I have been to the doctor this morning following a slight bleed since yesterday, it has stopped now but still getting niggling pains so the doc has booked for me to have an early scan in Thursday morning. She has said that she has been told it will be an internal scan due to my dates.

I have never had an internal scan before so i dont know what this in-tales so would really appreciate it if people could let me know their experiences to provide some much needed reassurance and advice.

Sorry no idea about scan but hope everything is ok x

JassyRadlett · 28/10/2014 13:40

Well, it's what it sounds like. They put a slim instrument up your vagina to get the image. I think they use lots of lube. For me, it was totally painless and not even very uncomfortable - nothing like a smear test, for example.

I had the same as you, a bleed at 8 weeks, and the reassurance of seeing the foetus and its heartbeat was immense. They let me have pic of the scan and were so lovely and kind throughout that I wrote to the hospital about what a positive experience it was.

He's 3 now.

WrappedInABlankie · 28/10/2014 13:43

Its basically a thin dildo with a camera on it. They put a condom on and lube it up. Not the comfiest of things but not painful

Purplehonesty · 28/10/2014 13:44

Yeah it's only thin like a magic wand. Doesn't hurt.
Good luck op I bled loads with dd at 8 wks and she is fine.

breakfastnotattiffanys · 28/10/2014 13:46

basically they insert a hand held cylinder-like probe into your vagina and they get a better view of your womb. I have had it 3 times now and although a bit undignified and slightly uncomfortable it did not hurt,.It was covered in a sort of condom thing (for hygiene reasons I suppose). Good Luck!

FannyFifer · 28/10/2014 13:49

You can usually insert it yourself if that feels more comfortable for you.

Littleturkish · 28/10/2014 13:52

As described above. Not too painful.

Good luck, hope it goes well.

Burmama · 28/10/2014 15:21

Not remotely painful, not even close to a smear. Just make sure to relax, no clenching! Smile

FlossieTreadlight · 28/10/2014 15:24

As above, but they'll also most likely have a look at your ovaries while they're there too - still painless but for me it made me want to cough. Hope all goes well

PossumPoo · 28/10/2014 15:32

I hate it being referred to as a dildo Hmm

Jassy explains it well, it can be slightly uncomfortable but doesn't hurt.

3littlewomen · 28/10/2014 15:42

Dear Sian,

Have had many internal scans. Definitely not painful, just not very dignified. I had them after bleeding in my first pregnancy.... That pregnancy was successful, DS sat on floor watching fireman Sam! Best of luck.

sianilovesbeingamummy · 28/10/2014 16:29

I have childcare arranged so no worries with the littlens running round lol. Smears dont really bother me so sounds like this will be ok and at the end of the day it is for the good of my baby.

Yes the reference to a dildo did make me chuckle, think i would go a little red in the face if this was the case haha!!!

Look forward to making sure all is ok now and seeing the littlen a little earlier than expected.

many thanks to everyone

I had 2 during my last pregnancy. Agree with all the above and just wanted to add if it helps that they were over extremely quickly.

FrozenAteMyDaughter · 28/10/2014 16:37

For various reasons, I have had a lot of these. Ime, they are done very discreetly - you will lie back with a towel or other piece of material over your lower half - and the whole thing is over very quickly as others have said. Not a problem at all and I have never found them to be even uncomfortable.

Cuppachaplz · 29/10/2014 11:21

Over the years and for all sorts of reasons I have had quite few of these. They also do them later on to assess your cervix.

I one monographer who even called it the 'willy-cam' :D
It doesn't hurt, is very quick, and means is the only real way to see baby prior to 9 or 10 weeks, although sometimes they do try external at 8. TBH, I have found the willy-cam far more comfortable than drinking gallons of water, not peeing, then being asked to arch you back, stick your tummy out, jumps through hoop in a sparky suit juggling fire wands

Incidentally a large number of totally normal pregnancies have a little bleeding at some point.

Good luck OP xx

Gingerandcocoa · 29/10/2014 11:23

I had one as had bleeding at 8 weeks too. It was fine and lovely to see DS for the first time! (Having a sleepy cuddle now so a bit emotional :))

eurochick · 29/10/2014 11:28

I've had about 30 in the course of fertility treatment and early pregnancy. They are absolutely fine and just as others have described. In fertility circles they are know as "dildocams". I find it fascinating to get a close up image of everything in there. I find it more comfortable than the external full bladder scans when I am focused on not peeing myself!

I had 3 weeks of bleeding in the first tri but my baby hung on in there. I hope all is well for you too.

BlueberryWafer · 29/10/2014 11:46

I had an internal scan at the beginning of this pregnancy. They asked if I would be more comfortable inserting the camera myself, which I decided would be most comfortable for me. It is very thin, like a wand and they put lots of lubricant on and a condom. The actual scan itself wasn't the slightest bit uncomfortable for me, the only part I found slightly uncomfortable was when he angled the camera to check my ovaries, but it only took a few seconds and was only a teeny bit uncomfortable. They give you a sheet to cover your lower half and go behind the curtain while you take your trousers and knickers off, and again when you put them back on. Hope this helps Smile

leanne963 · 29/10/2014 11:57

I think it was just uncomfortable for me as I have a tilted uterus and always suffer from some pain during sex. But that's just me,I also have a sensitive cervix so experienced some slight spotting afterwards. I am basically the worst case scenario lol!!

BlueberryWafer · 29/10/2014 12:06

I have a tilted cervix too but didn't find it uncomfortable leanne, you must have been unlucky Sad

BlueberryWafer · 29/10/2014 12:07

Tilted uterus not cervix, no idea why I typed cervix!

leanne963 · 29/10/2014 12:18

Haha blueberry yea, I am annoying one of the unlucky ones ha! Nothing is easy with me! Got a 10 week scan tomorrow so fingers crossed I don't need an internal scan!

purplefeathers · 29/10/2014 12:34

The device is really long too but they really only put the tip of it in. I found it okay and nowhere near as bad as a smear. It was a strange sensation when she was moving it around to get a good look at everything and my greatest worry was that i felt like i was going to break wind! Blush

BlueberryWafer · 29/10/2014 13:02

Sorry leanne I just realised how insensitive my post sounded "you must be one of the unlucky ones" it wasn't meant to sound like that lol! Good luck with your 10 week scan, fingers crossed you will be able to have an external scan. It's my 20 week scan on Friday Smile

sianilovesbeingamummy · 29/10/2014 13:07

Thanks girls, good luck tomorrow Leanne. My doc thought they would do an external scan but when she rang the hospital they said it would be internal.

Just want tomorrow to come now as i am a prone worrier when it comes to pregnancy.
