Are you pregnant, or are we pregnant?

It really irritates me when men with a pregnant partner describe themselves as pregnant. I think it really diminishes the hard work pregnancy is.

How do you feel? Are you pregnant yourself, or is he pregnant, too?

I am pregnant, WE are having a baby!

BanglesSpangles · 29/09/2014 13:09

Ha- yeah, 'we are pregnant' really winds me up - there's no 'we' about this situation!

scaevola · 29/09/2014 13:15

The only time it is ever correct for a couple to say "we are pregnant" is if it is lesbian relationship and they have overlapping pregnancies.

ApocalypseThen · 29/09/2014 13:19

Yes! I sometimes feel like saying "have you decided who is giving birth yet? Fingers crossed for you!", but it seems quite churlish.

Inside I say it.

I say we and am female.

thesmallbear · 29/09/2014 13:26

Oh I'm glad it's not just me. I got an email from a friend recently which stated, 'when we decided to get pregnant.' And I thought really, your DH was pregnant as well was he Hmm. It should be 'we decided to try for a baby' and 'were trying to get me pregnant.'

minkah · 29/09/2014 13:30

Men can't be pregnant, it's a total affectation to say 'we' in this instance.

If his wife is in love with George Clooney, does he say "we are in love with George Clooney"?

If his wife gives up work, does he say "we are giving up work."?

Will he say "I've got terrible morning sickness."?

Poledra · 29/09/2014 13:35

Arf! DH always says he was most thankful not to be the one who was pregnant. I don't think he ever said 'we'. He was more likely to say 'Pol's pregnant, due in .'

smokeandglitter · 29/09/2014 13:36

Ugh - I completely agree! SO annoying!

Pregnant is the physical state of growing a child in your womb, therefore I am pregnant.

We are having a baby.

It seems to have come over from America as I knew a lot of US friends who said it before it started being said over here. Reminds me of slightly creepy couples who are like mirror images of each other and never stop smiling - ewww. It's weird and it's incorrect.

susiedaisy · 29/09/2014 13:37

Agree with Tory

I am pregnant. We are having a baby

BreeVDKamp · 29/09/2014 13:40

I am pregnant!! I despise it but I keep finding myself saying (to DH, haven't told anyone else yet) "when we found out we're pregnant...." etc. Which makes me so mad! Why can't I just say, "when we found out we're having a baby?" Ha!

WhyOWhyWouldYou · 29/09/2014 13:53

I am pregnant, we are having a baby.

If DH was talking about the pregnancy he would say my DW is pregnant.

It makes no sense for a man to say "we are pregnant" and implies they get a tough nine months too / don't appreciate how hard it can be for a woman.

DecaffTastesWeird · 29/09/2014 14:00

I am pregnant, we are expecting a baby. I have never encountered this in RL thank goodness.

Pregnantagain7 · 29/09/2014 14:00

We aren't the size of a house
We don't have piles
We don't have swollen ankles
We can't eat anything without horrendous indigestion
We don't get up five times a night to wee
We aren't in pain with a bad back every second of every day
We don't cry at random things
We don't have to give birth

I on the other hand have all these things and then someGrin

However he is trying (very bloody trying) and I know he's a fabulous dad when the baby gets here.

But if he ever suggests WE are pregnant I would dangle him over the banister by his balls!! Grin

BumpNGrind · 29/09/2014 14:02

I am pregnant
I am having our baby, not DH.

If the day comes when men can be pregnant and safely deliver a healthy baby then I am signing DH up, but until then he is not pregnant nor is he having our child, that job is solely mine.

DH becomes a completely equal parent on the day I give birth, up until then it's my responsibility to carry, care for an protect our baby.

Bunbaker · 29/09/2014 14:05

"I say we and am female."

Why?

mrshjb · 29/09/2014 14:30

I am pregnant not my DH. We are having a baby. Mila Kunis had a good rant about this on some American show!

Love the comment about deciding who is giving birth haha!

fanjobiscuits · 29/09/2014 14:54

Bun - because that is how it feels to me/us.

Castlemilk · 29/09/2014 14:56

There is no 'we'.

Not unless the plan going forward is to take a salad slicer to his undercarriage at 40 weeks, in the spirit of Total Sharing.

Only1scoop · 29/09/2014 14:57

I am pregnant not Dp

I actually despise the 'we are pregnant' speel.

ToAvoidConversation · 29/09/2014 14:58

I don't care what's said. We took a long time to get pregnant, it was horrendous for both of us. The pregnancy has made me so sick so DH has done as much as he possibly can. His life has changed so much. So I don't really distinguish between I am pregnant/we are pregnant. Its a dual effort.

Only1scoop · 29/09/2014 14:59

Just can't stand the twee 'we' Confused

ToAvoidConversation · 29/09/2014 15:03

Suppose it depends on our conception and pregnancy. If it's all fairly average with no problems I can see why it's more of the 'I'.

honeysucklejasmine · 29/09/2014 15:03

Mila Kunis Against Men Saying "We Are Pregnant":

motherinferior · 29/09/2014 15:03

Wot Castlemilk said.

I would have loved DP to do the pregnancy bit for me. Adored it.
