How much does it cost for your ultrasound photo? I hope they print it off on nice photographic paper then, if they're going to charge for as little as printing off an image!

"I pay my taxes, so I don't see why I should empty my pockets even more for the nhs."

Feel free to try another country's system: in the US average total price for pregnancy and newborn care is about $30,000 for vaginal delivery (on average insurance would pick up $18,329 of this), and $50,000 for a C-section (on average insurance would pick up $27,866).

You're getting all of that (plus all the rest of the state-funded infrastructure) for your taxes, and you want to quibble over a photograph because you "don't see" why you should pay for it?

My youngest child gets consultant appointments every four months or so, audiology every three months on average, has had CT and MRI scans, gets speech therapy every week, and has had genetic screening done to diagnose her condition. All that hasn't cost us a penny directly. Strangely enough I'm not complaining because I once had to "empty my pockets" by paying £5 for a couple of ultrasound photos before she was born.

Hazelbrowneyes · 15/10/2014 16:29

£4.50 for 2 photos, max of 4 photos per person. I've only ever paid for 2 photos. I ended up with 5 photos from 12 week scan as baby moved constantly & 3 from 20 week scan. I have a growth scan at 34 weeks and won't buy a token as they state they will not give photos as the quality is too poor.

DonnaLlyn · 15/10/2014 16:31

Ok I think people are getting the wrong end of the stick. I don't mind paying a couple of pounds, but £5 - £10 is too much, and not because I am being stingy but because I genuinely can't afford that.

Yes, school photos will cost alot too. Hopefully by then my career will be better, but if I had to pay that now, then just like these scan photos, I would have to do without. And yes, I will do with out if I have to pay a lot, so please stop pointing that out!

As for private scans, see above. Honestly, if I can't afford a tenner what makes you people think I can afford £90 upwards to get this done privately?!

I thought there would be more people like me on here - ordinary people who can't afford to buy everything new. £100 for a wedding cake? You think that's reasonable? I'm making my own! And I sure as hell won't be shelling out £60 for a pregnancy pillow.

It's nice that we have free healthcare, and I guess that means that you all can afford your expensive baby equipment instead of spending it on clinics etc.

I on the other hand appreciate free healthcare because my job is not great and I couldn't afford health care otherwise.

Save £1 a week and you'll have enough at scan time.

SpuffySummers · 15/10/2014 16:33

Scans are not social occasions.
They are not for finding out the gender.
They are not to get photos.

They are to check that your baby is healthy.

GrouchyKiwi · 15/10/2014 16:35

For our scans there were signs up saying that there was a small charge for photos but they never asked for any money and I couldn't see a way to do it. I would have been happy to give them some money for the pics.

PenguinsIsSleepDeprived · 15/10/2014 16:35

If you genuinely can't afford it, go in, explain what you can afford and I am sure your sonographer will sort something out. You might well find that they only charge £1-2 per print anyway.

Regarding private scans - I think people are mentioning it mostly because it was a bit of a drip feed as to your financial situation. If your OP had said "Help, I've heard that they charge for photos in the UK. I'd love a photo but I'm totally broke and could only afford a couple of quid" you'd have had more supportive responses Smile

Only1scoop · 15/10/2014 16:35

Where are you from originally....somewhere where you get the photos free??

Photos are the last thing on my mind at an ultrasound scan....

Amazingly it's the main focus of some people's appointment....

DonnaLlyn · 15/10/2014 16:35

Thanks for the suggestion of taking a photo of the screen. I wanted to use the photo to tell our parents about the pregnancy, so this would be a great option. Thanks for the HELPFUL suggestion instead of the other trolls with their blatant judging.

Trolls??

Who is a troll here Op??

SoonToBeSix · 15/10/2014 16:37

We get ours for free in the fetal centre, £2 in the regular antenatal .

PenguinsIsSleepDeprived · 15/10/2014 16:38

Do you know what a troll is Donna? Because it isn't saying things you disagree with or find unhelpful. No one is trolling in response to your OP. You just don't like some of the answers.

DonnaLlyn · 15/10/2014 16:40

It's people who are being argumentative for the sake of stirring things up, and who aren't reading the explanations properly.

OP posts:
DonnaLlyn · 15/10/2014 16:41

I'd like the answers well enough if they were paying attention to my comments - I have NO problem with contributing a few quid!

DonnaLlyn · 15/10/2014 16:43

No only1scoop, health care was not free in my home country at all, but This is my frist pregnancy, and I was asking the question because I had no reason to know about the costs of these things

TinyMonkey · 15/10/2014 16:43

If you can't afford a few quid for a scan picture, you're going to shit yourself when you find out how much raising a child costs.

Missunreasonable · 15/10/2014 16:45

I don't mind paying a couple of pounds, but £5 - £10 is too much, and not because I am being stingy but because I genuinely can't afford that.

Out of curiosity; how are you planning to find the money to buy everything that your baby will need? The cost of scan photos is nothing in comparison to what it costs to raise a baby for just the first year alone. If you genuinely can't afford £5 for a photo then how are you going to pay for everything else?

eurochick · 15/10/2014 16:45

No one is trolling.

I would have no problem paying a small amount for a scan picture. We were given some but our scans were private, so we paid a lot more than a few pounds. Having previously only had scans showing I had miscarried, I was just thrilled that there was a live baby in there. A picture was the last thing on my mind.

DonnaLlyn · 15/10/2014 16:45

I am worried about my baby being healthy. I realise that is what the scans are for.

X post with tinymonkey

rubyboo2 · 15/10/2014 16:46

in Leeds its £6 for two images you have to pay by card not cash . However for the 1st scan we got 4 piccys and the 2nd scan we got 3 piccys . Smile

GreenShadow · 15/10/2014 16:46

But who actually needs a picture of a scan at all? A scan picture gives nothing away as to what your baby will actually look like. It's really just of novelty value.

Basically it's a luxury and in general, people have to pay over and above the basic costs for luxuries.

DonnaLlyn · 15/10/2014 16:48

How am I going to pay for everything my baby needs? By working hard on double and triple shifts, and emptying my bank account.
By not wasting money on £10 for photographs.

OP posts:
WhyOWhyWouldYou · 15/10/2014 16:50

Donna private scans were brought up because you were claiming there was nowhere else to buy a scan photo from, so the NHS were exploiting and blackmailing you. The point is there is another option and its a damn site more bloody expensive than any NHS hospital charges you.

Call your own hospital up and ask how much one scan photo is - your hospital may even be one of the ones that gives them free as a matter of course and most people seem to be indicating their hospital was £5 or less for multiple pictures, so not the £10 you keep going on about (its very unlikely yours will charge £10), so call them up.

Also just because I think you are being ridiculous with your talk of the NHS exploiting and blackmailing you for charging a few quid for a scan doesn't mean I'm rich - I'm far from it and just about scrape by each month.

purplemunkey · 15/10/2014 16:50

What tinymonkey said. We have free healthcare in the UK, paying up to a tenner for some non essential photos is nothing - and if it is, then you're going to be in for a real shock when you actually need to start buying essentials. I think our photos were £3 each and we got a few at each of the 12 & 20 wk scans. I am definitely not grumbling about the £12 I've spent on them.
