24, young mum?

At what age are you a young mum? Im 24 and 36 weeks gone. A friend of mine is constantly referring to me as a young mum. Not sure whether i do regard 24 as a particulary young age to start motherhood. What do you guys think?

I was 19, and didnt feel at all young! Alot of people dont beleive my age though... 24 isnt "young"... not to be a mum anyway. Your fine!

hairymclary · 04/10/2006 22:56

round here 24 is an "older" mum. average age is about 17/18 I believe.

MrsSpoon · 04/10/2006 23:01

I was 23 when I had DS1 and always felt young in comparison to most of the other women I met at various anti-natal appointments etc. Even now when in company with the Mums at School they have made comments about me being the "baby", most of the other Mums in DS1's class are late thirties, early forties.

AlmostAnAngelMostlyADevil · 04/10/2006 23:05

i was 21 with dd1

I think it is a little bit of resentment on my friends part to be honest. Couple of years older than myself and still on the shelf. Will av a word with her next time. oh and can i just say i personally think as long as you are prepared and willing to be the best possible parent you can i dont think age is an issue. (Within reason of course!!!)

I was 23 when I had ds1 and was thought of as being young. Am now very young to have had two (am now 26) where I live most mums of babies are 30+

TarkaTheHeadlessOtter · 04/10/2006 23:15

i did feel young at 24 only because most of my friends were miles from being a mum. depends on peer group really...i am glad now though!

teen01 · 04/10/2006 23:21

Its the same for me i am the first of my school and university friends to be a mum, but like you i would not change the situation im in for the world.

The thing I found strange in this town is that Mums fell into two age groups, either very young or 30 plus, at times I felt like the only 20 something in the area to have just had a baby.

SparklyGothKat · 04/10/2006 23:26

haha, I had 3 kids by the age of 23. Am 27 now and am still called a young mum..

colditz · 04/10/2006 23:27

I felt like that Mrsspoon. I was 22 when I had ds1, 25 when I had ds2, and 26 now. I am not a Young Mum(tm), but I am quite a young mum

emzickle · 05/10/2006 08:06

i'm 19 and 39 weeks PG - at antenatal classes I was by far the youngest, all pregnant with first babies, but they were about 28 - 38 years old.

Infact the woman giving the classes referred to me as the baby of the class. Great.

trinityrhino · 05/10/2006 08:09

I had my first at 21 and felt like people thought I was a young mum. I'll be just turned 29 when I have my third and no longer feel like a young mum. I don't think 24 is a young mum at all.

gigglinggoblin · 05/10/2006 08:09

i was 19 when i had ds1, am now 27 and no. 4 is due before i am 28. i did class myself as young with ds1 but with ds2 at 21 i didnt. its definately a state of mind!

ScreamandYellowFeathers · 05/10/2006 08:14

Crikey.
I was 21 when I had dd and I'm 24 now and had ds 6 weeks ago.

Considering there are 12 year old girls having babies, I would say 24 anything but young!

southeastastralplain · 05/10/2006 08:21

i was 24 when my ds(13) was born. don't feel young now!

schneeblysteinsmonster · 05/10/2006 08:23

ditto anchovies post.

nogoes · 05/10/2006 08:34

I think 24 is young but not too young. I wish I had started younger. I was 31 when I had ds and was the 2nd youngest in my antenatal group, 34 seems to be the average age for first time mums around here.

cocopop · 05/10/2006 10:25

I had ds1 when I was 20 and am now pg with ds2 at the age of 22. It is strange how almost all the Mums at toddler group are in their thirties or fourties. I feel a bit left out sometimes. When I started going, one of the older Mums came over to me and said "You're very young to be Mum, how old are you?", I felt like saying "Well you're very old to be Mum, how old are you?". I've learnt not to take things personally anymore though as I know that I'm just as good a parent as they are, and I have the added bonus of more energy!!

expatinscotland · 05/10/2006 10:25

I wish I had had my first at 24.

Nothing 'young' about it at all.

Age is just a number.

Lucyb9384 · 05/10/2006 10:45

i was 16 when i got pregnant with DD1 and am now 22 and pregnant with expected DS1.

youngmum21 · 05/10/2006 10:55

N1SEXYTING · 09/10/2006 19:59

I'm 24 with first child and feel its just the right age

lulumama · 09/10/2006 20:13

had first at 24 and second at 30 -

don't think it is too young...you know when you are ready for motherhood and you obviously are...

Elf1981 · 09/10/2006 20:14

I am 25 and my daughter has just turned a year old. I was 23 when pg, turned 24 a month before her birth.
I'm classes as "a young mum" by certain groups. With loads of people having kids in their 30's nowdays, babies in the 20s have gone from "average" to "young".
