Probably a daft question, but are these milkshkes safe during pregnancy, does anyone know please?
I know you shouldn't have "Mr Whippy" ice-cream and not sure if the milkshakes are made up of this or not.Dh is just about to pop to the drive thru.
TIA.

think they are the same sort of thing -- semi frozen milky stuff....if milk in it then i would probably not ...ask at the driv thru!

2MwahHaHaHappy · 17/10/2006 18:42

I don't know, but mine's a beanburger and fries

binker · 17/10/2006 18:43

mmm- I WOULD TRY TO AVOID THEM i THINK...

binker · 17/10/2006 18:44

...sorry about the type !

bubbaOOOOOOO · 17/10/2006 18:47

Boohoo-really fancied one aswell.Think I'll send him to Burger King instead-their burgers are nicer....and probably more fattening too.

Thanks.

make your own milkshake with proper ice cream and stuff

or have a scoop of vanilla ice cream in lemonade - sounds gross but is actually lurvely!

bubbaOOOOOOO · 17/10/2006 18:50

Ooh..like an ice cream soda-yummy.

JodieG1 · 17/10/2006 18:55

No I don't think they are safe to have.

Gwu · 17/10/2006 19:03

I've been having the occasional McD's milkshake and ice cream. I think McD's milkshake is ok and McD's ice cream.

I also had pate, Mr Whipee ice cream and rare beef and duck during this pregnancy. Yes, I was completely stupid and irresponsible (I ate these things during early pregnancy when I was convinced I was miscarrying).

JodieG1 · 17/10/2006 19:10

The mcds ones aren't safe as far as I know as they use similar machines to ice cream vans and the ice cream can make you ill because of the way it's stored.

zombiebridepenny · 17/10/2006 19:55

Hi bubbaOOOOOOO
I have been on a simular thread to this a while back and we agreed that MD milkshakes were a no go because of the risk of listeria it is different from other food poisons because it grows at fridge temperature - rather than room temperature like other food borne illnesses.
Machines at MD are unlikley to be properly cleaned out. All ready meals carry the risk of listeria too, but at least you can kill the bug by heating up the food.

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 17/10/2006 19:57

ahh well - I craved them like crazy when I was pg with dS2 - everytime I walked past I had one !

bubbaOOOOOOO · 17/10/2006 20:35

What would I do without Mumsnet.

Ended up having a McDonalds without the milkshake and thoroughly enjoyed it,although I'll probably be hungry again in an hour or so.

SecondhandRose · 17/10/2006 20:44

I think the bug is listeria that grows in this sort of thing and if the machines aren't cleaned properly then the bugs multiply so sorry yes I suppose you'd better avoid that too.

Is there much you can eat these days when you're pregnant!

N1SEXYTING · 17/10/2006 20:50

OOps, i've had quite a few of Burger Kings, absolutely love their chocolate shakes

shhhh · 17/10/2006 22:15

I was told by my mw not to have them. Something to do with the fact that the machines may not be cleaned 100% and listeria can build up. Best avoided imo. Typically though as soon as I was expecting mc'd's brought out the new Rolo Milkshake...

shhhh · 17/10/2006 22:18

BTW don't bother asking the staff..! Dh cringed when I asked when expecting dd..its took them ages to find out and in the end noone had an idea..! Mmmm not good service esp after all thats been in the press about them and the content of certain foods..

eidsvold · 18/10/2006 03:46

the machines may not be cleaned properly and so any premixed soft serve ice cream is a risk - of listeria.

As someone else said - make your own at home. I jsut use tonnes of icecream and not much milk - like a thick shake.

mojomands · 18/10/2006 09:31

I've had cravings for milkshakes from MDs and their Ice Cream and for the first 3/4 months and had a fair few! I also craved Tuna mayo sandwiches and ate lots of them too.

CurrantBun · 18/10/2006 11:46

I've eaten loads of tuna during my pregnancy so far. I think you can have up to two medium-sized cans per week, which I don't think I've exceeded, but I couldn't cut tuna out altogether. It's great in pasta sauces and I do have it in jacket potatoes and sandwiches too.

I've also eaten prawn mayonnaise sandwiches quite a few times. And ready-prepared bags of salad, carbonara sauce made with raw eggs (the heat of the pasta does cook them though), some peanuts, ready-prepared coleslaw and potato salad and the odd glass of wine. If you stuck rigidly to the "foods to avoid" list you wouldn't eat anything, which surely must be more harmful to the baby than the occasional lapse from the straight and narrow?

I have completely cut out caffeine though - easy for me as I don't drink coffee and only ever have two cups of tea per day (now decaff!), and I've tried to avoid most of the things I shouldn't eat, but sometimes you just honestly forget.

shhhh · 18/10/2006 15:26

cb, you rule breaker

CurrantBun · 18/10/2006 16:44

I know, I'm such a rebel.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 18/10/2006 16:45

I have heard they have lard in them!

gegs73 · 18/10/2006 16:47

Whats up with shop bought coleslaw, I thought that was OK?! Do I need to stop eating it?

Ilovemyboy · 18/10/2006 16:59
