headed for a showdown on baby name

We are currently expecting our second son. We've agreed on the first name, no problem. For the middle name, we initially bounced around different ones. Dh mentioned that it would be nice to use the last name of a good friend/artistic mentor of his. I was seriously considering it, but then decided I would rather use my maiden name. Rarely, my maiden name can be used as a first name. Unforunately, dh knew someone by this name who was a "jerk". This is why we didn't use it for a first name with ds as I had proposed at one time. However, ds has a family name as a middle name and I think it would be nice for this baby to have a family middle name as well. Plus it sounds a lot better than the other one. I can see this issue heating up rapidly.

oh noooo!

can you use both? Will they go well together?

MrsBadger · 25/09/2006 12:24

Can you dig out another family name to use that'll keep the 'family' connection but won't have the bad connotations for dh?
Your mum's maiden name? His mum's maiden name?

jabberwocky · 25/09/2006 12:24

Well, here's what they are:

Dh's pick - Kiernan Baeder

My pick - Kiernan Finley

And, there's the other thing that someone said "Oh, MasterBaeder" when I told them the first one. Now, that wouldn't be the main reason to change my mind, but I hate to set the little tyke up for name jokes.

Well, my mother's maiden name has been used to death by another family member (who I'm not close to at all, so not good connotations for me) and dh's mom's name was Busch. Don't want George Bush references, plus our last name is Rose!

Of the two, I prefer yours! I'm going to name my next son Alexander, I've known a few Alexs, some have been nice, some have been 'jerks'! My first so shares a name with my ex-boyfriend's dog! Yu pick a name because you like it, then your child makes it their own.

NotActuallyAMum · 25/09/2006 12:27

If you really can't come to an agreement have you considered just not bothering with a middle name? Most people I know hate their middle name and wishes they didn't have one

NotActuallyAMum · 25/09/2006 12:28

Sorry, also meant to say yours sounds much better than his

CarolinaMoon · 25/09/2006 12:28

Kiernan Finley Baeder Rose is nice isn't it?

That way your ds doesn't need to disclose the Baeder bit if he thinks he'll get teased for it

jabberwocky · 25/09/2006 12:29

I know they didn't use middle names much in dh's family, but I really want him to have 3 names.

LOL, CM, I actually thought of that, but I really, really wanted a 4th name for ds and dh wouldn't hear of it!

jabberwocky · 25/09/2006 12:36

Okay, I was reluctant to say this, but I feel so strongly about it, I am tempted to just put down my pick on the birth certificate and tell him to deal with it. I hate to be so b*tchy about it, though.

liquidclocks · 25/09/2006 12:37

Sounds like he got his way last time - your turn!

liquidclocks · 25/09/2006 12:38

btw - my mum changed the order of my brother's name on his birth certificate so it's not unheard of...

jabberwocky · 25/09/2006 12:38

That's what I was thinking I guess I'm trying to drum up moral support to take a firm stand. Dh can be a bit of a control freak.

OP posts:
CarolinaMoon · 25/09/2006 12:39

oh christ, don't do that - you'll never hear the end of it

Tell him it's four names or your choice - up to him.

jabberwocky · 25/09/2006 12:39

LOL at your mum. That gives me confidence!

jabberwocky · 25/09/2006 12:43

I know your DH said he knew someone who was a jerk with that name, but he also knows someone who isn't a jerk with that name - you!!!!! I think your name sounds better anyway but really men are sometimes so fickle!!!

jabberwocky · 25/09/2006 13:56

That's what I told him. He did after all marry someone with that name, so it couldn't be that repulsive.
