Am I having a miscarriage?

I'm 6 weeks pregnant and today I had some blood when I went to the loo, not very heavy but definitely there.
I have spoken on the phone to my GP, he told me that some pregnancies do bleed and don't always miscarry and that's at the moment it is 50/50. He has advised I go home from work (which I have done) and have complete rest for the next 2 days.
I had to tell my manager who didn't even know I was pregnant. She was supportive and allowed me to leave straight away.
I am terrified. I think I'm losing my baby. is there anything I can do?? And how do I know if I miscarry?
I don't have a stomach ache but have been getting a slight twinge in in my lower left stomach/groin for about a week but I out it down to gas and feeling sick. I've been very sick over the past 2 days.
Thanks for allowing me to vent and if anyone can offer any reassurance or advice I would welcome it

Hi, sorry I cannot give you an answer but this happened to me at 7 weeks. It is true what your GP said that a lot of ladies bleed in pregnancy and some are fine but sadly some are not. There is nothing you can do but rest and look after yourself. You could also ask for a referral to your local EPU for an early scan which I had.

I hope everything is ok and wish you luck... there are happy endings (I'm now 25 weeks this week)
Thanks

BananaToast · 17/09/2014 16:53

I'm 8 weeks and have had bleeding of some sort more days than I haven't since finding out a month ago. I've had several scans to check it's all ok, including one last week after bleeding increased and became bright red, and was told everything looks perfectly normal and they can't see a reason for the bleeding. One of the sonographers I saw told me not to worry unless it's heavier than a normal period and passing big (i.e. palm sized) clots.

It's awful having to wait it out, I sympathise! I would definitely second asking for a referral for a scan at your local EPU as it can help to put your mind at ease, at least in the short term.

BananaToast · 17/09/2014 16:54

Oh and since its worst last week my bleeding has now stopped, but I've been told it may continue throughout the first trimester without anything necessarily being wrong, so try to stay positive for the moment!

FreckleBee · 17/09/2014 17:02

Thank you both, that's actually reassuring to read. I feel really quite upset by today's events, I'm frightened of losing my baby. I know everyone is, I just can't put into words how scary this is.
I don't know if they have epu's in scotland or not, my GP certainly didn't suggest anything like that but it would be a relief to find out one way or another if my baby is okay.
Does anyone know if they have epu's in scotland?

I had bleeding at 5/6 weeks, and then again at 10 weeks. The 10 week bleed was bright red, like a heavy period. I haven't had any bleeding since, and just started feeling baby move at 22ish weeks.
I know it's scary, but it doesn't necessarily mean anything is going wrong.
Good luck.

Whitetara · 17/09/2014 17:28

Hi
sorry you are going through this. Scotland does have epus. there's one at ninewells in Dundee that I know of. I'm sure there are others. my mw said I could self refer there.

DanyStormborn · 17/09/2014 17:36

I'm 16 weeks tomorrow and all seems well, belly growing, successful scan at 12 weeks. I bled a few times before 13 weeks. Usually just a spot or two. But I had a fairly bad bleed at 6 weeks, at one point it was red and dripping into the toilet, other times it was enough to stain a pad with some red, but most of the time just on wiping. I called my GP and he tried to get my local EPU to see me but they said they wouldn't unless the bleeding got worse. I know that some women do get seen at EPU for that type of bleeding so it is definitely worth a try. Try to stay positive, bleeding in early pregnancy is fairly common and like in my case doesn't necessarily mean you are miscarrying. But it would definitely be worth trying to get a scan at EPU to ease your worry.

pieceoftoast · 17/09/2014 17:46

Can you ask your GP to refer you to your local EPU? Sometimes you need to approach them and insist that this is the sort of care you need (many EPUs won't allow you to self-refer; funding issues - which is also why GPs aren't always upfront that they exist Hmm).

I have had 2 pregnancies where the bleeding meant miscarriage, but my current pregnancy (now 19 weeks) I bled daily for several weeks in 1st trimester and it didn't mean miscarriage, so really you won't know unless you wait it out/get an early scan.

Hoping for the best outcome for you Thanks

Bellyrub1980 · 17/09/2014 18:05

I'm another one who had bleeding at 6 weeks. I had pain also, so an early scan at the EPU was done and all okay.

I have bleeding again at 20 weeks. Again, everything ok.

I'm now 35 weeks.

(My mum maintains she had a light monthly bleed all the way through her pregnancies)

Tipsykisses · 17/09/2014 20:59

Hi frecklebee, I had bleeding throughout my last pregnancy and cramping at 6 & 10 weeks , I was petrified just as as you are .

They never found any reason for the bleeds it was just one of those things apparently but I did go to the EPU for scans which helped put my mind at ease so I would see if you can find the number for the one in your area .

My Ds was born way overdue and weighed In at 9lb 6lb !
A very healthy boy after all the worry .

