And that's my problem really all I want is some runny eggs and some pate! It's rubbish (as she quietly huffs over salad) any one else got any yummy food ideas that distracted them from oh so tasty forbidden foods!..

well you can have the runny eggs long as they are lion stamped you are good to go
afraid the pate will have to wait though

saiyme09 · 08/10/2014 15:06

You have actually made my day keelyboo!

I had some medium-rare venison other week and nearly cried halfway through when I realised I shouldn't be eating it. Carried on though, figured I might as well finish what I started Wink

No cravings for forbidden food as such though...

croon979 · 08/10/2014 16:11

yes! blue cheese, camembert and pate are all things that I love, regularly eat and am craving more than ever!

PeppermintInfusion · 08/10/2014 16:11

I've had a craving for rose prosecco/cava type fizz. Not a big drinker of it normally.
Also cheese, all I can think about is cheese.
Yes runny eggs which are lion stamped so all supermarket ones should be fine.
I'm continually adding to a 'list' of stuff DH needs to stock up on for my return from hospital.

PeppermintInfusion · 08/10/2014 16:13

Croon you are allowed Stilton if that would in any way substitute for blue cheese. Also you can have cheeses if they've been cooked, eg baked goats cheese

CarmineRose1978 · 08/10/2014 16:18

Pate.... I want pate so much. I'd have hated to be deprived of runny eggs too, but I just make sure they're lion stamped.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 08/10/2014 16:26

You are still allowed soft cheese as long as it's pasteurized, most supermarket stuff is. I didn't stop eating brie, camembert etc as long as I checked it was pasteurized.

Paté, rare meat and alcohol are about all that is really off, I think.

croon979 · 08/10/2014 16:32

ah I thought Stilton was a no-go! Thanks!

cheshirem2b · 08/10/2014 16:38

I want proper goats cheese, rare steaks, duck breasts (cooked med-rare) and basically anything I shouldn't have! Typical isn't it? I have told DH though that once baby arrives he is cooking me a rare steak! Grin

AnythingNotEverything · 08/10/2014 16:40

Schro I think with soft cheese it's not pasteurisation that's an issue (it is for things like mozzarella though). Brie is mould ripened which carries a risk of listeria. Ok when cooked I think, but pasteurisation doesn't eliminate this risk.

The NHS website is very good for info. Guidelines do change so check rather than listen to friends. Feel free to ignore the guidelines - here guidelines, not law. You decide on what risks you're happy to take.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 08/10/2014 16:53

My MW told me with DS2 that the supermarket cheese was fine. Confused

AnythingNotEverything · 08/10/2014 17:02

www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/917.aspx

NHS says no. I'm sure the risk is tiny.

saiyme09 · 08/10/2014 17:39

A cheese board with pâté would be a treat!

Artandco · 08/10/2014 17:44

You can eat goats cheese if no rind. So not the softer stuff but the hard goats cheese is good to go ( it's amazing grated on chips!)

ELA88 · 08/10/2014 18:40

Ohh pate! I crave that so much :-(

longest · 08/10/2014 18:43

Rare meat is fine. Bacteria live on the outside of meat so as long and it's not minced and it's well sealed it'll be ok.

LittleBearPad · 08/10/2014 18:44

I've been eating pink meat too and I'm not worrying about uncooked eggs or prawns or some wine occasionally. I draw the line at pate and mould ripened cheese and am mainly drinking decaf.

BastardGoDarkly · 08/10/2014 18:46

I craved pate soooo badly,I went to my local veggie shop and bought a mushroom version, it was luuuush, I don't live there anymore, or I'd eat it over real pate any day :)

caravela · 08/10/2014 20:32

I had a brainwave when DH went to the market and brought back lovely-looking cheese I wasn't allowed (he tries his best but he gets confused over the cheese 'rules', and can only remember one category of banned cheese at any one time)... put it on a bagel or piece of toast and then shove it under the grill until it's baked through and all melty, and then you can eat it, because it will have killed the bacteria (NHS site confirms this.)

AnythingNotEverything · 08/10/2014 20:33

Current advice (only changed in the last few years) is that there is a risk of toxoplasmosis from rare meat.

The NHS link I posted above advises against rare meat. It's always worth checking. I had a newly qualified midwife friend urging me to order a rare steak until I showed her the current guidelines!

BirdhouseInYourSoul · 08/10/2014 20:38

When I was pregnant with DD I craved peanut butter which one midwife said wasn't allowed. I suffered three weeks before another midwife said it would be fine if there was no history of nut allergies within the family.

No idea if it's still on the banned list?

AnythingNotEverything · 08/10/2014 20:39

Peanut butter is fine. Possibly not if there are allergies/ezcema in the family.

LittleBearPad · 08/10/2014 20:44

I know Anything but personally I think the risk is small.

CarmineRose1978 · 09/10/2014 07:52

Sadly Bastard mushroom pate is also not recommend, because it can still cause listeria.
