover quickly from surgery and feel better soon! Flowers

Ealli, did you see midwife about the contraction-type pains? I don't have any advice about it, sorry. The closest thing I've had is if I get up suddenly or move quickly my lower abdomen sometimes goes into hard painful spasm but I think it's my abdominal wall contracting (rather than womb) and only lasts 30seconds. Hope everything's ok!

I'm feeling very positive this morning, as after a hellish few days I feel a lot better. I was throwing up repeatedly until 11pm last night but since then... nothing! Headache nearly gone and I haven't felt much nausea the last 2 hours which is such a blissful relief. Rang work, they advised not coming in today since there's a norovirus outbreak on my ward and several members of staff are off sick with it. They were worried I might have contracted it without realising and want me to stay off until clear of symptoms overnight (I pointed out this might be difficult as I rarely go a day without vomiting so they just said come back when you're sure it's just HG not norovirus). Has anyone had norovirus? Do symptoms differ from HG relapse?

LucindaE · 09/04/2015 14:15

Meerka Goodness,I missed you were going in. I do hope you are feeling OK? ThanksFlowers It's so nice of you to come on the thread in such a state. Hope all goes swimmingly for recovery.
eallison I so agree with Meerka, if only for reassurance, do check out the contractions to make sure it doesn't mean anything. You're not dehydrated, are you? I know MuddyLettuce had them when dehydrated.
Sorry for those who've had awful days.

Meerka · 09/04/2015 14:26

I am okay thanks :) they brought the op forward twice so in the end it was 24 hours after the pre-op appointment, which was a bit quick!

caspian very glad your work is telling you to stay off. No idea about norovirus sorry ...

LucindaE · 09/04/2015 17:38

Meerka Very good to have it over. Take it easy.
Caspian I don't know about that virus but best thing is to stay well away and I'm glad you have extra chances to rest as much as you can.

eallison88 · 10/04/2015 08:18

MW said to keep an eye on it, nd if it starts to involve pain in my back then to ring maternity triage and get checked out. Heard baby's heartbeat- amazing. Not dehydrated, MW checked ketonea:none! Woo hoo!

Also found out I'm O neg blood type, which means I have to be super careful with knocks to stomach etc, and have to have injections of something called anti d that a couple of points thru pregnancy. Cos of course, nothing about my pregnancy can be simple!

Meerka · 10/04/2015 08:25

O neg is good to know, it's a common problem ealli, the injections will sort it out. there's some info here

It used to be a big problem but now it's sorted out easily.

LucindaE · 10/04/2015 10:23

eallison I'm so glad contractions not serious, and yes, that negative blood thing can be sorted out now, thank goodness, I've heard of that. Glad negative ketones, well done.
Ihope Meerka is recovering well from the operation Flowers. If you conceived the first time using two forms of birth control, even if it took sme time for the next, no wonder you went in terror.
Caspian was it you who said that OH tried to feed you doughnut between vomiting spams? Well intentioned, but horrors Envy.
I only seem to have this very outdated list of due dates: -
I was looking through the thread. I note that our old friend Glossyflower was on it at the beginning and was going for it for a second time, and I hope she escaped the horrors of hypermesis. We've had a lot of new people on since this list was last updated.

Due Dates
GettheRedOut 26 April
MuddyLettuce 22 May
HexyQueen 1 June
Ovaltine 4 June

Hi not sure if this is really the right thread to be posting on but I've been in and out of hospital with hyperemesis since I was 5 weeks pregnant. It's been absolutely horrendous as you will all appreciate. What is really upsetting is that I had my 12 week scan yesterday and there was no heartbeat. I was still feeling and being sick so no signs of a miscarriage. I just feel really cheated that after going through so much sickness ( and everyone saying what a good sign sickness is) that it's ended this way.

eallison88 · 10/04/2015 11:42

stou, I'm so, so sorry for your loss. I can't imagine how difficult that must be. You and partner are in my prayers xx

Meerka · 10/04/2015 11:43

oh stou I'm so very sorry. Thinking of you Flowers.
