Can you cause complications in pregnancy by eating too much cake??

My not so lovely mother has made a few snide comments about how I should watch what i eat during this pregnancy for DC2 to avoid the baby being 'enormous again' (DS1 was 9lb4), and to to 'avoid getting diabetes'.

She is a pretty horrible woman most of the time so i know I should probably just ignore this, but her comments have stuck and they're worrying me.

i have a sweet tooth at the best of times...and this is not the best of times!! I am very hungry this pregnancy and a worried that i am eating too much/too much bad stuff and am gonna cause problems for myself and the baby.

Is this is legitimate concern, or should I just chill out?

For example, here is what I ate yesterday, which is pretty average at the moment (am 16 weeks and often feel ravenous!)

  • Bowl of shreddies with milk for breakfast at home.
  • Piece of toast with butter for second breakfast when i get to the office.
  • 1 slice of pumpkin seed crispbread as a snack mid morning (have recently brought a pack of these into the office to stop myself raiding the meeting room biscuits at 11am!).
  • A plate of veggie chilli with chips and salad for lunch from the office canteen
  • A can of pepsi max and a large white chocolate cookie mid afternoon Blush
  • A slice of toast at 6pm when giving DS his supper after nursery.
  • Smoked haddock fillet in a creme fraiche saude (homemade) with roasted potato, carrots and peas for dinner at 8pm.

Gawd....that's a lot of food isn't it, when it's all written down like that??

Anyone else being a total glutton? Am I going to make myself/the baby ill if I keep this up??

Do they use your booking bloods to test for GD? I've not had any feedback on mine yet and so should I chase/ ask? Taken bout 4weeks ago. Worried now my sugar intake could result in a prob so would like to know ASAP!

Eating sugar in pregnancy does not cause Gd, so don't worry about that.
It's a separate test at around 28 weeks. Some areas offer it to everyone, some only test people at high risk (high bmi, maternal age, family history etc).

I had gd in 2 of my pregnancies and I don't have a sweet tooth at all, I'm small and size 10 so not over weight. I never ate anything sweet really.

My sister complete opposite ate everything with sugar put on loads of weight (which she lost) and never got it.

Eating sugar doesn't cause gd it's to do with something not breaking something down in your body (really should no more)

Eat your cake and bloody well enjoy.

P.s big babies are just as gorgeous as little babies infant I love the squishness :)

Ok well I have had my bowl of shreddies at home this morning. On my way into work now: instead of getting toast in the canteen when I arrive for breakfast #2, I am going to get a small portion of scrambled egg and a quorn sausage from the hot counter instead. That's all protein, right?? Hopefully that will keep me nice and full up until lunchtime with no need for snacks.

Not sure what's on the lunch menu in the canteen today but I will be trying to choose something with protein and veg in it.

Also I have decided to swap my mid afternoon can of pop and a cake for a small bottle of sparkling water and a piece of fruit. It's gonna be hard to resist that sugar craving (what can I say, I am a filthy sugar addict!) but am gonna try.

Your mum is most likely talking crap. If you are hungry eat. Yes, there is a lot of refined sugar in your diet - I would assume the risk of thrush is bigger than that of GD. Is there a family history of diabetes?
Some people have big babies. This has nothing to do with the amount of cake you eat.
Most of mine were around 10 lb and some women put on more weight than others. I suppose the questions are whether you are obese before getting pregnant ant whether you loose the post baby fat after the first year or so. Your body will create stores for breast feeding.
Your mum probably has unresolved issues of her own regarding food and pregnancy.

I find snacks like cheese and full fat yoghurts keep me fuller for longer.

Remember you're growing a human, creating and pumping a third more blood than usual, carrying extra weight and probably not sleeping very well. Give yourself a break.
