How strict are you being with "banned" foods?

Just interested to know the above really. Also, are you avoiding foods based on what your MW / HCP recommends, the NHS website or elsewhere? Thanks.

I haven't been very strict at all in this pregnancy or my last one. I still have a latte everyday, eat sushi, rare steak, runny eggs etc.

KittyandTeal · 21/09/2014 20:26

I've cut my caffeine down to 1 coffee a day (seemed fine for dd) and watching non pasteurised dairy. I'm veggie so don't need to worry about pate etc

stargirl1701 · 21/09/2014 20:26

No alcohol in first trimester. Food is easy as I can usually eat nothing!

After that, no. Not really. I ate rare steak, soft eggs (lion stamped), haggis, etc. I didn't eat any raw fish though.

Rumandcokeplease · 21/09/2014 20:26

I didn't have pate or mr whippy I've creams as they do have quite a high listeria risk but I quite happily ate rare steaks and runny eggs!!

Rumandcokeplease · 21/09/2014 20:27

Ice creams...

LightUpLightUp · 21/09/2014 20:28

Hmmm I've stayed away from things like coke/fizzy drinks/McDonald's/KFC and other things that just seem like 100% crap however my guilty pleasure is coffee! I've had one cup a day throughout. I don't like fish, eggs or cheese so haven't had to worry about those

excitedforbaba · 21/09/2014 20:29

Ice creams has definitely been the hardest thing to avoid over the summer months!
I actually missed it more than a glass of wine Hmm

scratchandsniff · 21/09/2014 20:29

Hmmmm this is second time around, and I have to confess to not being very good. Was on holiday last week and indulged in a couple of small glasses of wine, soft cheese, seafood and rare meat. I'm only 11 +5 too Confused

mswibble · 21/09/2014 20:30

Im 9+3. I had a slightly runny poached egg the other morning which I dithered about. In the end I ate it as I have really missed runny yolks! I am really missing cheese. Look all longingly at the delicious smelly blue wedges in the supermarket.

Ive had two v small glasses of red since finding out but the thought of alcohol now makes me nauseous so not missing my booze. And even though I was a coffee addict previously I cant stomach it now, not even tea.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 21/09/2014 20:32

Nope, but its DC2 so I think that might be why. Im eating prawn tpast and drinking a glass of white wine.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 21/09/2014 20:32

Oh and am 36 weeks.

WingsClipped · 21/09/2014 20:34

I generally follow the nhs website guidelines but with a pinch of common sense.

I'm still having runny (yolks) eggs, sushi (fine according to nhs but some people avoid), smoked fish (again fine), and cured meats from reputable places (some people avoid totally and nhs advises caution). I have my meat very slightly pink/medium to well done still- I normally only eat meat rare when not pregnant so that's my compromise. I'm eating soft cheeses when cooked or I make sure it is pasteurized.

Things I'm avoiding totally- caffeine- as there are plenty of decaf versions which taste the same/fine to me. Also not eating livers or pates. I'm trying not to have any alcohol but have on several occasions had to hold a glass and take tiny sips so people wouldn't twig I was pregnant.

hollie84 · 21/09/2014 20:35

I avoided things that could damage the baby (so listeria mainly) didn't fuss about things that would just give me food poisoning.

TinyMonkey · 21/09/2014 20:36

I'm almost 29 weeks and so far I've had occasional alcohol, rare steak, unpasteurised cheese (accidentally in France), at least two cups of strong tea a day (deliberate), soft boiled & poached eggs (lion marked), oh and some amazing seafood in Greece.

Missing gin and pâté.

JennyBlueWren · 21/09/2014 20:37

I'm at 18 weeks and I'm not being very strict.
Not had any alcohol (apart from a sip of Pimms at a wedding and alcohol used in cooking). Didn't drink coffee at all to start with (breaking a big caffeine habit) but am drinking a cup or so now.
I don't like smelly cheeses, raw fish or pate. Have eaten runny eggs and ice cream from the vans throughout. Occasionally had camembert. Had some "deli" meats but not a lot.
More of a problem over the past few weeks has been finding out what I can eat without getting dreadful heartburn. Avoiding eating in the evening helps but then I get hungry at 3 am!

LBNM19 · 21/09/2014 20:55

I've eaten eggs and soldiers twice lol 35 weeks now x

StetsonsAreCool · 21/09/2014 21:01

I'm 27 weeks, and so far I've had runny boiled egg and soldiers a couple of times around 18 weeks because I really fancied it, and some Brie on crackers a couple of weeks ago because I completely forgot I wasn't meant to eat it!

If I have steak, I go medium-well rather than medium. I haven't cut out anything that could just give me food poisoning. I've had the odd glass of wine.

Basically, I've not really paid very much attention to the rules this time, but I do have days where I forget I'm pregnant when food is concerned Blush

junkfoodaddict · 21/09/2014 21:29

I had a sip of red wine today - am 14 weeks. Don't think LO will become alcohol dependent!
DC1 - Super cautious 9except for the caffeine - I NEEDED the caffeine!!!)
DC2 - there are banned foods?!?!?!? Making every attempt to eat as much stilton as I like and had a HUGE Mr. Whippy ice cream last weekend.
Never been sick with these foods pre pregnancy. more likely to get hit by a flying cow.

moggle · 21/09/2014 22:14

32 weeks with DC1 here and since the start I've been drinking one alcoholic drink once or twice a week with a meal, eating cooked seafood, eating (raw) sushi from good restaurants in busy places (so made fresh and not left sitting around for hours), having up to three caffeinated drinks a day (but it's usually just 2), and have had lion stamped runny eggs when I've felt like them (which has been only 4 or 5 times. Don't think I've had Mr Whippy but that's just due to chance, I had no idea that was 'banned'!

I went (mostly) by the NHS rules, and then by common sense and some research (eg with the runny eggs). Haven't had pate, or blue cheese or unpasteurised cheese (but have had it cooked, yum). I didn't have any morning sickness or nausea so have basically eaten almost as normal all the way through. Not craving anything but looking forward to having mum's homemade chicken liver pate at Christmas! (although I think TBH there would be absolutely no harm to having it now).

smogsville · 21/09/2014 22:51

Am about ten weeks with DC2. Was quite naughty in France and Spain last week with cheeses, medium steak, ice cream (had forgotten this wasn't allowed until reading other posts on this thread), naughty meats including rather a lot of iberico ham, oh dear. Is cooked seafood allowed? Had plenty of that too. Creme brûlée? Argh minefield.

No alcohol but not really missing it so no biggie. Planning to behave now back on UK soil.

Gennz · 22/09/2014 00:25

No strict at all. Have been eating soft cheese (but pasteurised), 1 x coffee a day, cured meat, sushi (with raw salmon, from a good spot where I know it's made fresh) and medium rare meat. Haven't many eggs but I'm not consciously avoiding them. Definitely haven't avoided ice cream!! Why is everyone avoiding ice cream? I wouldn't eat a dodgy soft serve from an ice cream truck, but I lived on movenpick maple walnut in my first 12 weeks.

I was making an effort to avoid medium rare meat but got really anaemic (as I can't stomach well done red meat so just didn't eat any) so I figured the remote risk of toxomoplasis was far outweighed by the benefit of gettign my iron count back up.

I've avoided oysters (not a hardship) and pate (weirdly a real hardship, I crave it!) and have limited alcohol intake to 1 - 2 glasses of wine a week. Have rarely had more than 1 glass to be honest and it hasn't been difficult to curb my booze intake at all which is really odd because I could quite happily polish off a bottle pre pregnancy
