How much does it cost for your ultrasound photo? I hope they print it off on nice photographic paper then, if they're going to charge for as little as printing off an image!

£3 per print at my hospital. It funds NICU beds so I was happy to pay.

What Owl said. Given how much baby crap usually is priced to take advantage of new parents, it's a reasonable amount. I'd happily give the NHS a bit of income to pay for printing paper or whatever. It's not exploitative, any more than £60 for a pregnancy pillow or £100 for a wedding cake is exploitative.

DonnaLlyn · 15/10/2014 16:01

People would never normally pay £10 for 3 photos, but because it's the only place they can get an image of their baby at this stage, theres no other choice if you want this precious keep sake. I agree that its good to give money to the nhs to keep our medical treatment free or affordable, but when you have to decide between buying daily essentials and a photo of your baby, it's a bit rough. £10 is not pocket change (for me, at least).

You do have another choice, you can go get a private scan with as many pictures as you want and in cases videos and 4D. Hell you can get it printed on a mousemat if you want.

There are costs to the NHS in providing, paper and sonographer time in doing so. Wholly fair you're asked to pay for this if you want it.

HaroldLloyd · 15/10/2014 16:07

I can tell you to pay for someone to take a photo of the inside of your body would cost considerably more than ten pounds.

DonnaLlyn · 15/10/2014 16:08

It's fair to charge, but not as much as £10 - I'd expect my photo to come in a3 sized, or at least framed at that price! I'll pay for my photo and not be too bothered if it's about £3 per photo. I pay my taxes, so I don't see why I should empty my pockets even more for the nhs.

You're paying for the print off, not for the ultrasound itself HaroldLoyd

My younger child is 8 years old, so I may be out of date, but I think it was a donation (suggested 2 or 3). I wouldn't expect to get prints for free, as it is a medical procedure, but I wouldn't expect to have to buy a 'package' of 3 photos either. There should be a single print option (I know a lot of people do give copies to family, but it shouldn't be assumed).

When I had my first child (11 years ago) I had to pay for television access. I was in for 5 days so I did end up paying for it on a couple of occasions, but it really bugged me.

mrsmilkymoo · 15/10/2014 16:11

It was only a couple of pounds for us. Didn't mind paying it at all, the nhs is taxpayer funded and the photos are not necessary from a medical point of view, why should taxpayers have to fund a souvenir for me?

TinyTear · 15/10/2014 16:11

Ha! wait until they are at school and it's £10 for one school photo!

this is all to prepare you and I'd rather fund the NHS than the school photographer Grin

TinyMonkey · 15/10/2014 16:12

The pictures at 12 week scan were free, I think we got two or three. At the 20 week scan and all my growth scans since they ask for £2 and give you several prints. If you don't have any money on you or they don't have change for a note they tend to give you the pics for free anyway.

I think you're being a bit ridiculous tbh. If you don't like it, you can always go and pay for a private scan and be charged £80-100 for the privilege. Like a pp said, it's the NHS not a photographic studio.

TinyTear · 15/10/2014 16:12

you say I pay my taxes, so I don't see why I should empty my pockets even more for the nhs

Do you realise how much it would cost you to have a baby in any other country? scans, meds, appointments, bloods and so on...

trust me, you are getting so much more than what you put in taxes...

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 15/10/2014 16:14

£7 for 2 pictures which I think is a bit of a con, I wouldnt mind if it was say 5 pics but £3.50 per picture seems a bit excessive to me.

WhyOWhyWouldYou · 15/10/2014 16:15

You do have an alternative place to get a photo - its called a private scan, they give you pictures/CDs and will charge you an arm and a leg to put it on a cushion for you if you want. The price for a basic private scan and photo is £50-100.

In other countries the cost of a scan photo is paid for within the cost of a scan. I thank my lucky stars I don't have to pay for the scan, just a few quid (which yes is a lot to me but a damn site better than elsewhere in the world or in private care).

TinyTear · 15/10/2014 16:16

found this: A package of care at the Lindo Wing costs upwards of £12,000, including consultant obstetrician fees, plus £900 per extra night for inpatient stays in a standard room — compared with the £1,800 it costs the NHS to deliver a baby without complications (according to 2010 figures which include a one-day stay in hospital but exclude the cost of scans and drugs).

In my case i had a EMCS and was in hospital from monday to saturday... I really do not begrudge them a few pounds for a photo

SirChenjin · 15/10/2014 16:17

If you don't want to pay for it then don't - the NHS is not a photographic studio. What you could do instead is go onto Google, download a picture of a baby at 14 weeks gestation, print it off, and write your name underneath - because at that stage your baby has absolutely no distinguishing features and will look exactly the same as every other scan photo.

I'm now wondering if I should have demanded a picture of my son's heart after the operation to repair it Hmm

homeaway · 15/10/2014 16:17

Yes of course it is nice to have a scan picture ,but if you having a scan on the NHS then it is for medical reasons as others have said. You get the expertise of the person who is doing the scan for "free". You can have the scan with all the pictures you want if you go privately. In other countries people have to pay a lot of money for maternal care including the person doing the scan, I think it is great that the NHS is free .

Want2bSupermum · 15/10/2014 16:17

My hospital emailed the pictures to me as I didn't want them printed. I am in the US and the cost of my scan was a $50 copay. The hospital charged my insurance company $1000 and in return they paid $200. Those without insurance go on medicare and don't pay anything.

HaroldLloyd · 15/10/2014 16:18

The most important thing is that you're having a free scan surely.

I am pretty sure if you explained you couldn't afford ten pounds they would let you have one print. One is all you really need.

Like other people have mentioned, if you want and there is nothing wrong with that you can have photos, CDs, videos and anything else you want, which you have to pay for privately.

eastmidswarwicknightnanny · 15/10/2014 16:22

£4 per pic here n now have a super duper machine that takes cash n card n print a receipt u give to sonographer

Petallic · 15/10/2014 16:22

I may be wrong but I thought the NHS was moving towards electronic records and medical staff now view scans on a screen not a physical print out. So when you have your baby scan printed out it's from a special machine not just an Epson Inkjet they've got under a desk, so your £2/5/10 is going towards the machine upkeep also as the printer is only used for parent print outs.

I'm sure if you asked the sonographer would let you take a photo of the screen during the scan if you begrudge paying so much and then you can do your own print out.

MackerelOfFact · 15/10/2014 16:22

If you can't afford the £10, then don't have the printout. I'm sure they wouldn't mind you photographing the screen with your phone or something.

There is zero clinical need to have a photo of your foetus.

PenguinsIsSleepDeprived · 15/10/2014 16:23

I think it's fair enough. Don't like it, don't pay. I don't buy all this "oh it's the only photo until they are born, oh it's so precious it's blackmail stuff." It's a scan photo. They all look the same. I felt this way with my first child and I still do on my third.

People managed just dandy before they could have photos in utero.

MackerelOfFact · 15/10/2014 16:23

Ah, x-post. Grin
