I couldn't believe it i went to my 12 weeks scan and i was all excited as it my first pregnancy, went in the ultrasound room and saw my lil bubba hear the heartbeat. I asked the lady if i can have a photo as she was about to print it the printer wouldn't work. so i went home empty handed, it did upset me but you think with all the money there NHS get cant they update or check there machine.

has anyone had the same problem as me?

Hmm
itiswhatitiswhatitis · 10/11/2014 18:09

The average cost of an individual pregnancy, delivery and post natal care is about £3000 and there are about 800,000 births a year. But you're right where does the money go?

wonkylegs · 10/11/2014 18:13

Tomorrow I'm going to have a scan to see if my baby is alive or whether I'm miscarrying. Guess what I don't care if there is a picture or not. I'm glad the priority is the wonderful midwife who spoke to me so calmly when I started bleeding, the fab consultant who delivered my DS by emergency section and all the fantastic staff who have helped me through my 1st pregnancy and this one. A printer broke (funnily enough these things happen) - yes it's disappointing but it's hardly an essential service to be outraged by it's failure.

tiggy2610 · 10/11/2014 18:15

Sending nothing but positive thoughts for tomorrow wonkylegs Thanks

MyOneandYoni · 10/11/2014 18:16

Was having a clear out today and found my first scan picture... I remember the joy of seeing my baby move and hearing the heartbeat for the first time, and the picture now just seems like a very awkward, hard-to-make out scrap of paper.
I hope the pregnancy goes well for you. You'll laugh about this soon...

Kitsmummy · 10/11/2014 18:16

Jesus, I suggest you get back to your school lessons and brush up on your grammar

BitOutOfPractice · 10/11/2014 18:18

When I had the DC here were no pictures frpm 12 week scans

From what I remember, DD1 looked more like a prawn than a lil bubba

WhyOWhyWouldYou · 10/11/2014 18:22

Whilst its a shame that you didn't get a picture, please get some perspective - the printer had obviously only just broken as it was when the sonographer tried to print it that it broke!!! hardly like they have even had a chance to get it fixed (which presuming its the one printing direct from the scanning machine will be done quickly as they can and do use those for printouts sometimes needed in medical records).

Your comment on where the NHS money goes was rather a poor statement to make - NHS money goes on medically necessary procedures, saving lives, easing pain and suffering and on providing pretty good free antenatal care. It does not need to go on giving people gifts or souvenirs.

rootypig · 10/11/2014 18:23

Ah OP I sympathise. You are daft to suggest that the NHS is rolling in cash or this should be a priority, but I understand the disappointment. I loved my 12 week scan pic - it looks just like DD (this makes me sound like a loon but it bloody does).

How about paying for a private one? Fyi the 20 week scan is usually less clear, not more.

NB for all those talking about NHS budgets, I paid about £5 for mine a few years back, which is surely covering the cost of the printer.

EmmaGellerGreen · 10/11/2014 18:23

I'm not often lost for words but really? OP are you serious? If you are, you really need to reconsider your priorities and, erm, maybe do a little bit of reading about the state of the NHS and the primary reason that scans are undertaken.

thesmallbear · 10/11/2014 18:25

When I went to my scan for my first pregnancy my baby was dead. Get some perspective. I'd have given anything for just a heartbeat and sod the photo!

bendybrickpumpkinpatch · 10/11/2014 18:25

Yeah whatever...

Idontseeanysontarans · 10/11/2014 18:38

OP have a search for threads about embarrassing or cringey pregnancy and PFB moments. This is yours.
It's possible that one of the ladies in the waiting room with you were in the position of posters on here and were waiting for confirmation of bad news. No printer working or otherwise is worth getting het up about.
The next scan pic will be much clearer than this one. Congrats on your pregnancy.
(And just a tip, bubba , bubz etc in any context WILL get you your arse handed to you)

JennyBlueWren · 10/11/2014 19:36

They all look the same at that stage anyway and not as clear on the print out as on the screen -you an just print some off the internet.

My dad's drugs that keep him alive cost thousands each year (he estimates he costs the NHS more than he pays them in taxes) -that's probably where all their money's going.

magneticfield55 · 10/11/2014 19:39

You can have my 12 week scan photo OP, I can't make out what the feck it is anyway.

LuckyAugust · 10/11/2014 20:12

Congratulations on your pregnancy but please just be grateful you came away knowing your baby is ok and nothing was picked up by the sonographer. Having worked in the NHS for 20 years believe me funding for a printer is certainly not a priority Hmm . Private scans aren't as expensive as you think, we've had a few in the past and I'm sure a basic reassurance scan with Babybond is either £49/£59.

As it happens, I was in hospital today too.
Sadly they don't even have the luxury of a printer to provide their patients with a glossy keepsake memoire in the broken bones department.
They did however allow me to take a photo of the x-ray display with my phone.
The consultant even took it for me as I couldn't reach.
I did ask nicely, and she was very helpful.
I really appreciated this bit of 'going the extra mile', as their job (contrary to popular belief) is care and medicine.

HerrenaHarridan · 10/11/2014 20:24

I have my first scan picture. Somewhere around, I could never bring myself to throw them away but I can't look at them either. Stupid blurry pointless things.

At my first scan my dc was diagnosed as disabled and an at risk pregnancy, I had to go home debating termination. (I didn't)

I understand it must have been disappointing for you but seriously that scan was to check your baby's health. It wasn't actually about you at all.
There's going to be a lot of that now your having a baby.
Congratulations.

annoyedofnorwich · 10/11/2014 20:25

Have a look on Groupon, you can sometimes get 3D scans with a photo for approx £20.

God I sound like such a miserable cynic. Some one slap me

it'll still be bloody true though

Pikkewyn · 10/11/2014 20:29

Last time I looked 12 weeks scans weren't photo shoots! They are medical diagnosis tool not for the frivolous need to have a picture. If you want a picture pay for a private scan and they'll have a working printer.

Thesimplethings · 10/11/2014 20:29

To be honest I would have been very upset to come away from my 12 week scan without a picture so I can sympathise. However, it took us 8 years and a few failed Ivf treatments before we finally conceived naturally. So I understand your disappointment.

However, the nhs is stretched and money is needed to save lives.

Perhaps pay for a private scan at 16 weeks to find out the gender if you wish and get a picture?

Greyhound · 10/11/2014 20:31

I had four miscarriages - no babies, no pictures. I did ask for a picture of the last baby but this was refused - I don't know why.

I am not saying this to make you feel bad, but these things (scan pictures not being available) happen - have a private bonding scan, if you can afford it, as then you can get a whole DVD and the scan would be one of those fancy 3D ones.
