C Section, how long did your DP take off work?

Hi all

How long did your DP take off work after your C Section?

I thought 2 weeks paternity leave plus 1 week annual leave would suffice but someone told us today that they took 5 weeks off work. Just wondered what was the norm.

Thanks xx

2 weeks paternity but 3 wks will be just right

Haggisfish · 02/02/2015 19:08

Two weeks both times.

SergeantJarhead · 02/02/2015 19:10

Hi OP, 2 weeks paid paternity and two weeks annual leave (paid).

My FIL went back to work after 3 days, so it differs :)

Showy · 02/02/2015 19:10

DH could only afford 1 week and I was in labour for 3 days so only 4 days post cs. He went back to work when DS was 4 days old and DD started reception for the first time. It was a busy day! A new school run, new baby and it all worked out fine.

Do you have other help locally if recovery isn't straightforward?

cathpip · 02/02/2015 19:14

Dh went back to work after 10 days, my other two dc watched a lot of DVDs till I was more mobile :)

Mymumstillreadsmymail · 02/02/2015 20:04

My dh took two days a week for 5 weeks, I found this worked really well.

MaelstromOfLunacy · 02/02/2015 20:05

1week - all we could afford. I was back at work after two!

dashoflime · 02/02/2015 20:06

2 weeks. It was fine.

trilbydoll · 02/02/2015 20:07

Two weeks, and someone came each day for the third week to make me lunch.

HesBeenAVeryNaughtyBoy · 02/02/2015 20:12

Three weeks, two would have been fine but I got a womb infection that set in after ten days so knocked me back a bit. I'm sure even factoring in small complications three weeks is a good amount. On a side note I'm a SAHM and my DH realised how much work I did around the house when he had to take care of it all, silver linings and all that.

WeCameWeSawWePlayedConkers · 02/02/2015 20:15

I would say Showy's recovery is exceptional and I certainly couldn't have managed without dh after a few days and taken dd to school (with either of my two sections). I genuinely don't know how you managed to go back to work after two weeks maelstrom Shock I was still bleeding heavily and not able to lift things.

Dh had two weeks paternity then my mum came and stayed for a five days and DH worked those days - think he then worked 3 days the following week and then back full time.
Same for both dc.

Don't forget that despite the end result being a baby you are still undergoing 'major abdominal surgery' (midwife's words not mine).

WidowWadman · 02/02/2015 20:15

First time round he took 2 weeks paternity leave, which thanks to the Christmas period were 3 weeks in real time. 2nd time round he had just lost his job and it took him a few months to find another, otherwise it would have been the standard 2_weeks

GnomeDePlume · 02/02/2015 21:16

1 week with DC1 after an EMCS, though this was pure luck that she arrived at the start of a holiday.

DC2 arrived far less conveniently despite being an ELCS so DH was straight back to work within a couple of days.

DH was made redundant when DC3 arrived so I went back after 4 weeks.

That was in the 'good' old days before paternity leave and when DH's holidays were fixed.

Just enjoy what is possible and dont worry about what other people do.

MaelstromOfLunacy · 02/02/2015 23:28

I'm hoping to have a bit longer next time WeCame Smile I'm a freelance drama teacher so could sit a lot while the kids ran around pretending to be trees etc, and it was only a couple of days per week. Like Gnome said OP, everyone is different and I think I was exceptionally lucky to feel as well as I did.

HaveYouTriedARewardChart · 02/02/2015 23:33

Do you have other children? If so you might need a bit of help for week 3, depending on many things of course!

MouseInTheSkirting · 03/02/2015 02:58

I had a section nearly three weeks ago. My partner took two days and two weeks. It was fine, he could have gone back last week and I'd have been fine without him. The first few days were really hard work for me but by the end of a week I was able to get about with very little pain.

Cleanbean · 03/02/2015 03:05

DH took a week off with DC1 and four days with DC2. It was fine.

Want2bSupermum · 03/02/2015 03:44

So here is what we did...

DH took one day off for DS and DD's arrival. With DD I was really sick so he took the following day off and worked from my room. With DS he took the day off. DS was delivered at 911am and DH left at 1pm to go for his MRI at 2pm. Dd was at daycare and he picked her up and out her to bed to have babysitter look after her from 7-9 when he came back and visited me each night. On the Thursday night all my stuff was packed and ready to go at 7pm and we were discharged at 830 to arrive home at 9pm.

The following two weeks DH wasn't able to take time off but dd was at daycare so not a huge problem.

Want2bSupermum · 03/02/2015 03:47

Pressed post too soon....

DO NOT DO WHAT WE DID!

Take the leave/vacation whatever. I had a fab medical team, private room with 24hr nursery while I was in hospital. I also was ff and not bf.

JoandMax · 03/02/2015 03:51

2 weeks paternity with both. My mum came to stay for week 3 with DS2 as DH had to go overseas and they were worried about me being left alone and lifting DS1 (20 months). I would of been fine and felt ok but having my mum look after me was amazing!!!

Hurr1cane · 03/02/2015 05:23

Nothing, he didn't take any time off work at all because he couldn't afford it and he wasn't there long enough for paternity leave, plus it was a 0 hour contract anyway. I didn't have any other support but we had no choice.

GentlyBenevolent · 03/02/2015 05:39

For DC 1 and 2 my DH took no time off work at all, apart from while they were actually being born (ELCS so we knew roughly the time the operations would be). With both, he went in to work for a couple of hours in the afternoon. This is because they were both born on the cusp of the exam season (he's an academic) and before the advent of a right to paternity leave. With DC2 though, my sister came and stayed with us for a week. With DC3, it was August and DH had 3 weeks off work and my sister was here for 2 but it wasn't actually necessary, particularly.

Mutley77 · 03/02/2015 06:16

TBH I can't remember with DCs 1 & 2 - probably 1-2 weeks each. With DC3, which I can remember!, DH took about 3 days off, then my mum and dad came to stay for 2 weeks to help with the older DC, school runs etc. Then when they left DH had another week off (needed to drive DC to school which I couldn't do), then it was 2 weeks school holidays, but luckily GP signed me off as fit to drive on day 2 of the holidays so we didn't end up being housebound :)

I only really needed DH for the fourth week as we had just moved so didn't have the contacts in place for helping with school run!

Tranquilitybaby · 03/02/2015 06:56

Mine did two straight weeks off, then three days off the third week and two the fourth week, to give me a chance to do a few things for myself, but know he'd be off the day after. Worked really well actually.

Alwaysinahurrynow · 03/02/2015 07:09

DS1 - husband was home for a week after I got out. I then had family to drag for 10 days.
DS2 - husband couldn't take any time off so mum came to stay for 3/4 nights a week for 5 weeks as couldn't push double buggy to get DS1 home from nursery. I also got mastitis twice and was unable to do anything for a week each time. Much harder recovery second time.

If your husband can take more time off then great especially if you already have other children.
