Long latent phase - I'm so tired!

Now been contracting every 5-15 minutes for 30 hours. Not sure what I think the point of this thread is really, I'm just moaning. The contractions are manageable but no way sleep through able.

Anyone else had this? Tell me it logically must progress at some point?! Should I call the midwives at some point?

It's my first (very obviously I'm sure!)

I had this. Is baby moving okay? Mine got tired so I went in for monitoring and he was quite distressed (cord around neck, it turned out). They broke my waters and a few hours later: Hello baby!

All well. Do keep a check on feeling that your little one is still moving plenty, though.

splendide · 25/10/2014 03:21

He is still moving ok I think, maybe a little less today than yesterday. I think I'll go in tomorrow and get checked out. It's so stressful isn't it?!

I think it sounds like a good idea to get checked tomorrow. Several midwives said to me afterwards that you can get a pocket of waters between baby's head and your cervix which acts as a cushion making it very difficult for labour to progress. Breaking the waters was so simple and did the trick. Can't believe I waited so long to go in (Monday evening to Thursday morning!).

splendide · 25/10/2014 03:27

Thank you for the advice, I'm beginning to feel a bit hopeless!

Is it your first? My first labour went on like that for 4 days then midwife burst my waters and the baby was out in an hour! Definitely get them to check on you in the morning! Best of luck Thanks

PassTheAnswers · 25/10/2014 04:58

Yep I had similar. Went in to get checked twice. Both time contractions stopped as soon as got into the hospital wArd and was told I wasn't more than 1-2cm dilated. Mw cancelled my sweep on day 3 as she was sick and I ended up calling adau begging to be seen. Only to be told I was 5cm.

It is exhausting though and you have my sympathies. If movement is less plus the length of time you have been having regular contractions it well worth getting checked out.

splendide · 25/10/2014 05:15

Yeah my first. Just lost a load more plug - thought it had all come on Thursday night.

bronya · 25/10/2014 05:54

My first labour was like that. No real dilation after 42 hours of contractions (1cm) - they just weren't doing anything. I was put on the drip, and DS was born 15 hours later.

splendide · 25/10/2014 07:22

So at what point did you decide to call them Bron? I've been dutifully waiting for 3 in 10 minutes which is what I was told but I've now been like this for 40 odd hours.

I'd get out of the house and go for a walk if you can, that should help. All those contractions you're having will be doing something so they are not for nothing.

It sounds completely normal to me but if you're worried about the baby you should go in and get checked.

Keep active and hydrated and try and get some sleep when you can. Your baby is definitely on its way!!! Thanks

mumxof3x · 25/10/2014 07:33

My second birth went on from sunday to friday, every 6 mins til thursday where they went to every 3.

Third went on from sunday to sunday.

I would call labour to be checked, I did both times I went in after 3 days with first id only gotten to 2cm so got sent home, but went back in thursday night 3cm they kept me in as DS heart was racing I had him the next day.

Its worth being checked over just to see whats happening with baby and to see how you are progressing. Good luck xx

splendide · 25/10/2014 07:43

I managed 2 walks yesterday (just round the block). I'll try again today but they are much more intense so I'm a little worried I'll be on all fours in the park. I just need to stay calm so it's nice to hear that this is normalish! Thank you for indulging my moaning.

Bolshybookworm · 25/10/2014 08:18

I had a 30 hr latent labour and I remember the frustration and also worry of not knowing when it would end. I couldn't go for a walk, either, as although the contractions were sporadic, they were intense (back to back baby) and I would have felt panicky having them in public.
Definitely go in to the maternity ward- even if baby's fine, they might be able to offer pain relief. My friend had a week long latent labour, and they gave her a shot of diamorphine halfway through.

As an aside, I don't know why it's policy to let women labour for so long, it's incredibly exhausting.

mumxof3x · 25/10/2014 08:21

Its ok to have a moan you are allowed, its kind of fustrating when it goes on and on lol. But if they are getting more intense thats good. Hour before I went in hospital with ds3 I was walking round matalan wincing and deep breathing, mother had to keep saying to people "oh shes just in labour" lol my bump was barely there so people where looking at me rather strange ha. Hope its not too much longer for you now splendide x

bronya · 25/10/2014 08:24

Luckily for me, my waters went so that was the thing that made them induce. My SIL was in labour for days and baby became very distressed. I would ask for monitoring today just to be sure.

SpaghettiMeatballs · 25/10/2014 08:26

My second was on and off like this. Flew out in 50 minutes flat once my waters were broken.

I'd ring the hospital and have a chat with them if I were you.

Good luck.

splendide · 25/10/2014 08:47

Thanks all, I'm now crying a bit because you're all being nice. I need to grow a backbone! I'm going to call them now I think just for some advice if nothing else.

OP posts:
mumxof3x · 25/10/2014 08:55

No u dont need to grow a backbone. This labour buisness is hard work, and especially with firsts because its a totally new experience. Hope you are ok x you will have your baby soon x

Bolshybookworm · 25/10/2014 09:02

You don't need to grow a backbone, you need your dp or someone else to go out and get you a stack of trashy mags, some malteasers and a glass of wine! Don't put any unnecessary pressure on yourself, ring maternity, go in physically if you're finding it hard and they're fobbing you off, and just do what you need to do to get through it, be it going for a walk or sitting on the sofa and getting on all fours and mooing like a cow every 15 minutes (which might be what I did Wink)

MummyCoolski · 25/10/2014 10:43

Morning, Splendide. How are you this morning?

splendide · 25/10/2014 14:06

Hi! Same basically. Spoke to hospital they said its all quite normal so I just need to keep at it. Stuck at about 10 mins apart still. Trying to relax!

Jodie1982 · 25/10/2014 15:23

Just want to wish you luck Hun. Don't b worried about calling MW's for advice, that's what they're there for. Is baby moving ok?

I'm doing it all again for the 5th time! I've got a while to wait yet tho.
Good luck. Wishing you all the best.

bronya · 25/10/2014 16:40

Just keep an eye on baby's movements. Any reduction, go straight in for monitoring and tell them that's what you're worried about, not the labour.

MummyCoolski · 25/10/2014 17:01

Agree with Bronya. This is tiring for the little one, too, so any reduction in movement could indicate distress.

Petal26 · 25/10/2014 17:06

Keep going splendide Smile
I could've written mumof3's post, my first was Sunday to Friday, stop and start, try and get some rest if possible, try and distract yourself with other things.
I'm hoping this one (38 weeks now) is a bit faster Smile
