Ovarian cyst after 1st trimester - anyone else?

Hi Ladies,

I've worried myself sick this morning as I was due to have my ovaries scanned. I'm currently 13w+1 and was treated for breast cancer a year ago. At my nuchal scan last week the sonographer told me that I have a cyst on my right ovary which I assumed is normal from the ovulation. She said however it is larger than normal. Knowing that breast and ovarian cancers are very good friends I obviously was very concerned and spoke to my consultant who immediately referred me to an ovaries scan.

Thank god, the doc said it looks benign and although it is bigger than it should be at this stage of pregnancy (it's has grown a little bit since my 5wk scan), he still expects it to go away by itself and proposed to take another look at it in 4-6 weeks. Even though I'm hugely relieved it does not look malignant and it is not giving me any symptoms, I am wondering if anyone else had ovarian cysts past the first trimester and what the outcome was??

I had one with DS. I had a few more scans but they wasn't overly concerned about it. It was still there after the birth but had disappeared by my 6 week check.

hope it all goes well for you

I had one. It was checked on every scan but disappeared after the birth.
I wasn't worried as the consultant said they are very common.

I had a cyst when I was pregnant too, it was causing some discomfort which was why I was sent for the scan. We were told that it was extremely common and if I'm honest I never gave it a second thought! I presume it went away on its own.

I'm also in remission (different cancer). Good luck with your pregnancy Grin

I had one (it got picked up at my 12 week scan). By 20 weeks it had diminished so now it's just known as a "dominant follicle" (whatever that means!).

It did play on my mind but the sonographer didn't seem too concerned. Obviously your situation is different to mine though OP.

Thank you ladies for your responses, everything very reassuring. Good to know these things really go away by themselves, let's hope mine will at least stop growing and won't cause any pain. Paulinefowler, thanks and happy to hear you've beaten the beast too!

I had a cyst at 12 week scan (I gather it was big because sonographer said "did you know you have a cyst?), it wasn't mentioned at 20 week scan. Fast forward three years, I was having mid cycle bleeding and was sent for a scan - big cyst. A year later I had a 8cm endometriosis cyst taken out.

If you are worried about cancer there is a blood test they can do to check for an ovarian cancer marker, I would ask about that.

How big is it OP? I had a corpus luteum cyst in both (successful) pregnancies, and both times it was over 7cm in diameter. They'd both gone by 20 weeks.

OMGmetoo thanks for your message. I did ask and they mentioned this blood test. However different 2 doctors told me that the values they normally check for cancer marker are normally increased during pregnancy, so it might cause me even more concern based on nothing. That's why they said they'll only do it if the scan shows smth worrying and it didn't. So I'll just wait for now and see how the cyst looks at the next check-up.
