What is the criteria for consultant led care?

Just wondering who qualifies for, or is entitled to, consultant led care during pregnancy.

I hear you get it if you've had 3 or more consecutive miscarriages.

But not sure what other criteria there is. How about BMI, weight of previous children at birth, delivery method, diabetes, types of complications, etc...

Is there an NHS checklist anywhere?

GD, significant family history of SIDS and raised stress levels due to dh being in Afghanistan for whole pregnancy.

BigCatFace · 19/12/2014 07:44

High BMI and mental health diagnosis for me. All has been well and 32 weeks now :)

juneavrile · 19/12/2014 07:59

Ivf twins - but have only seen consultant once in entire pregnancy. When I raised this was told that all was going so well I need not see one, which is fair enough I suppose.

Hough bmi and ds having low fluid at birth xx

Ridingthestorm · 19/12/2014 11:19

Intrauterine growth retardation, low amniotic fluid, failing placenta, placenta abruption, rare reaction to the induction led to violent contractions and a small uterine tear in theatre during my EMCS, meant second time round I am consultant led. I get two extra growth scans that is it.
So far (26+6) everything seems okay except I haven't grown in. Month and fear I may be leaking fluid again. Last time I was oblivious but this time, I sort of know what to expect if it is happening. Luckily baby girl is moving around absolutely fine and have MW on Xmas eve and growth scan a week later.

Number3cometome · 19/12/2014 11:27

Mine is high blood pressure, Eclamptic seizures in labour and pre-eclampsia in second labour, 2 c-sections.

I also have a full spinal lumbar fusion and have permanent heart medication because of the above.

So sorry to all of those ladies who have lost babies Flowers

FizzyBubbly · 19/12/2014 11:34

I'm hypothyroid which is one reason why I'm under consultant, although all they are doing is monitoring my blood test results. Main reason is I had a 2.5 litre PPH with DD and needed a blood transfusion, so need to give birth in hospital rather than MLU incase it happens again

wonkylegs · 19/12/2014 11:41

Mines due having Rheumatoid arthritis + all the effects of the drugs for RA. Next pregnancy will be a c-section too due to hip problems.

Jackiebrambles · 19/12/2014 11:48

I'm not sure whether I will be yet. I'm 13 weeks now.

My first baby was an EMCS and with this pregnancy I've got a low anterior placenta near my c-section scar and group strep b (or whatever it is!) so I reckon I might be.

MrsLovell · 19/12/2014 13:26

High BMI, family history of diabeates and the start of varacose veins for me. I get 2 10 minute appointments with consaultant and an extra scan at 32 weeks, everything else is midwife appointments, oh and they told me had no choice but to give birth on the Ward and not midwife lead unit. But I'm hoping they might change thier mind about that nearer the time as there is absolutely nothing wrong with me.

naty1 · 19/12/2014 14:05

Im not
Though hypothyroid on very low dose. Gp is supposed to monitor but last blood test has come back hyper slightly so not sure.
Ivf pg and last time did see cons for a pointless- is everything ok meeting.
Would like cons to monitor thyroid though

lunar1 · 19/12/2014 14:12

Ovarian cyst plus severe he. I also had a high bmi but where I am that alone wouldn't have triggered it.

TheBookofRuth · 19/12/2014 14:17

I was because my mum had had a thrombosis in pregnancy, and because I'd had some cervical cells removed. Second pregnancy I had all that plus was trying for a VBAC after an EMCS with DD, who was also a quite a big baby.

Mumraathenoisylion · 19/12/2014 14:20

I had consultant care because I had a large chunk of my cervix cut away, previous polyps and then when I was just about to be discharged to normal care - polyhydramnios.

dayspringjubilee · 19/12/2014 14:31

Low platelets for me, just met consultant for first time today. Loved it, much more straight talking than the MW

Siarie · 19/12/2014 14:38

I am for now but I have an autoimmune thyroid issue so it's being managed by my GP and endocrinology. Then at about 8 months I'm seeing an obstetrician who I think will say whether I am ok to give birth at a birth centre rather than hospital.

But none of this has actually been explained to me, I've just pieced it together based on appointment letters and dates.

makesomenoise · 19/12/2014 14:40

pre-eclampsia with DD1 and a 3rd deg tear led to consultant care for DD2. Now expecting DC3 and consultant care due to previous and also CS for DD2.

Innocuoususername · 19/12/2014 14:57

A 3rd degree tear and major post partum haemorrhage in a previous delivery for me. Otherwise I had a normal healthy pregnancy so my consultant led care didn't actually start until 20 weeks.

Number3cometome · 19/12/2014 15:00

P.s, had scans every 3 weeks from 20 weeks.

I was under full care at Kings College in London.

This time not sure where I will be but I live in Essex now so hoping won't be Kings.

Kings were excellent and had an Eclampsia expert. Eclampsia (stage after Pre-Eclampsia) is pretty rare, so it was nice to have someone who understood rather than the M/W who was really not equipped to deal with it.

purpleteapig · 19/12/2014 16:48

Mine was due to a bi-cornuate uterus and bleeding. Although transfered to mw led care at a couple of days ago at 33 weeks. Snap with you number 3 as I was previously at Kings College but we now live in Essex!

steerpike82 · 19/12/2014 16:51

I was consultant lead in my 1st due to a combination of BMI, DVT in childhood & hypermobility despite arthritis. 2nd time around I was discharged at 20 wks.

DeckTheHell · 19/12/2014 16:54

#1 pre-eclampsia
#2 pre-eclampsia plus big for dates baby (who actually wasn't at all big)
#3 being over 40 (but miscarried )

Number3cometome · 19/12/2014 17:01

purpleteapig Are you pregnant now? I'm seeing a consultant at Basildon on the 3rd Feb, worried incase they aren't able to deal with me!

KateTheHuman · 19/12/2014 17:23

For me it was my BMI.

capecath · 19/12/2014 20:54

I am due to placenta abruption and a premmie with ds1 despite full term ds2. I also have strep b and low lying anterior placenta but not sure either of those on their own would mean "consultant led". Strep b means drip during labour, have to be in hosp. Low placenta means extra scan to see if it has moved. Would get extra attention if causes bleeding or covering os.