Hope you keep in touch and let us know how you get on x

Loveallmyboys · 17/09/2014 21:24

I started bleeding at around 5/6 weeks. Bled more often than not up until 20 weeks-including several very heavy bleeds with huge clots. Had lots of scans that did eventually show up areas of bleeding around the sac(subchorionic hematoma-I had to mention this to the sonographer after a google search I did-and they eventually spotted this bleed) I'm 27 weeks now and been bleed-free, touch wood) for 7 ish weeks now. So dont always think the worst. Keep us posted Thanks

morethanpotatoprints · 17/09/2014 21:31

Hello OP

My sister had a monthly bleed like a period all the way through one of her pregnancies, she was fine and her son is 29.
I hope all goes well for you Thanks

Roseylee20 · 18/09/2014 09:09

Hi frecklebee- have you managed to sort any appointments out, referral etc? I agree with the others- an early scan will put your mind at rest and will show you everything you need to know. I wish you all the best Thanks

birdofthenorth · 18/09/2014 11:30

Sorry OP. Do rest. I've had two miscarriages and as another poster says, much more blood than a normal period, with clots. Unfortunately no, there is nothing you can do (or could have done differently). I would ask EPU for a scan, although at just 6 weeks they may not be able to detect a heartbeat even if all is well. Good luck... lots of women have early bleeding and go on to have successful pregnancies. Take care.

lozzy1982 · 18/09/2014 15:29

If you cant get an nhs scan i would get yourself booked in to a private scan straight away. Theres no point sitting worrying. Just makes things worse. Best of luck to u and baby

FreckleBee · 18/09/2014 17:47

Hi, thanks everyone for their support an reassurance. I've followed drs orders and rested all day. No blood this am but then around 4pm blood coming away when I went to the loo.
I phoned my local maternity unit and was able to speak with a midwife. She has booked me in for an early scan next week when I would be 7 weeks as they'll be able to tell more then. That is reassuring in a way that I won't have to wait another five weeks to see if baby has made it. But of course still pretty worried about what's going on.

On a side note, is this likely to be an abdo or vaginal scan? I dint really mind it's just so I'm prepared x

OP posts:
Littlefrenchmummy · 18/09/2014 17:50

It will be vaginal... Fingers crossed all is ok for you x x x

stripycreature · 18/09/2014 19:10

I had a vaginal scan at 5 and a bit weeks. They couldn't see a heartbeat so I had another one a week later - that was abdominal.

LittleBairn · 18/09/2014 19:16

Freckle at 7 weeks quite likely Vaginal. I've had a few of them honestly they don't hurt.
My expereince of bleeding in pregnancy has always turned out to be nothing. My 2nd pregnancy I had a massive bleed soaking towels worth of blood, it was a placenta Hematoma baby was fine and I was told I would likely bleed again. I did two weeks later this time I was also in pain so I had a other scan and baby was still fine.
My current pregnancy I had a bleed on Monday not as much blood but a lot of painful cramping, was scanned on Wednesday and the baby is fine.

kiki0202 · 18/09/2014 21:45

I have had 1 MC and one bleed in a full term pg I thought I was MC second time (even told people I was having a MC) and DS is snoring next door have faith lots of woman have bleeds my MIL has a few with each of her children it does not mean MC.

FreckleBee · 18/09/2014 23:29

It is really reassuring to hear that many people have had bleeds but gone on to have healthy babies. I'm probably over reacting! It's so difficult when you've never done this before isn't it

OP posts:
RunBikeRun · 19/09/2014 05:43

Hi Freckle, I'm currently 20 weeks pregnant and at 6 , 10, 14 and 18 weeks I suffered very heavy bleeds, to the point at 18 weeks we all (including the midwife and consultant) had prepared for me to lose the baby.
All was Ok though and it had later been discovered that I was suffering from heamatomas (sp?) it's extremely worrying but I also had no pain at all, just very very heavy bleeding. I also had a bleed with my eldest at 8 weeks and she's a healthy 11 year old.
Yes, some bleeding doesn't end well but it really isn't abnormal so much to have a small bleed. I hope your scan goes well and try to relax as much as you can.

Roseylee20 · 19/09/2014 08:09

I'm the same as RunBikeRun, I am currently 9+3 and had spotting/light bleeding. Ranging from red to pink to brown. Booked in for an early scan where I found I was 7+2, saw baby and heartbeat, and was told I had a haematoma. Has never heard if one before and it was described to me as a blood blister that would other bleed out or absorb itself. So far all is ok Smile And yes like the others have said, it will be an internal scan but don't worry, if the nurses are anything like the ones I have had, they make you feel relaxed and I even requested that she wait a moment so that I could 'un-tense'! Just so I was more at ease. Good luck! X

FreckleBee · 19/09/2014 09:27

That's good news Roseylee. Is it sore? Did you take your partner? x

OP posts:
kiki0202 · 19/09/2014 09:32

It's not sore and do take your partner with you for support if it's not good news and to see baby if all is well.
