Anyone else on a (pregnancy) health kick?

I just did my first jog of 2015, and my first pregnant jog!

Not going to lie, feeling slightly exhilerated and smug, possibly more than a 1-mile trot to the shops really merits!

Im 18+5, was a regular jogger/gym-goer/cyclist before pregnancy, but morning sickness plus a complicated house move basically wiped out exercise for the 1st trimester (and then some). Now, following all guidelines to take things gently etc, Im determined to get a level of fitness ticking over, to feel primed for birth & motherhood!

Is anyone else getting back into exercise with a bump in tow?

I have been so ratty-I'm finding that exercise helps a bit to de-rat so that's always a good reason to do something!
It's nice to feel like eating healthy food again after spending several months obsessed with sugar.

Tryingreallyhard84 · 06/01/2015 10:43

well, gym may go out the window in favour of a walk tonight. slept weirdly last night and woke up with the most agonising cramp! I can't seem to shake it. I'll go out at lunch and see if a walk helps alleviate it some. if it does, I'll still go gym or for a run.

once I get my new swimming costume, I'll be able to swim it off.

Letmeeatcakecakecake · 06/01/2015 11:46

Went for a swim yesterday, was chatting to a lady in the changing rooms in my bikini and she told me I looked amazing, so left after 40 lengths feeling doubly smug.

Went gym today to weight lift and had some nutty old woman notice that I'm Arabic and try desperately to teach me the language then burst out crying asking if any of my family would like to buy her furniture as she's desperate to return to the Lebanon and begging to help her, so left feeling quite scared :-(

JennyOfOldstones · 06/01/2015 12:56

Haha letme you are obviously one of those people that other people can't help talking to! The first one is nice, the second a bit less so...

Any recommendations for maternity swimwear? I just want a normal sporty type one piece?

Letmeeatcakecakecake · 06/01/2015 13:58

I really attract all the nutters! Can't think why!

I've just been wearing a normal bikini to be honest, my boobs just about fit in the top and the bottoms are tie side so they seem fine for now. I'll probably look for something once my belly button pokes out of my bump just looks all heavy and stretched! Have you looked on ASOS? that's been the only place I've seen any that I would wear anyway! Xx

catsofa · 07/01/2015 01:34

Any recommendations for maternity swimwear?

I'm going for ebay, since maternity stuff won't fit me for long and suits on there are a fraction of the price because of being secondhand.

I need a maternity one myself as although they're stretchy mine is struggling to adapt to my shape now a bit at 24 weeks, and the available holes for getting into it are becoming a little small for the amount of belly and boob I have to get through them!

I think one with a tie-up halterneck might be easier to get in and out of, since it'll have a very large opening with the ties undone, and be much like putting on knickers... which itself is becoming harder than it used to be because of the difficulty of reaching my feet...

Tryingreallyhard84 · 07/01/2015 07:32

I got a slazenger one from sports direct for £8.99. Normal sport one. no frills, no bells just good for swimming.

PerpetualStudent · 07/01/2015 10:18

Im joining my gym today ladies! (Im not one of these January joiners usually, just moved house is my excuse)
Thanks for the sports direct tip Trying, Im eying up aqua-areobics classes - anyone every tried them?

I went to normal Aqua aerobics once and it was full of old ladies, I really enjoyed it though! Very gentle. There is an aquanatal class at my local pool I might go to, would be good for meeting people too. Good tip about sports direct I might just get a cheap normal suit in a bigger size.

Tryingreallyhard84 · 07/01/2015 11:39

I'm eyeing up aqua aerobics as well. local pool at the top of my road does it so there's no excuse. save for the fact it's on quite late..I say late, maybe 7-8. Being pregnant has bought my bedtime earlier. Wink

I'll go if you go perpetual Grin

catsofa · 07/01/2015 11:50

Oh wow thanks, I've wanted to do aqua aerobics but thought it would be all jumping around sweatily for an hour without a break like my friend does in normal aerobics classes. I don't have the puff for that even when I'm not pregnant! But full of old ladies sounds like much more my style, phew! I will sign up imediately.

Letmeeatcakecakecake · 07/01/2015 11:54

I would thoroughly recommend aqua aerobics! I go 2ce a week!

It's usually full of old ladies too so you won't feel judged!

Shantotto · 07/01/2015 12:17

Looking for some advice for someone who doesn't do any exercise at all! I want to start now, I'm 10 weeks. I uses to cycle commute about an hour a day, but the London streets are hideous even when I'm not baby anxious and after being cut up by a builders van and almost having a nasty accident I'm off cycling!

