Please tell me I'm not alone in this! I cannot for the life of me get rid of my heartburn. It happens at the same time every night, just before I go to bed. When I lay down it gets worse so I end up sitting up for ages trying to wait for it to settle. Is there any quick fix for this? I'm at my wits end Shock

Doctor prescribed me ranitidine which seems to be working most of the time. I also use Gaviscon (aniseed flavour) and milk. I avoid spicy food, cheese, citrus fruit/juice and fatty stuff (all of which I love!). I find smaller meals helps but need to eat more frequently also avoid drinking lots of water with meals -sip it inbetween meals and if you need a drink with meal have milk instead.
If it comes on at night, sit up in bed or get up for a bit. If you can sleep upright even better!

lemon juice is actually alkaline. plain water used to give me heart burn. A few drops of lemon juice stopped that dead. pineapple is also good.

Tranquilitybaby · 29/01/2015 13:48

Following with interest. Ive progresses from normal Gaviscon to the advanced, but even that isn't helping much now at 19+3 weeks, so I know it's inly going to get worse.

Bit nervous of taking stronger medication, but some of you say the tableys are safe in pregnancy?

RavioliOnToast · 29/01/2015 14:03

I scoff a few rennies whenever I get it to take the edge off and then take sainsburys indigestion tablets. you take them with water not chew them and that seems to help

CarbeDiem · 29/01/2015 14:18

The best stuff I ever had prescribed while PG was Maalox - kept in the fridge until needed and instant relief every time. It's like a million crushed rennies in each mouthful.

I also was going to mention lemon juice - it sounds like hell, I know but it really does work.

Has there been some new research done with regard to Omeprazole/lanzoprazole? The reason I ask is because I was switched to zantac while TTC (around 2 years ago) and told there wasn't enough info available to say they're safe to take.

Mine is horrible at 30 weeks now :( gaviscon does not seem to be doing anything milk helps but then if I eat or drink something its back straight away feeling horrible at the moment :(

Violettadoesthekondo · 29/01/2015 20:05

All these things only treat the symptoms rather then deal with the real issue.

Pico2 · 29/01/2015 22:50

In my case the "real issue" was being pregnant. The heartburn went as soon as DD arrived.

Do you have any alternative suggestions, other than wheat intolerance Violetta?

Violettadoesthekondo · 30/01/2015 07:13

It was wheat for my my friend and myself. It was my midwife who suggested going wheat free to cure it. Maybe there are other foods that cause it but you'd have to experiment yourself to find out.

Violettadoesthekondo · 30/01/2015 07:22

Heart burn was unbearable for me and initially. Very painful. After going wheat free I only got it back after giving in and eating a bit of pizza or cake or what ever occasionally.

Post pregnancy the heartburn went away completely and I ate wheat again. However now I am more aware of my body now are realise that I feel bloated after wheat. So it doesn't completely agree with me but symptoms are subtle.

Aretepetite · 30/01/2015 14:23

I found Maalox the best to glug from the bottle. Keep it in the fridge. Wink

CarbeDiem · 30/01/2015 21:17

It's like Angels pouring ice down your throat isn't it? Aret :)

Churchillian · 30/01/2015 22:07

Omeprazole is completely safe in pregnancy. If you're really suffering - I got heartburn/acid indigestion from anything I ate or drank and couldn't sleep for hours - it's the only thing that works. Please don't suffer needlessly.

Tranquilitybaby · 30/01/2015 22:39

That's good to know, thanks Church

Idratherbetheboss · 30/01/2015 22:51

I have a hiatus hernia so suffer from acid reflux/heart burn fairly often. Being pregnant with this was hell on earth

I take lanzoperazole usually, but did stop when pregnant and switched to ranitidine which definitely helped

Nowadays(not pregnant) an apple really helps although I'm not sure why.
