Managing morning sickness during commute

I'm currently 6/7 weeks pregnant (midwife says 7, I think 6!) and one thing I'm really struggling with is dealing with my morning sickness on my way to work.

I'm lucky in that my morning commute is fairly short (one bus, twenty minute journey at the most). I'm finding though that I either want to puke on the bus, or that when I get off I'm walking up to work trying not to be sick in a bin!

I've tried varying my breakfast time (eating before I leave the house, waiting til I get to work etc). Yesterday I thought that chewing gum might help (it really didn't, I don't recommend that one!).

Does anyone have any tips for learning to deal with this? I feel really paranoid about walking through town retching Blush

Airplane sick bags
Baby wipes
Tie hair pack
Clean teeth when get to work

You need to get good at throwing up without making a mess!

Hi what helped me with feeling sick was peppermint tea and having something near by handy to snack on normally grapes or some digestive bikkies in my handbag, I was never sick but it helped with the feeling of being sick.

Good luck I'm sure there are lots of things people tried and worked for them.

Ah keeping grapes on hand is a really good idea actually, they're one of the few fruits I can still deal with eating right now!

And Justgotosleepnow, you're definitely right! For some reason I can manage it at home but not at work! Grin

Yer grapes and apples are the only fruits I can deal with or I make carrot and apple juice helps to and is refreshing Smile

I found polo mints helpful. Although to be fair I did throw up regularly on the train in shops, in the office, in the ultrasound, at dinner parties, at a wedding, in many gutters

You just get better at throwing up discretely. I had mouthwash in my desk at work.

DH ordered me 200 disposable coffee cups - the type made from cardboard with a plastic lid - and I sipped lemon and ginger tea all through my train commute. Helped enormously. I don't think it was hugely expensive - perhaps £30?

You will get better at it. Having bad morning sickness normalises vomiting.

Water with you at all times & mouth wash and put makeup on at work.

You could pick up a reusable thermos mug for less than a fiver, or a bit more if you wanted a fancier one. Cheaper than disposables.

I used to nibble something through my commute, just dry biscuits usually. It helped me not actually puke on the tube. Water or any liquid made me feel even worse while travelling.

I was still always (without fail) sick in the street once out of the tube, though. I mastered the art of sick bags and found some discreet spots on my route where I could yack in peace Grin.

I agree with grapes, I also found mini cheddars my saviour! Try freezing some grapes because sucking ice can help and frozen grapes make less mess out and about, good luck, I feel your pain xx

My morning sickness was worst in the evenings so I'd have a problem on the way home. The solution I found was having a bag of crisps or mini cheddars, and having one crisp/cheddar at each stop (which was the only way I could make sure I was continuously eating/chewing rather than bolting them all at once and then having to get off the bus to throw up half way home). That also left a few for the walk home from the bus stop, though the walk was usually what finished me off, but at least then I had some fresh air and a gutter.

Ready salted crisps were my go to for morning (and evening) sickness. Just nibbled on them for my tube journey (50mins), the other thing I found important was not to let myself get too hot - so I went for layering, bundled up for the walk to the station and then stripped down sometimes to a vest top for the train journey (I got some very strange looks!)

Thermos/travel cup with ginger and lemon tea, or really strong red berry tea. Little sips for the whole journey.

If at all possible, I tried to eat something before I left the house. Much of the nausea seemed to be related to hunger.

Drugs.
There are safe drugs out there for morning sickness. Only thing I did that made any difference. See your GP if you are struggling.

Tupperware box with a lid and lined with portable potty liners so you can just bag it and bin it. I had awful sickness with all 3 from conception to birth so there is nowhere I haven't thrown up.

I found the wrist bands helped (but didn't stop it altogether). Luckily my commute is through the countryside so I would often get off the bus in an unpopulated spot and be sick in a field before getting the next bus.

I experimented with what to eat and drink but it was hard to find anything that worked everytime. No fruit juice and a mini breakfast at home followed by a mini breakfast when I reached work helped. I also found the taste of toothpaste in my mouth would make me feel sicker so left brushing my teeth till I got to work.

Sometimes I'd have to break the journey twice and it'd take me two hours rather than one to get in! I would set off v. early which also meant I'd arrive at work before everyone else and go and be sick in the loos!

Grapes were the devil for me!

It turned out my morning sickness was severe indigestion and Gaviscon was an instant cure for my nausea (for about 1/2 an hour), be warned, if it is morning sickness and not indigestion, gaviscon will definitely make you spew!

Have you actually been sick, or is it just a severe urge? Youre at the worst stage because so early on you keep wondering if it will get worse today, eventually you'll learn your rhythms and begin to have more confidence that you may, or may not be sick. That first worried few weeks is very nerve wracking and unsettling.
