Hot Drinks?

Other than decaf tea and coffee what are people drinking? I thought I'd found a lovely ginger tea but it had liquorice root in it and that's apparently a no no. Help me please, the decaf tea at work is Tetley and that's rubbish and doesn't taste of tea! Confused

Err...fruit tea, occasional hot chocolate/horlicks/ovaltine, honey and lemon??

I'll probably get flamed for this but when I was pregnant I couldn't switch to decaf. I just don't think it tastes right! I don't drink a huge amount of tea anyway, 3 or 4 cups a day max but if I have one Give me a proper cuppa!

DoctorDonnaNoble · 13/01/2015 06:39

I drink a lot of hot drinks so probably need to go decaf Hmm
I was surprised that Twinings Ginger Tea had liquorice root in it as it is marketed as settling. I didn't even know I shouldn't have liquorice root but thought I better check ingredients - oh well the quest for a decent decaf tea goes on....

I'm a tea snob and find decaf tea in general appalling. However, PG tips decaf is the same as the real thing (but only good if you like the taste of PG I guess!).

Hot chocolate (some caffeine here though). Apple or lemon tea? Hot water with slice of lime/lemon?

DoctorDonnaNoble · 13/01/2015 06:45

I can cope with PG if I use two bags for a cup so may get that - thank you Smile

Can I recommend Clipper Decaf tea please. Your bog standard decaf is decaffienated using petrochemicals!! Clipper is decaffienated using natural methods and honestly tastes like normal tea.

I am generally drinking warm Lenin water at the moment. Using a straw to protect my teeth. Hot water from kettle, squirt of lemon juice from the bottle. Lovely.

sebsmummy1 · 13/01/2015 06:47

Lemon!! Not Lenin lol

DoctorDonnaNoble · 13/01/2015 06:50

Lenin water is intriguing! Wink
I shall certainly look for clipper tea then.

My doctor told me last time that the caffeine guidelines are more aimed at people drinking gallons of coke, and that the amount in tea shouldn't be a problem. I cut down to about five cups a day maximum, but mostly drank peppermint or green tea with lemon (I don't normally like green tea but the clipper lemon one is lovely). Same this time around, though I'm fancying the healthy teas less and drinking more hot chocolate.

DoctorDonnaNoble · 13/01/2015 06:53

As a coffee and Irn-Bru fiend, I'm trying to be on my best behaviour. I'm the sort of person who thinks 200mg of caffeine doesn't sound a lot and I'd rather save it for chocolate!

I make my self a mocha with hot chocolate and decaf coffee so its not got as much caffeine in.
I like hot chocolate rest of the time, twingings berry mix tea or just decaf tea for me I like Lidl and Morrisons bye label decaf tea.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 13/01/2015 07:33

I'm drinking coffee. Only have one or two cups a day so not changing to decaf. Sometimes have a cup of green tea and lemon too.

ShootTheMoon · 13/01/2015 07:37

2-4 cups of regular tea (Assam), and also Camomile and Honey (which is delicious), Ginger and Lemon (soothing), and peppermint tea. Lots of water too. I am a thirsty person!

skiingcat · 13/01/2015 07:39

I've not changed to decaffeinated tea but I try to alternate between tea and hot water. Hot water is surprisingly nice...though I have been mocked for drinking it.

aliciagardner · 13/01/2015 07:40

Decaf yorkshire tea is brilliant, tastes almost the same.

Sonics · 13/01/2015 07:54

I second the recommendation for Yorkshire decaf. It's the best one I've tried - almost like the real thing

cuphat · 13/01/2015 07:54

Redbush. It's naturally caffeine free.

sebsmummy1 · 13/01/2015 07:59

Donna, the Clipper tea I mentioned was in my local Tesco so should be easy to get your hands on.

I've completely gone off tea/coffee so drinking hot blackcurrent.

StetsonsAreCool · 13/01/2015 08:40

I thought coke was comparable in terms of caffeine, but it was the tonnes of sugar you want to avoid?

Either way, I drank 3-4 cups of normal tea a day during my last pg (3wk old baby now). Everything was ok.

Eltonjohnsflorist · 13/01/2015 08:50

There is less caffeine in a can of coke than a cup of tea (I was amazed to find that out!)

I only strictly avoided caffeine for the first trimester. Yy to Yorkshire tea decaff, it's the only decent one. In a shop (Nero, Starbucks etc) decaff isn't too bad if you have a regular filter coffee or flat white (I prefer something milky for protein)

Now I have about 3/4 shop bought caffeine drinks a week and probably 3/4 full caffeine teas. I try and keep tea decaff but it's a struggle when other people have made it, but if I feel I've had a little too much I cut back.

fortywinx · 13/01/2015 09:08

As far as I know there's about 40mg of caffeine in a can of cola, compared to about 75-100mg in tea or instant coffee, and more again in "proper" filter coffee!

I've just been having decaff tea if I'm at home (although I massively went off hot drinks in first trimester anyway), but I'm not a big tea/coffee drinker, so if I have been at a friend's house or something similar, I have had a normal one and just made sure I haven't gone over the 200mg a day limit.

Things I've tried as hot drinks, blackcurrant squash, honey and lemon juice, fruit teas etc.

Slongette · 13/01/2015 09:14

I've been drinking either Rooibos, hot water and lemon or sweet rhubarb tea as I'd gone off tea in the first trimester.

I've got over that now and have a couple of normal teas during the day then switch to water or the rooibos.

tuffgingernut · 13/01/2015 09:25

I drink a lot of tea and have worked my way through several different brands. I think Typhoo decaff is excellent and, as an added bonus, it's very cheap. Smile

Beggy15 · 13/01/2015 09:35

Nescafé decaf is safe as it uses the water method to remove caffeine. I think I'm going off hot drinks I currently can't bare the thought of them