I was considering aqua aerobics - I don't know of an ante natal one near me but I could look into it.

Anyone got suggestions for something easy I could try at home? Not able to much running as I've got dodgy knee joints and it's painful.

Thanks!

Tryingreallyhard84 · 07/01/2015 13:09

shantotto - YouTube can become your friend here. there some great stuff on there. yoga/pilates vids are great as you can get pregnancy ones. avoid ab/core work until after 12 weeks (at least that's what I was told but may be total tosh). same with the Internet in general, loads of great little sites. I'm at work now but will see if I can post a couple later?

make sure you look for pregnancy specific stuff as this reduces too much core work and time on your back (then again, I'm sure time on our backs is how we all ended up in this situation in the first place Grin )

Letmeeatcakecakecake · 07/01/2015 13:13

Don't judge me- give results with lucy a try!

Shantotto · 07/01/2015 13:57

Thanks both! Trying - I'll have a dig around later but if you can find any links that look good I'd appreciate it!

Letme- thanks, I'll look that up!

CBo79 · 07/01/2015 15:08

Excellent thread! I too am determined to remain active throughout my pregnancy. Lucky in that I had a relatively easy first trimester - just very tired - but I mainly went swimming as was worried about the risk of miscarriage with running. I'm now 17 weeks and over the past month I've really been enjoying getting back into running. Have to be careful not to go too flat out but iIm listening to my body and all seems fine so far.

Exercise is really helping keep me calm, happy and is a great thing for when i'm worrying about something!

Thanks also for the mat swimsuit recommendations. I'm still wearing my normal suit but it's bit of a strain now...

I intend to exercise until, well, I can't!

PerpetualStudent · 07/01/2015 15:52

Just emailed my local gym about exercise during pregnancy (didn't want to pay to join up if they where going to freak out by a preggers lady on the bike machines etc!) and the customer relations manager is a qualified doula! She's all like 'Yeah, come down, we'll look after you!'
Colour me impressed

Is there any risk of miscarriage with running? Just did a quick google, but this old NHS report was the only reputable reference I could find: www.nhs.uk/news/2007/September/Pages/Atentativelinkbetweenexerciseandmiscarriage.aspx Anyone else heard/read stuff on this?

Hi Ladies, I would love your help. I am launching a new health, fitness and well being guide for pregnancy, giving you daily motivation and advice for fitness, food, emotional wellbeing and beauty. I'd love to know what you think so far. Its a work in progress... www.baby2body.com Thank you so much! I hope I can help keep you fit!

ClearlyOpaque · 07/01/2015 17:13

I bought this swimsuit and got it delivered to my local Waitrose. It fits quite well apart from being a bit long and worked well in the pool. (I can't seem to do front crawl in a bikini, never have)

JennyOfOldstones · 07/01/2015 19:50

Good tip about looking on the Internet I have an Erin O Brien dvd but it might get a bit repetitive. Would be good to mix up with Pilates maybe. There aren't that many pregnancy DVDs out there, I wish Jillian Michaels would do one.

catsofa · 07/01/2015 19:55

Hmm, I've only just read that I'm not supposed to do breaststroke in pregnancy because of the risk of PGP. Anyone know if it means it can cause PGP, or if it only makes it worse if you already have it? Breaststroke is the only stroke I can do!

ememsmum · 07/01/2015 20:53

I was a regular gym-goer throughout my last pregnancy and from 8w postpartum. This time around I have been well knocked off my perch with nausea. Managed 3 gym sessions from weeks 7-14. Then had awful sinus infection. Decided to start anew last Saturday (at 18+1). My usual routine is quick 30min session 2x per week after work: 20 mins cardio then 10 mins weights/core. I do a bit more on a Saturday. Am taking things slow for the next couple of wks. I have a longstanding lower back problem (sacroiliac joint dysfunction anyone?) so have to be really careful what I do.

Last time I went to aquanatal from week 20. Not much of a workout, more of a social thing to do. Am hoping to go again however it clashes with DH's gym night so will have to go alternate weeks. Tbh that is fine with me. It's not that great for my back either!

I bought a very cheap tankini thing from Next last pg. Horrifically ill-filling around the boobies and has now gone see-through. I was going to buy the Slazenger swimsuit but then decided to treat myself to a jojo tankini from their latest sale. Hasn't arrived yet but have high hopes for it!

Perpetual I imagine the only risks with running, or inded any other exercise, is going at too high intensity and overheating. Paula Radcliffe ran throughout her 2 pgs with no issues (except hard labour!).
